Babushka Nouveau Russe
Very enjoyable experience. Will return soon. Food a happy surprise. Will recommend to friends.
Wanted to go here for a long tine. Enjoyed our Valentine’s Day menu :) will come again
On Valentines Day they should have more than 1 set menu as there were things that we really did not want to eat on the menu. Some of us do not eat any kind of seafood. Service was not very good as they appeared to be shorthanded. There was no bartender or hostess to support the servers. We were not offered coffee or asked how we enjoyed the meal. Very high price for what we got. The lamb shank however was very good.
Valentine's Day had a prefixed menu and food was amazing. The service was delightful yet very slow and seemed to have forgotten quite a few things. They might have been understaffed. A table for two (without cocktails, water only), took two hours. They forgot about our palate cleanser from the prefixed menu. I hope the service is a bit faster next time around! I'd like to come back on another day to try the regular menu.
Amazing prefixe menu for Valentine’s Day. 7 courses for $65.
Had a lovely birthday dinner with my family. The service is always wonderful, and the food is absolutely superb!
Staff were very pleasant, menu was interesting and food tasted delicious, ambiance was comfortably elegant. Pace of service was on the slow side, but it felt intentional and in keeping with the Russian/Europe culture
Fantastic food & service, great place for business meeting!
Everything was wonderful. We can't wait to go back. Thank you!
Very well prepared , hearty food
Wish that we had ordered 2 chocolate cakes instead of 1.
We will visit again during the spring.
Babushka has been a hidden gem in Walnut Creek for quite some time, this is the first time we’ve been back since they remodeled the main dining room. Really a nice experience, with knowledgeable, attentive service and delicious food. Very pleased, we will return.
We have eaten here a few times, it is always wonderful. This time it was friend from San Francisco. They loved it!
Very good service. Our meal was tasty, although basic. The atmosphere could use some improvement.
Babushka is the best restaurant in Walnut Creek!
We Love coming here. The food is always outstanding, the service is fabulous and we love their choices of European beers.
I heard about Babushka from Open Table and I am glad I gave it a try. The food was excellent. We had the beff stroganoff it did not have the noodles like other dishes. The beef, mash potatoes and mushrooms were out of sight. We finished with the chocolate cake for dessert. Wow. Give this a shot if you are in Walnut Creek.
All of us really loved the food. Beet salad and borsht and dumplings were delicious. Honey cake was also very flavorful and moist. There are not very many Russian restaurants nearby and we made a special trip to Walnut Creek for a special occasion.
While the food was wonderful, we all agreed the ambience did not match the food. Low ceiling, somewhat gaudy light fixtures, and even the paintings on the wall did not add anything to the great experience we could be having. We will definitely return for another Russian meal and hope the decor would be cozier and more elegant. I would also add that I have had much better rye/dark bread in other restaurants before.
Stunning good food: fresh, unique flavors, and presented beautifully. I will be bringing my mom for her birthday next month. Would be great for a date night too. The owners keep a deli with all sorts of delicacies next door.
Another lovely meal! This is our favorite restaurant! We had the piroskis beef and spinach with feta which were delicious! Followed by a delectable roasted beet salad. We had beef stroganoff and rack of lamb which were absolutely fantastic. A wonderful bottle of wine and finished with desserts of napoleon and a molten chocolate cake with vanilla ice cream. I hate to share this restaurant for obvious selfish reasons but, it deserves to be well known because it is that good! Wonderful food and service. A true gem!
Great food and service, highly recommend the stroganoff and the starters.
Food is nothing special, which was biggest disappointment based on reviews. Atmosphere is meh - seems like a retread of multiple restaurants with no personality (gold trimmed mirror from the '80s?). Wine selection is insipid - Eastern European crud that seems chosen for the area rather than quality (place desperately needs a wine buyer).
Overall, we were disappointed and won't be back.
One thing was very odd is the obvious entrance is locked and people sitting inside would point where to enter via narrow, unmarked hallway 15' to the left to get to a second entrance - apparently there's a small sign on the window that you don't notice until you try and turn the locked handle (it's obvious details like this that makes one shake one's head). The couple sitting in the window met us as we were walking out and told us and the greeter (owner?) that they had told 10 people the same thing while they were eating - the greeter just nodded - 100 to 1 nothing is done to address this glaringly simple problem...
There are too many decent restaurants to give business to amateurs like those running this place.
So nice to be able to park right in front of a restaurant in downtown Walnut Creek! Attractive dining room. Only 2 servers but service was ok. Food and wine were delicious, especially the Pinot Noir and the housemade noodles with the Beef Stroganoff.
Food was incredible and creative. We loved the Pinot Noir from Hungary. Varvara made excellent recommendtions for entrees, wine and dessert. Goulash was great and the mushroom dumplings were also excellent.
I took my mom here for her 90th birthday. They had an elegant table for 7 ready for us and it was beyond expectations from there. The service was excellent and friendly, and the food was fantastic. It is a Russian restaurant so we all had a shot of excellent vodka straight from the deep freeze to whet our appetites. Great little secret in Walnut Creek!
Great food, authentic cuisine and attentive service. Will return to dine in a heartbeat!
This restaurant is so under appreciated / not well known. Food is amazing, price is right, service is outstanding. A must go place.
Delicious food! Very friendly staff as well.
Made my husbands birthday extra special with some cookie and a vodka shot with the chef.
Only note would be it was a kind of bright in there so the mood was a bit lost but once the food arrived we forgot all about it. We had a wonderful time!
Great service and food. We tried a couple of appertizers, three entries, dessert and a flight of vocka. Fun experience and love that we were not rushed at any point during dinner.
We had a company holiday dinner (10 people) and all of us were very happy with the quality of the food, quiet place, very nice staff and reasonable prices.
I went to Babushka for a second time and this time was even better than the last!
We started with red caviar with crepes and creme fraiche, an eggplant dip and piroshki with salad. The starters were delicious! Then my spouse had the Wild Boar which was very good and I had the Golubtsy which was perfect because we had so many staters!
I can't wait to bring my daughter here as she will love the beef stroganoff or the chicken Kiev!
This place is a hidden gem! One of my favorite places to go for comfort food and conversation. Great food and beautiful presentation.
Excellent food and service in a very quiet setting
I went with 2 friends. We were already swooning when we shared the crepe with red caviar and chicken piroshki. We then had mushroom and potato vareneki and pork pelmeni. We were completely quiet while we ate these wonderful dumplings because the food and sauces were so good. We finished the meal with “walnut” cookies which are extremely delicate cookies in the shape if a nut, filled with chocolate and nuts. We also had sodas that were flavored with pine, pear and tarragon. The waitstaff was very attentive and offered great explanations of all the choices. Can’t wait to return!
As amazing as the first time! This place is so DELICIOUS I felt the need to dine here two consecutive times. The service, playlist, and dishes are the BEST!
Simply AMAZING!! A true gem in Walnut Creek and one of the best restaurants in the city. Phenomenal service, music, food, cocktails and wine selections.
This is an excellent restaurant. I've dined here twice and my first visit I was just a bit disappointed that there was so much French influence in the Russian dishes, notably the Stroganoff, but I'm over that. The chef here is a star and the fusion works so well it is hard to describe. I recommend starting with the Black Caviar, very reasonably priced for very high quality, and a vodka flight. Super! Piroshkis were amazing, and both the Stroganoff and the Chicken Kiev are so creative and delicious. Service was superb. This is a top favorite for me in East Bay. Wonderful!
Great Eastern European food. Vodka tasting, caviar, loved it!
We went here for a birthday dinner and really enjoyed it! The food was authentic and very tasty and well prepared. It is really comfort food. The restaurant has been remodeled for a much more contemporary look. This was a deli and a rather dark restaurant several years ago. Our server was very knowledgeable and provided a good explanation of the food. I had the beef stroganoff which was great. The piroshki's were good too. Give it a try!
The food was amazing! We had the lamb and it was cooked to perfection. The beet salad was hands down the most amazing and delicious thing I have ever tasted with beets. Probably one of my top 5 favorite dishes of all time.
The beer was delicious and the wine selection was interesting but my friend decided to try the flight of vodka instead of wine. They were chilled, presented nicely but we couldn't tell the difference. Maybe you can, it's fun!
The service is very, very slow. The women are all very sweet and lovely but it took about ten minutes to get our drink order in and the place was not busy. Maybe four other tables.
