Azzurro Ratings and Reviews
I’ve been here many times before and this was by far my worst!
I’ve talked to my wife about Azzurro’s each time, so she wanted to go their for our Valentine meal..
What a mistake!
We had a very tiny table for two that I kept hitting my knee on! And we hardly had room for our meal, bread and wine glasses to fit on!!
This table was in front of a very noisy and loud bar, it was located near the front door where each time the door opened you felt a breeze!
This was far from the experience I wanted to have with my wife on valentines, I truly wish we shared this romantic day in another establishment.
THe location of the restaurant is good with easy parking. The decor is pleasing. Service was very good an food was excellent. Only problem was the level of noise was almost intolerable. I would urge the owners to find a way to reduce the noise, perhaps by putting large groups in one area while reserving a section for quiet dining.
Needed to request a change of tables --- first one was too near the wall and we could not sit comfortably. Second was directly under the air conditioning and was too cold. Service was slow, noise level was too high. They are crowding too many tables in a too small space. Food was good, bread needed to be sliced, lack of attention from waiter, etc. Generally okay, but could stand some improvement.
This used to be so much better. They were severely understaffed leaving most of the dining room worked by one server. She was certainly doing the best she could but it was an impossible expectation. Perhaps the restaurant is trying to save on labor costs since it was indicated by other staff that she had that heavy of a load every night. That certainly did not wreck the experience however the very mediocre food preparation and presentation certainly did.
We will not go back.
We’ve been to Azzurro and enjoyed it, but it has not made it into our rotation for regular dining. A gift card we had from Christmas put it back on our radar. Our experience was a mixed bag.
We had a nice table and were greeted promptly. We ordered cocktails, which were properly prepared. However, I discovered that the bourbon I ordered wasn’t what I was served. I suspected something was amiss with my drink, but chalked it up to variations in how the drink can be made. I should have asked.
Our food was good, but not great. Both our pasta dishes were prepared with fresh ingredients, but were unremarkable. Generous portion sizes ensured we had lunch the next day.
Our experience was marred by sub-par service for a restaurant of this caliber and price point. We never learned our server’s name. I asked for a wine list when our entrees arrived but he never returned so I could order a glass. A table next to us was told specials we didn’t hear about.
We left full, having had drinks, an appetizer and entrees in the course of an hour. What was intended to be a nice date night out ended up being a rather mediocre experience.
Azzurro has been a mainstay in the established RVA food scene for more than a decade. It is particularly popular with the U of R corridor. Excellent service and beautiful interior - it's a semi-casual alternative to West End favorites like Portico. The noise level can be high at peak times, but the wood oven pizzas and elegant pasta dishes (see nightly Orzo specials) as well as seafood specials are a fine trade off. The wine and beer selection by the glass is terrific and seating at the bar is available for dining as well.
Had not been to Azzurro in a while so thought we would try it with some friends of ours. We had a reservation for 4 and were promptly seated. I had forgotten how tight some of the tables were in the back. Nice atmosphere and all, but really felt like we were sitting with the party next to us at times. Service was very good - attentive without being overwhelmed. Everyone enjoyed the Caesar salad that both couples ordered and split two ways. The entrees were good but not great with generous portions. I think I remembered the flavors of the dishes being more vibrant in previous visits, but thought that was missing this time around. Still good, but not quite what I expected from one of the long running Richmond Italian establishments. Definitely worth a visit and I will go back, but may be a bit before I do.
This used to be my favorite restaurant, but my last 2 experiences have not been good. Great food, but the experience was one of the worst I have ever had. The last 2 times I was at Azzurros the staff kept on coming over to ask us if we wanted a box for our food. We had to repeatedly tell them we were still eating, but that didn’t stop them from coming over. The most recent time I was there, in addition to the above problem I had a problem when paying. Here’s what happened... We wanted to pay for our meals separately, so I labeled what each person had.. two of the three of us had dinner and wine and the other just had dinner and no drink. The waiter said no problem and then gave himself an automatic 20% tip (apparently if you split checks that’s what they do, which is fine, but the waiter should have told us when we asked to split the check initially. Then he went on to do it INCORRECTlY, so we had to give each other cash to make up for his mistake). I called the manager over and he told me I should have noticed their policy on splitting checks, because everyone reads the fine print while ordering... He then said that he would talk to the waiter. He must have spoken to him, because the waiter then came over and was quite rude, saying that he did tell us.. he finally agreed that he did tell us AFTER he brought our credit cards back, then stormed off... I was a regular at this restaurant and couldn’t believe the treatment I received! Very disappointing.
When our family has something special to celebrate we frequently choose Azzurro: it's close to home, great parking, great service, excellent food and wine, variety of daily specials...the list is pretty long. We've never been disappointed and, in fact, we've attended large events here and enjoyed them just as much.
New Year's Eve with VIP friends visiting. They exceeded our expectations with an exceptional seating in front of the fireplace. The service was great and food was as we expected "Exceptional"! We thank you so much for the wonderful occasion to show off your restaurant
To our VIP friends.
Thank you so much
Went for New Year's Eve dinner with a small group. It was nice. Food portions are huge. Everything was prepared well and the service was excellent. It did feel a bit tight with tables very close to each other. I would go back again for another delicious meal!
We enjoyed Christmas Eve dinner as did many others. There were no delays even with a very full restaurant. The menu is authentic Italian with good daily special options. Our waiter was efficient and knowledgeable. The ability to order a half salad was great. The pasta was fresh and hot. The wine list was good and reasonable. We really enjoyed it!
I was treating a friend of mine to a "Christmas" lunch and the setting was perfect with the live fire! Our table was located right by the fireplace so it made the occasion even more special. The wait staff was attentive but not hovering which was very pleasant. The food was generous and delicious!! It had been may years since I had eaten at Azzurro's and I am so glad I made the trip back...I will definitely keep Azzurro's at the top of my list for future dining. Thank you for the delightful luncheon and happy holidays! Stephanie
Was very disappointed this time,. We went to have a Christmas lunch and there was only one waiter for the entire dining room. Service was slow and not very accomodating. Our hot tea was not hot, he seems rushed and unwilling to repeat the specials when there was a elderly person at the table that was hard of hearing. This was not the usual special attention that we are given and service was very slow.
