The food was mediocre at best. The Bloody Mary was awful. If you like to chew on pepper, you may enjoy it. The service was very slow. I won’t be back.
Brunch food was very good, and reasonably priced. However, they were out of pancakes?!?! Not sure how you can be out of pancakes? This was very disappointing to the kids. Service was good and friendly; enjoyable ambiance with great jazz music in the background but not so loud to be overpowering.
I can get a veggie burger without any soy in it--I am allergic to soy--and this veggie burger is quite good.
The waiters are very friendly. Since I ate at the bar to eat, I had some very interesting conversations with people.
Overall the food was good!! Just a very sad Caesar salad, but the spinach dip and fried chicken sandwich made up for it!
We had a nice dinner at B-Side prior to a performance at SF Jazz. Our table was ready when we arrived, the food, service and timing were very good. I had the pork chop and it was excellent. I forget what my wife had (sorry dear). The martinis and wine were good. So were coffee and desert.
After dinner, we walked into the performance and saw some great jazz. Then took an Uber home. the evening couldn't have been nicer.
We will go again.
I should have known when I asked if they had "Diet Coke" and the server said "It's Cola". The hamburger was not good....meat tasted funky, tough and grissly. I should have sent it back but didn't. It's so convenient when going to SF Jazz shows but not good enough for me to return.
Everything was great, except .... the restaurant manager. I made dinner reservations for two 3 months ago. This restaurant has 3 different types of seating; standard table, high-top, and bar. I always make reservations for the high-top. When I made the reservation I only got 2 choices vs. 3 choices the previous times. I didn't want the standard table so made reservations for "bar" but added a message in an area for requests that I would like a high-top table and not sit at the bar. I thought it would be clear. However, I get a call 10 mins before our arrival that we can't be seated at our requested table. All tables are booked, high and low, only seating at the bar is available. "It's a problem with the system. We don't check reservations and messages until the day of." The hostess doesn't know how to accommodate us other than seat us at the bar or in the lounge area where you sit on a couch and eat from a coffee table. Not very comfy. The manager comes over and tells us it's either bar or lounge. There's no budging. Take it or leave it. High-top tables are intended for 3 or 4 people. I notice 2 available small high tables near the bar which would allow more privacy than sitting at the bar but they don't have bar stools. I ask whether we can pull two bar stools from the bar and sit there. "No". Alright, we take the bar seating because time is ticking and we need to catch the show. We order dinner, meanwhile, we see a couple being seated at a high top. What? Now it's possible? Then bar stools are pulled away from some place and the 2 small high tables are being set for other couples. What? Ballsy, this is happening right under our eyes. Anyway, Ricardo the bartender is great. He had noticed we were not treated right and gives us a drink on the house. He made good and we had a good time chatting with him but he did what the manager should have done. Offer us at least a drink! We will be back as soon as the manager is fired or Ricardo is running the show.
Good food but really, really bad service. Can’t say I’d recommend
My husband and I had dinner here before a Philip Glass concert. We weren’t sure what to expect, but we were pleased to find out that B-Side is exceptionally good! The food was flavorful and well prepared, and the staff was kind and efficient. We enjoyed great drinks with an excellent vegetable platter and a fantastic hamburger. A very happy experience. Thank you, B-Side.
Again, another mixed experience. Pretty good shared plate then a bland main course. Main course arrived seconds after the starter--happening more and more in restraurants and really offensive as no time to enjoy the food and feeling very rushed. The main courses, besides bland, were also overcooked and portions so large, this diner felt quilty about wasting so much food that could not possibly be eaten at one sitting. Good drinks and so-so wine. Pretty good friendly service but not very attentive. Overall felt like a place not to go back to again.
Food was terrible, overly-brined pork chop with a strong vinegar taste. Steak ordered medium rare came extremely rare. When waiter came to clear and pork chop was virtually untouched, the server didn't ask whether there was something wrong
Good place for dinner before a show at the SF Jazz - in the same building. However: Overpriced mixed drinks. Martini cost: $17 - way too high a price. There were 2 add-ons to the basic $13 Martini that did not make sense. Discussed this with waiter and his manager took off one of these, but still seemed expensive. Otherwise pretty good food and very convenient.
I had the veggie burger which was very good and it did not have soy. I am allergic to soy.
The waiter was very accommodating. It's a great place to eat before going to the SFJazz performances.
Reserve ahead of time. It fills up fast.
Great food, stoned server.
The veggie burger was excellent. They were out of salmon, which we thought was unusual for 6:30 on a Saturday night. The hot fudge sundae was just a scoop of ice cream with chocolate syrup poured over it. Don't call it a "hot fudge" sundae if you don't really use hot fudge and don't call it a "sundae" if you don't include whipped cream, nuts and a cherry.
Not sure why B-Side allowed me to make a 2pm brunch reservation when the kitchen was closing at 2:30pm. (I knew from the website that brunch was only served until 2:30pm, but they also serve lunch and dinner so I just thought we'd have to rush our mimosa orders or something.) We had barely sat down when our waiter said, "Just so you know, the kitchen closes in 10 minutes." Okay... Also not a good choice for those with dietary restrictions -- to their credit, they did accommodate me. But they seemed very unaccustomed to being asked to make what I consider a simple adjustment based on my previous dining experience (no dairy in a vegetarian egg dish). And overall, I don't understand why their reservation policy is so strict (they charge a fee if you cancel OR MODIFY your reservation less than a couple days in advance). I would expect such a policy from a very high quality, fancy restaurant. This place is basically a nice bar with food. Tasty drinks, so head over there for happy hour or a beverage.
Truly outstanding food. And bartender Manuel is the best in the city. Just the best. Great place for drinks and food before any show in Civic Center area. Seating on couches, or at tables, or our fave - at the bar.
We were the only customers here for brunch, so we got top notch service. Food was very good and well-priced, but not that special/creative. It’s definitely a place more focused around brunch cocktails (which we weren’t having), and the coffee was quite disappointing. Probably wouldn’t come back to treat myself to brunch, but would come back to try their drinks!
Once again, the fried chicken sandwich does not disappoint, not by a long shot. It is SO good. So is the chicken/cabbage salad SOOOOO good. And the house-made spicy tequila cocktail. And, every darn thing we orderd!! Excellent service. Got seated promptly. Server and table staff were ON it. Friendly, attentive, even when it got to bustling. It was a great experience. The food is as noted really good and a great price point. Let me repeat that: the food is a great price point! Priciest item on menu is steak frites for $27 and the steak is substantial. Fried chicken sandwich on brioche w/delish house fries or salad is $15; unbeleiveably excellent salad w/chicken is $13. Those are night prices. Right in the middle of SF Jazz Center and right behind Davies Symph Hall... good stuff. Simple dessert menu: because my dining partner needed gluten-free we had to pass on the key lime pie and bread pudding and go in on that hot fudge sunday; no regrets. It was good for two people and quite tasty. I do think the specialty cocktails which are really good, at $14/ each are a bit pricey but generously large and quite "robust" (strong and boozey! But I can only speak for the tequila cocktail since that is my fav and I am a creature of habit. )
This is the go-to for folks attending SF Jazz events. It is perfect. I would for sure drop in there if in the area for other things: fun spot, good food with great, super fresh ingredients at a good price. ...Yeah!! Highly recommend!
Brussel sprouts too salty, pie too sweet. Nothing special here, just useful location.
Really loved this place. Great vibe, really good farm-to-table food and prices that were reasonable especially considering the location. Manuel was the best bartender I've had in a long time, and he is enthusiastic about his job, letting you try samples of infused liquors. Trust him and you'll come away with an amazing drink!
A really good addition to SF Jazz -casual-comfortable -no frills decor / ambience are totally in keeping with SF Jazz. The food's high quality and a good value. Servers capable and friendly. And the bartenders are outstanding - knowledgeable friendly efficient!
The food was over-cooked and pedestrian. I can’t imagine what would make me come back.
Great fresh food, friendly wait staff, great cocktails, nice jazzy loungy feel and music
We were able to snag a reservation while the jazz show was happening inside the SF Jazz area. B-Side was quite empty at first, but the ambience changed immensely (for the better) when the show let out.
Excellent and attentive service by each person in the restaurant.
Thoughtful menu and very nice sized portions (Brussels sprouts are AMAZING and the Rib Eye is insane!).
Dessert was also fantastic.
My husband ordered a hot fudge sundae; it arrived with less than a drizzle of chocolate syrup.
We've eaten here multiple times (and tried to when they were full many more) as members of SFJazz. This is by far the BEST meal we've had there. Sean is back at the bar, so the service was great, and we will definitely come back for brunch many more times.
I have never left a review of a restaurant before. I am leaving this review because the food here was so bad. My salmon was significantly over cooked and also not warm. The vegetables were three different temperatures and bland.
Might be a good spot for a drink before a jazz show but do not come here for dinner.
The food was very good, and the options on the menu were a good variety. The service was excellent. All the servers were attentive and pleasant and made the experience great. I don’t generally like going to the City but this experience was nice and great especially if you are attending an event at the SF Jazz Center.
If you're going to a concert at the SF Jazz Center, this is the place to go for dinner before the performance, or maybe drinks afterwards. It's right IN the Jazz Center, and there is limited seating and so you really must make a reservation to be sure you can get in. Servings are pricey but large, so the best approach is to split everything you're going to eat with your dining companion. The hamburger has to be seen to be believed....They served it as-ordered (medium-rare) and we were pleased with that.
Slow service, wrong dishes delivered
Service and food were exceptional.
I was meeting colleagues who were driving up from Santa Clara for dinner.
Of course there was traffic and they arrived 30 minutes late. There was not a show that night so the wait staff were able to accommodate and sit me at the table at 6pm and relax and put in order to arrive right when my colleagues were expected to arrive.
The drinks and food were tasty. I especially liked the sautéed chive, squid, mushroom appetizer and tator tots. But everything we ate was really good -- my colleagues had burgers.
We went before the ballet. It was good. The Brussel sprouts were tasty and we shared the steak. The fries seemed a little old. The price was reasonable and the service was good. There so many restaurants in the area that it’s hard to compete.
Food was very good, drinks were good but not stand out. Service was good despite issues with the bill. In the end come for the music.
We were seated at the bar for dinner, per our request. We were waited on immediately and two guys essentially helped us. Turns it it was brothers Manny & Ricardo. Cocktail (Spring Rain) was fabulous.
Dinner was really, really tasty. We started sharing the grilled artichoke, followed by the tater tots (yum), then the salmon with cauliflower for him and spinach salad with roasted chicken for me. I just realized that my "to-go" coffee was complimentary. Thanks!
We were checked on often (everything was fine each time) and we felt that the drinks, appetizers and entrees was served in a manner to savor and enjoy our dinner. The place did fill up around 6 - 6:30 or so as I'm assuming there was a jazz show about to start, and drinks were ordered at the bar to be taken into the music venue by customers three deep. I never felt a hiccup in our service despite them being very busy. These guys are to be commended!
Went to the SF Symphony afterwards, with a casual walk and plenty of time to get there.
HIGHLY recommend. Nice evening.
great food and good service.
and super convenient for SFJazz performance.
I understand they are under a tremendous crush before a show, but dealing with that is why they exist. Poorly cooked, slapdash food, cocktails that take a half-hour and several requests to arrive. I know they can do better.
Love this place! Ate here pre-show & had a great dinner w friends. It's very open & attractive setting, great for people-watching. Ate in comfy bar area on a leather couch. Small plates which were all very well-prepared & tasty. Flawless cocktails. Great waitress who boxed up leftovers & stored for me to pick up post-concert. Now THAT is a class act in & of itself, Rebecca Fantastic service on all levels. Will be back soon w more friends to introduce.
This was our second meal at B-Side. We'd tried the two spots that preceded it and didn't like either. B-Side has finally figured it out. The food was vastly better than in prior incarnations and the service was great as well. It's finally a worthwhile choice before shows at SFJAZZ (or nearby). The prices seem a bit high, though. The two of us had 2 small plates, an entree, 3 drinks, no dessert, and it came to almost $100.
