Axel's River Grille - Mendota Ratings and Reviews
I meet with two gal pals for lunch here every few months. We love the service and the great food. We always stay way too long talking but the wait staff is always polite and does not bug us. The food selections are very good and cooked to perfection. Prices are excellent. I highly recommend. I had an Axel's burger with melted brie, smoked bacon and grilled onions, with tons of delicious vinegar seasoned (?) french fries. ($15.00 - worth it!) . SO good. When my friend accidentally took my doggie bag home with half my burger, I shed a tear.
We've been coming to Axel's in Mendota for 20+ years, mostly for early evening and weekend get-togethers with friends. We usually dine on appetizers and maybe a soup or salad. Axel's is top in these categories. The wait staff is friendly and competent and the noise level encourages conversation.
We had Sunday lunch. I had the Omelet and my godchild had Eggs Oscar. We both enjoyed the food and of course the Popover. I had never been to this Axel,s although I have gone by it many times on the bike trail. It is fun driving to Mendoza because my parents brought me down there often when I was a child. Thank you for a lovely linch
Unfortunately, we waited 45 minutes to be seated with a 7:15 reservation. The small entrance was packed with people and all were seated far after their "reserved" time. It seems the management would prefer to extend their dinner rush and pack in more customers than to honor punctuality and customers evening plans.
While the meal and the service was excellent, we were seated 35 minutes after our reservation time. We were going to dinner for my dad’s 77th birthday and ended up having to stand nearly the entire time waiting for a table which is a long time time to require some people to stand. Also, I had specifically requested a table (not a booth) on my reservation, and when they finally went to seat us, we were led to a booth. This then led to another 10 minute wait while we waited for an actual table to open up. I understand this is a popular restaurant for many reasons and often for special occasions. While we will most likely return, we won’t go on a weekend night or for a special occasion again.
It seemed like they were understaffed for a busy Friday night. We were seated on time with our reservation but the rest of the service was so slow. The coconut shrimp and the accompanying rice was overcooked and not as good as usual. Prime rib was sub par. The back room corner was so dark, even young 20/20 eyes needed to use a phone flashlight to read the menus! Overall, just not as good as it has been in the past.
Have been enjoying Axels for many years. Tonight's visit was a less than exceptional experience. Food had to be replaced as original selection was not edible and the flow of the dining experience was ruined. The service was not timely either. Hope this was a one time event for what i consider the standard bearer for supper club dining experience.
This was our second time going to Axels. Our server, Nicole, was on the spot with our drinks and order. Our food was exactly to specification (we each requested one thing about our meals), and was very tasty! The coconut shrimp was huge and perfectly cooked. Everything was great.
Very warm & cost atmosphere. Great food. Little disappointed that they didn’t offer their dinner menu on Christmas Eve. We did have a good menu not just what we went there for I should have asked as we would have gone somewhere else that served a full menu. Love their steaks & lobster & Sea Bass. Next time.
Fabulous food with great atmosphere. Step up booths line the wall, lots of mirrors and mood lighting. Dinner at Axels in Mendota Heights is always such a treat! Yummy popovers start your meal and many signature dishes were enjoyed at our table. From the Wedge salad to Axel’s Famous Walleye. Their Holiday Peppermint cheesecake was delicious!! Can’t wait to go back!
I have dined at this restaurant three or four times in the last year for business dinners. I have always had very good service and quality entrees. The menu is decent with the usual assortment of steaks, fish and other foods. Steaks have always been the perfect temperature, and the French Onion soup is some of the best I have had. Overall, this is a safe, predictable restaurant where I know my party will have a good experience. The staff is always accommodating, and the ambiance and decor is very nice. When full, the restaurant can be a bit loud, but so can any place a person goes.
We had a great server. It was quite loud, but the restaurant was busy with people celebrating the holidays. They make a great Bloody Mary, but the food is always hit or miss. The hit this time was the salmon...it was cooked perfectly. The miss was the roasted veggies which were cold, hard and tasteless.
A favorite spot to eat whether it is brunch, lunch, or dinner. We had brunch today. The food flavors were good but I thought the food temp was luke warm. I know they would have heated it if I asked. I was just surprised since we were early and it wasn't crowded. Service is always excellent, all staff friendly, and the atmosphere is warm.
We had great service and were warmly welcomed. We felt the portions were ridiculously huge...we felt it was a bit of a 50's place. For example, the rib eye steak was enough for 2 or more people...and the pot roast was a bit salty. We do not plan to return regrettably.
We go to Axel's frequently and were delighted that they had added a few new things to their menu. We both had the "new" pork chop and it was absolutely out f this world! SCRUMPTIOUS!!! Our service was also truly outstanding! It was the perfect "holiday date night!"
