Babbo Ristorante Ratings and Reviews
I have been an absolute fan of Mario Batali for years; have his cookbooks and watched all of his cooking programs. I was in NYC for business and it was my last day in the City and made a lunch reservation for me and an associate for 11:30 am. My associate wanted to do a little shopping given it was our last day and I stated that was fine but when it was time to go to Babbo's I was leaving with or without her. Thankfully she had the good sense to accompany me to the restaurant at the appointed time. The staff was WONDERFUL....everyone we came in contact with was gracious and helpful. I know there have been some issues with Batali recently but the staff reflected no negativity and my experience could not have been better. My only disappointment was that we didn't stay longer and spend, eat and drink more!!!
The staff was welcoming and knowledgeable from our first peek through the curtains to our last bite of dessert. Elegant but casual. Liked the seating the arrangement Now the food. Excellent. Our waiter helped us with our choice of wines. Very good. Loved the Cavatelli with lobster, octopus and Calbrian Chiles. The Pistachio and Chocolate Semifreddo was to die for.
45 minutes for appetizer. Babbo Salumi appetizer was an embarrassing worn out assortment of small curled up primitively arrayed pieces spread over a large plate. It was the worst depiction of the dish I have ever witnessed. My guests were astounded.
Next 45 minutes later the pasta dishes were served “cold” and the waiter apologized profusely.
Candidly this restaurant has had its day.
Continues to be among the best Italian restaurants in the world. I’m half Italian and have been to Italy many times . Very hard working dedicated staff and superb cooking prevail.Yet there is no sense of pretentiousness. Don’t hesitate to ask the sommelier for advice. He’ll choose for you precisely what you describe you seek in a wine. The waitstaff knows exactly what ingredients are in every dish. This restaurant is a paradigm for others to follow in the business!
We loved our fine dining at Babbo. They serving staff add all the finishing touches to the meal. Starting with chick peas crostini and the Italian bread, then we were on to our appetizer of Babbo Salami with Baby Fennel. This was 5 different kinds of meats, just enough for a taste which is what we wanted as we needed room for the next course. We chose their own Babbo wines served in an 8 ounce carafe.
We chose two of the home made pastas. They served us one at a time and did portion shares at their suggestion. The maitake mushrooms comes through the Tonnarelli Verde but we just loved the Homemade Orecchiette with Sweet Sausage and Rapini. The tomato sauce was fresh with little pieces of the sweet sausage and plenty of rapine.
The best desert was the Pistachio and Chocolate Semifreddo. The pistachio semifreddo, ice cream and whipped cream blended paired with chocolate glace and an 1/8 inch chocolate flour less cake as the crust. Even though we were full we finished the desert with glee.
This is a special occasion place and we were not dissappointed.
Second visit for lunch at this lovely Italian restaurant. We did the tasting menu with the reserve wine pairing. It was wonderful and the wine steward incredibly knowledgeable about the wine and spent time chatting with us about her experience. Just disappointed when I asked for a substitution for a course because I do not eat dark meat that they would not accommodate me as the last time here they did. Also did not point out (by speaking it) that a 3 oz pour of one wine was $32.00. Showed the menu to us and asked what we wanted and it wasn't clear on it what the price was. But soooo good we didn't care as we'd never buy a whole bottle at $225.
Will go again but probably call and request ahead of time if the tasting menu can be modified for a semi-vegetarian.
whenever we have a very special occasion, this is our favorite restaurant, sometimes hard to get a reservation, but always worth it. If you can splurge choose the testing menu with the wine pairings. Expensive, but definetely a worthwhile experiencfe.. If not try the best Ossobuco of NYC only for Winter.
Must go!!! Not sure how there could be a bad review unless.....
Actually thought it was very reasonably priced. Loud music, ok...so now you know. Wasnt like eating at a concert. Ok onto the amazing food no matter what you picked! So I recommend eating there and ordering the ANYTHING!!!. ALL stafg were friendly personable, attentive and helpful.
Outstanding as always! If you are going to have a cheat day, this is the place to do it!
Must go!!! Not sure how there could be a bad review unless....its NYC and Batali so expext to pay a couple bucks more. One problem, I live in FL and its in NYC.
This was our third visit and consistent stop on each of our visits to New York. The wait staff was very attentive and our waiter, Michael, was very helpful and knowledgeable, however, we were HIGHLY DISSAPPOINTED WITH THE SOMMELIER. He seemed to be unfocused and disengaged. He may be knowledgeable but he clearly has a bias towards particular clients. Our hope was to have a conversation about wine and purchase something yummy from the extensive wine list. That was not the case and when he finally arrived he was apathetic and arrogant. He seems to be a liability for an amazing restaurant. Our next visit, we hope to have an improved experience.
Five of us lunched and but for one comment from waiter rushing us to order, the experience was devine. The room is small keeping atmosphere intimate, welcoming and unpretentious . Food -pork belly ravioli, calamari, arugula salad were very creatively prepared, novel and delicious. Wine recommendation was excellent. Service was attentive with multiple people swooping in to clear. As we hadn’t seen each other for a while, we lingered and felt no pressure to leave which made earlier ordering comment an anomaly. Highly recommend.
While my husband thoroughly enjoyed his entree, mine, the pork chop, was over cooked and on the dry side. I shared this with the waiter when asked how I was enjoying my meal. Another dish was promptly offered in place of the pork chop.
Other than that, the meal was delicious!
