Great place , nice menu and nice size portions which is so nice and rare these days
The service was poor. We had to ask 3 times for a glass of water. Received coffee and had to ask twice for sugar and never received butter with our bread. We were looking forward to having the wild boar ragu having just come back from Tuscany and we were sorely disappointed. We would never order it again and it in fact gave me a stomach ache. Overall we did not understand the attraction of the large noisy crown of people to this restaurant. This was our first and last time!!
Food fabulous, waiter knowledgeable, friendly and helpful. My daughter and I loved it!
Babbo is still wonderful after so many years. It's fancier than I am accustomed to but not uncomfortable to show up in tastefully casual attire. The service is friendly and accommodating and the food is always delicious. Highly recommend.
Overdone octopus and sardines. Flavorless pork chop. Wine recommendation that was terrible.
Recommended to us. Not really meeting expectations, on many accounts.
Had a wonderful Vongole a few days before, half the price, more familiar setting, beating B’s seafood pasta by far. Sorry.
Screaming rock music, hard to hold a conversation
We had a great experience. Food was delicious as usual. Pasta here is the best we've had in NYC. The lighting and restaurant are beautiful. We thought it was a bit too loud when we arrived at 9pm - got better around 10:30pm. They could lower the music I think. Our server was great. Wine selection is top.
Food was good, couple suggestions:
- bread would have been better warmed and served with butter or olive oil mixture
- noodles seemed slight undercooked in areas but overall were a little spongy
My annual birthday dinner! I’ve made it a tradition to come here each year. They never disappoint!!
Our favourite restaurant in new york (that was recommanded by a friend)
I've been coming here getting the chef's tasting menu for 20 years and it has usually been great, every course a new experience in terms of flavors and skill in preparation. This time I was disappointed. While some of the courses were very nice, one of the courses was a simple piece of cheese served with two thin, slightly dry slices of a baguette. I do the same thing at home, only the bread is better. And one of the pleasures of coming here used to be a bread basket that contained different types of bread that seemed to complement the meal. This time it was simple, plain Italian bread, nothing special. For $125, the current price and greatly increased since the last time I was here, I expect something special. It feels like they are cashing in on their reputation, and for the first time, I am not eager to return.
When visiting NY, Babbo was a must. I have been going to Babbo since its opening in 1998 and have had so many wonderful memories there throughout the years with family and friends. The food was heavenly- prepared perfectly. However, in the past couple years, I've noticed a change. The food has not been amazing. Sadly, it is no long my favorite Italian restaurant. Our dinners last April and this recent visit in November were just OK. The lamb chops were a bit overcooked. The pastas were incredibly over sauced- in fact swimming in sauce. I would describe the presentation of pasta dishes as looking "messy". This is not expected at a restaurant like Babbo.
Excellent night, and definitely worth the experience! Good service, food, and setting. Recommend to anyone!
We were sat at atable for 2 in the corridor where waiters were constantly charging back and forth. The music was incredibly loud. The pasta course was good but the squab was inedible. The couple on the next table returned one of their courses. Overall we found it noisy and uncomfortable and poor value for money.
Too loud music
The food was great. Service top notch. We sat upstairs where it was lovely, except for the music. The piped in bar type music just did not match the ambiance at all.
This is a must stop every time I’m in NYC. My favorite restaurant in the city.
Best Italian in NY. Pappardelle bolognese and wine list superb
Family dinner, tourism @New York. Service and food are great. We will definitively return next time we visit NYC.
Have been going for years. Up until this last visit it was a reliable place to get a lovely dinner. On this last visit the food was fine but not exceptional (including dishes we've had before that were transcendent in the past) and far from warranting the prices. It's a pity: we loved this place, but it ha really stumbled in recent months. Won't be going back again.
Excellent food and service. Somehow the hard rock background music didn’t enhance the experience. Just saying....
Excellent all around!
Great place! Love it!
I never write reviews but I felt compelled to do so. I went to Babbo’s yesterday for my wedding anniversary and it was spectacular. The food and service were outstanding and it lived up to its acclaim. As a long-time “jaded” New Yorker, it exceeded all my expectations. My wife and I will definitely be back. Thank you for making our anniversary extra special.
How the mighty have fallen. In the post-Mario era, Babbo is a shadow of its former self. A general air of of fatigue and defeat pervades the place. Was shocked to see that a vegetarian would find exactly two pastas to order: gnocchi with mozzarella and garganelli with mushrooms. How is it possible that, in 2019, a leading (or formerly leading) Italian restaurant would offer no pasta with seasonal vegetables?
So sad to see what has happened here. Been going there 20 years, and this is decidedly not the place that it was. Mint Love Letters has no mint, and had sauce that tasted like it was from a jar and sweetened. Duck was Burnt. Lamb chops tough. Some was no real help on wine. All in all, this is not a good place.
Music was terrible. Not in keeping with the menu, decor and patrons.
Dated decor and very dark (honestly everyone having to use their phones to read the menu) but food was good!
Overpriced and not worth the money
Had to wait a long time for a table even though a reservation was made. During that time the staff we excellent ... provided drinks ( gratis) and when eventually seated also provided an appetizer (gratis). This certainly took the edge off the wait.
Food was excellent.
The food is excellent. Some dishes way better than others - not all items are the menu are created equal. Great drinks. The 1st floor can get kind of crowded and loud so I would recommend requesting an upstairs table when you make your reservation. Service is also excellent.
Bad. Gone downhill since the last tine we ate there 15 years ago
Super disappointed! We had to send the appetizers back because they were so so salty that you couldn’t eat themat all. And then we ordered the white truffle special which had no flavor besides the truffles. We also had the Sea Bass which was super basic. And the warm banana cake dessert was cold. Also we ordered really nice wine and had to mostly poor it ourself because no server was around.
A real disappointment. On the end they couldn’t find my jacket but they eventually did. Will never go back.
Not great. It is sad as it use to be the place to go. Service was horrible and food was nothing special. So many choice is Manhattan for great Italian food and Babbo used to great but not anymore.
Amazing! Had a reservation for our anniversary, the food was hands down some of the best Italian I’ve ever had. Must go!
I first visited Babbo years ago when it was not uncommon to catch a glimpse of Chef Mario and his orange Crocs circulating around the dining room. At the time the cuisine and extensive wine list were a revelation. Over the years we have been fortunate to return a number of times, most recently on a gorgeous early fall day for a Saturday lunch. Babbo is still that good. We decided on the pasta tasting menu which allowed us to sample several savory dishes. Each offering was absolutely delicious building from a relatively light black pasta through to a final dish of small pyramid shaped pasta with a rich pork belly purée filling. We also enjoyed a wonderful Miani Friulano which paired beautifully with the various pasta courses (kudos to the delightful sommelier for help with the selection). Service was very attentive while respectful of our space. The final bill was not for the dining faint of heart but the overall experience was all we could have hoped for. Babbo is still a gem!
Music was great! Our waitress was super nice and helpful!
From a service standpoint, our time there started off a little rocky. The server took forever to give us any meaningful attention and was very distracted until after our second course, then he got much better. The support staff were fantastic. The food was absolutely exquisite. Every item we had, in every course was exceptionally prepared. We were also expecting a much higher bill when we were finished-pleasant surprise after a phenomenal meal. The atmosphere of the restaurant it warm and romantic.
From our greeting by the hostess/maitre d’ to our server James to the wonderful muted music and delicious food and attentive multiple servers, it was a lovely evening. James was professional, friendly, helpful, entertaining and very attentive. The music was a perfect volume: not too loud but loud enough for us to enjoy it. We loved it all!
