B&G Oysters Ratings and Reviews
B&G is an old favorite, and my place of choice for oysters. However, that's going to have to change. Every time I go now, they seem to have raised the prices, significantly this last visit. Up to $3.75 per oyster. Unfortunately, along with the higher prices has come a decline in shucking ability. Four of the six oysters I had were improperly shucked. Pieces of shell were in the oyster and they weren't even scrubbed properly with beards hanging off that I had to rip off otherwise they would have been in my mouth. The food prices for lunch match those of dinner making it hard to get something after your oysters to fill you up. While some of the appetizers we had were good, others were average, lacking seasoning. Too expensive for this quality
We had a reservation & decided to sit at the bar, which was perfect for us! The oyster list included 12 different varieties, we chose a few & asked the waiter for his favorites - they were all excellent!! My husband had the lobster roll, which he said was just OK, not the best he's had (not a good sign when he said the buttered roll was the best part of it) we both agreed my dinner was excellent (atlantic cod). The restaurant is pretty small (like most in the South End) so I'm not sure it would be great for a large group, but it was perfect for a date-night!!
B&G was recommended to us by a friend, and it was a fantastic choice. Great food - from appetizers through dessert. The fried oyster appetizer was GREAT, melted in your mouth, as was the snowpea salad. The fresh oysters (selected for us by the waiter) were all so fresh and the whole table enjoyed those. As far as main courses, the lobster roll is a classic, and the main fish dishes were well prepared/tasty. The blueberry tart was so good we should have ordered 3 of them... Good wine list, and service was excellent.
The meals were great. We were disappointed that they were out of cherry stones - in fact, the little necks were more like micro necks - very tasty but tiny. Still, the service was excellent, they recommended an excellent wine paring and the meals were amazing. I loved every bite of the Sturgeon - what a brilliant dish!!! Still remembering it fondly. My partner had the lobster roll as usual and it was its usual delight albeit the most expensive version of a New England classic that I have ever had. It has been a while since we have been there but we will be back again!
Made the reservation few weeks in advance, so we were really dissapointed when we were offered the table right at the entrance, where there is a lot going on and people constantly stand over your table. Matter was resolved pretty quickly and we were ok with the table we eventually got. witress was lovely, food was great and the white Rioja was a find!
This was our first trip to B and G, but it won't be our last. The food was outstanding, and we had salad, soft shelled crabs, and fried oysters. The service was friendly and pleasant even though the place was absolutely bustling. It is not a quiet, elegant restaurant but the food was fresh and perfect. Probably our only significant complaint was that the fried oysters came in the sauce already, and some people like less sauce than others (or none at all). There aren't a lot of dessert choices, but most people won't feel like dessert if they have an appetizer or salad and an entree. B and G is on our go-to list now.
The food and ambiance are great especially when you get the outdoor seatings during the summer time. However, its service is not good during dinner time. I asked for more explanations for the variety of the oysters and told the waiter I was looking for the kind with smaller size and more sweet. The response I got is "just order these three kinds" then one kind was from Washington (you know its size is normally bigger). My appertizer came with the main dishes so my fish became cold after finishing the appertizer.
Great food, oysters were really delicious, lobster roll was perfect. Unfriendly staff, not the first time I have thought that, but knowledgeable regarding the menu. Will say it is the only Barbara Lynch restaurant that I find the staff so unfriendly. Staff at her other restaurants are fabulous!
My boyfriend and I went here for my birthday dinner. It was absolutely perfect. The food was innovative and truly delicious. The staff was incredibly friendly and very knowledgeable. I will definitely be back next time I am in town. Overall wonderful experience.
I must admit that after reading a number of so-so and lousy reviews I had sort of regreted booking this restaurant. The bad reviews were unfounded. The place, food, and drink were all great. Oysters were fresh and delicious. My wife and I split a soft shell crab appetizer (she doesn't like raw oysters). Should have ordered 2. It was delicious. Not overcooked or over breaded. Blue cod entree was great. Only beef: we are both on very low sugar diets and enjoy a 1/2 cup of strawberries as our indulgent dessert. Alas, they were out. As more and more people give up sugar, places would be well advised to anticipate such a want. Lots of couples, young and old enjoying this seafood treasure.
The restaurant is on the corner of a pretty, tree lined street. Enter through a gate which takes one into a lush green garden with tables. The inside decor is sixties "cool" and comfortable. The oyster selection is excellent, mostly from the northeast. The oysters are fresh, briny, superb with all flavor nuances preserved. The lobster roll was perfect without too much mayonnaise. The wine list has affordable international selections. Our waitress was knowledgeable, friendly, and perfectly attentive. Overall, a great neighborhood oyster/seafood bar. I'm definitely going back on my next trip to Boston.
Food was not good was so ever. Had soft-shell crab, chowda, sea bass. Only thing fairly good was oysters and wine which were extremely over priced. Can get same thing at legal seafood for much better service. Our waitress was not friendly and when asked to recommend a dish her reply was everything is good. Will not be back!
Had a very good dinner here. Our server was phenomenal, had extensive knowledge of the food preparation and wine list. Best seat in the house - sitting on the banquettes all the way on Tremont Street side, side by side with my honey, watching over the bar scene and most of the dining room.
