B44 Ratings and Reviews
Our waiter always seemed to be in a rush. He didn't really ask how it was going or ask if it was a special occasion - which it was my birthday. I lived in Barcelona and have had authentic Catalan food. For being in the US it was pretty good, especially the Octopus and patatas bravas. The canelones were not very good, paella was alright, a bit salty for me.
Way overpriced, as is typical for tapas which often means less food more price. Even my girl left hungry and we dropped $150 on a simple meal for two. Too bad because the food is very tasty, the atmosphere is cool, and the wait staff are excellent. Just too hard to justify that kind of money when I'm not getting a big fat slab of prime beef, in contrast.
I've been dining at B44 for several occasions. The food is good and the atmosphere is very good so that I take my friends visiting San Francisco. At this particular visit, the service was bad – if you say it existed. We did not get anything other than water and menu more than 30 hour, nobody came to take orders. The restaurant was not that busy. Once food started arrive, because they were really good, everyone became happy. I was very much embarrassed for recommending this place to friends except for the quality of food.
The ambiance was great and the menu was extensive - but I was disappointed by the quality/value. For example we ordered the Catalan salad which was listed as having chorizo, and only got one slice of chorizo in it....Just kind of sloppy. But the food was decent and it was a fun place for a weeknight meal!
Most of the food was excellent (garlic shrimp and crab stuffed peppers were favorites. The vegetarian paella is way better than meatless paellas we've had in the past at other places). The octopus was a miss. The location is cute. What really brought the experience down was the service. The server would just disappear for 20 or 30 minutes- nowhere to be found. The busboy had to get our drink orders, requests for bread, the bill- poor guy was overworked since he seemed to be the front of house staff doing anything. I know these reviews can sound like people are exaggerating or being overly picky, but it was startlingly bad service for the price point- hopefully it was just a bad night for them (though they were nowhere near capacity) or else I don't see them lasting long in competitive SF. We still had a great night despite our server's apparent alien abduction mid-shift. ;) More sangria please!
We would have been more pleased if the waitress hadn't spilled a glass of cava on my husband... she did refill the glass but there was not any other attempt at "compensation" (ideas: bring us another bottle... free dessert...). As we were with friends, we did not make a scene. The food was tasty but low on meat items. The paella, altho yummy, had very little meat (chicken and pancetta) which was disappointing. The churros are yummy but you only get a tiny, tiny bowl of chocolate with them -- Barcelona style usually fills a coffee cup. Good flavors, small portions.
B44 is an amazing restaurant with even more amazing food. They did a great job accommodating my group of 14 for my birthday. They were very patient, as well as helpful with food items. Definitely recommend going for the experience and the food.
I have been eating here for a few years and this was the least memorable. The food was just OK. In the past it was worth coming back to but I can't say it is at this point. The black squid ink paella was good but it only had a few clams and nothing else. The other issue was that all the dishes came at once, which didn't allow us to enjoy the meal. I might head next door for some french clams on my next meal to this alley in SF, which I do love.
Our family had lunch at B44 one day during our stay in San Francisco and enjoyed the tapas and some of the sandwiches. I must say that being born in Spain I found that although the names of the tapas are the same as in Spain the quality of the food was not as good. The service was great.
Enjoyable dinner with European ambiance. Service was very good from our waiter, but he was over-committed and so wasn't as available as he might have been. Tapas and paella were about what we expected. We asked for the waiter's recommendation on a red wine with the paella and were not disappointed.
I would return. Our Groupon helped in the price department and they didn't add on an 18% service charge, as the Groupon said they would. I tipped appropriately anyway.
