Axel's Chanhassen Ratings and Reviews
We were pleased to see the table was set and ready for us even though we arrived about 15 minutes early. The server was very attentive throughout the evening with filling our water and checking on us in the back room. She did totally forgot to bring out the salads and soup until the meal was served but was very apologetic and it wasn't that big a deal to us. The salmon was excellent. The ribs were dry and overcooked - we should have sent them back.
We were here with friends. Afterwards I asked my husband how his food was. He said he hardly remembered eating it. We were chatting and laughing with friends but usually if food is better than average, you remember it. This was average food. Not bad, not good.
The service was not great. But not bad either. We had to hunt her down when we had a question about our gift card.
All in all a good place. Not a great place.
We went for dinner to celebrate my wife's birthday before a show at the Chanhassen Dinner Theater. The food was outstanding and our server was fantastic. Brought us a piece of cake with a candle in it to celebrate the birthday. This will be our go to dinner before a show spot.
Food was great. Two of us had salmon and two steak. My disappointment was we were seated in a nice, quieter booth with menus and water and then waited at least 20 minutes for a server to take our order! Popovers were brought to the table cold and doughy. They could forget those as far as I'm concerned. I'll try them again for a special occasion, but if it's like this last time we won't be back.
After reading reviews on Open Table, I was inclined to cancel my reservation. Recent reviews have been less than positive. But having not eaten there for two years I thought I'd go back.
My wife and I arrived at 6:45 and were promptly seated. And then...roughly 5 minutes until a server greeted us. When one is seated at a restaurant you should expect to be greeted in 1-2 minutes max. This is the basics in the industry. We ordered a bottle of wine and when the wine was delivered, an appetizer. The app was delivered (and weirdly placed away from where the two of us were seated), and then we didn't see the server again for an extended period of time. She finally returned and took our order.
Here's what was weird. It was a Saturday evening and the place was dead. I mean if you are trying to make money in the restaurant business, you'd think you'd be busy on a weekend. Literally (and I counted) half the tables were empty. And adding to the weirdness, all the servers seemed to be rushing around. To what?
My wife order the filet, I order surf and turf. My wife's filet was properly cooked at medium. My steak, order medium rare, came out medium well. Not even close to my selection. After showing the steak to the server, a gentlemen who I assume was the kitchen manager came out an apologized. He also indicated they would remove my meal from the invoice, which they did. A nice gesture.
Here's the thing - if Axel's desires to change the reviews on Open Table and fill tables, they need to do the basics. Attentive service and food cooked to order are the basics. It's not complicated, especially when you aren't busy.
Figure it our people - or soon your restaurant will be closing its doors.
The service was great, the food was awful. The scallops were flavorless, the walleye had more bones than any fish I've ever had in a restaurant, and I was raised in northern WI, so I have had lots of fish in restaurants. Even the chicken meals were underwhelming. If you were to take our waitreas, and put her in front of great food, it would have been perfect.
I should have read the recent OpenTable reviews before dining here, or at least to warn me about the experience. Very similar themes--waited for a few too many minutes after being seated to get water/drink order; drinks/cocktails were empty for about 10-15 minutes(!!) in the middle of the meal; our server (maybe this is the restaurant policy?) had to do all of the drinks/appetizer/entree busing, only thing she got help with was someone else filled our water.
It appears that our server was loaded up with several people who came in at the same time instead of allocating them to different servers, but again, by looking at the other reviews, it also appears that this was not an isolated event during only our visit.
Our server actually had a pretty good attitude and was hustling and the food was decent, but it was a painful experience as on several occasions we all just looked at ourselves, waiting and wondering when someone was going to revisit the table.
And it can often be annoying or just gratuitous when a restaurant's manager stops by your table to ask "how is everything going" but it seems to me that would have been a welcome situation and maybe necessary at this restaurant, if the manager was in fact even in the business. From reading the recent reviews, perhaps he/she is on holidays somewhere.
Good was very good. Service was very poor. Everything from wrong bottle of wine, spilled wine during pouring, incorrect meal details, mistake on check. Attention to detail not there and no management presence. Then insult from Open Table that we never checked in for reservation. Live in Chanhassen and eat out often but will never eat at Axel's again. They just do not care about the folks that keep them in business.
Came for our anniversary and it wasn't anything special. The food was okay (not the best flavors/seasoning) We had horrible service... We sat without service for over 30 min. We never had the chance to order a second cocktail or desert. We had to walk up to the host stand to ask to pay our bill. Very disappointed.
Our server was knowledgeable and efficient but did not rush us. I had the salmon and my husband had the bacon wrapped scallops (scallops were huge and done nicely). All entrees come with a choice of soup or salad and popovers with a maple butter. There is also a choice of sides, a variety of potatoes, a wild rice and quinoa mix , and a variety of veggie sides. We both opted for the green beans with an Asian flavored glaze and the rice blend. Everything was very good. Axels also has a great happy hour menu with a decent selection of appetizers.
The Tuesday Crab special brought me in (not the first visit) my wife enjoyed the walleye and the accoutrements were nicely done. The crab was disappointing to say the least. I've never seen snow crab that small and extremely difficult to achieve a bite of crab meat. I will come back, but I won't order the snow crab. I'd rather pay more for something to eat.
The AC happened to be out - I don't know that they had any floor fans going to compensate.
Our server was good but a bit over attentive at the start. We felt rushed to order, but we took our time. Our guest, birthday event, did tell server his steak was tough. She offered an upgrade to filet mignon; he declined due to the extra time to cook. To spare my guest, I did not tell our server that my prime rib was tough and did not have a robust flavor. Beef at Axel's? Not so much! However, lunch with my boss last week was great - and it was the steak salad. Go figure. Our server that day forgot that we were on the patio (the only ones) in all estimation. She was not on top of our table.
The menu prices tend to be high so if cost is an issue, this may not be your first choice. The quality of both the food and service made us forget the menu prices as we found them both incredible. The menu has a good mix of surf and turf options as well as a good mix of other dishes. We'll be back!
I'm not sure what is happening to this restaurant lately. Axel's has been my go to restaurant for several years when celebrating with family, friends, and dinner with clients. I hope this was an off day for the staff...
First, our waiter was very slow to make the rounds at our table throughout the visit. We had menu questions and empty glasses for quite a while before we were able to order our food. I ordered my usual Caesar salad with my meal and the lettuce was very wet and the whole thing was almost soupy. My mother in law ordered the twin lobster tails and said they were dry and at room temperature by the time she got them. My father in law and I had the Smokehouse Special which was brisket and chicken. The brisket was overcooked at some point as the meat was very dry. But what made it worse was the fact that it was at room temperature and covered with 3x the barbeque sauce you would ever want.
It was frustrating to see an upscale restaurant that I've been to many times deliver such poor quality across the board while being less than half full. Our entire party left disappointed and I was embarrassed for having talked this place up so much to my family. For most of them, it was their first (and will be their last) time.
C'mon Axel's, you're better than this!
6:30 reservation for 10 for my wife's birthday. 3 of our group had just turned 21 and were ID'd for drinks - no problem with that. Then for some reason another waitress came over and carded them again. After several minutes I noticed that the bartender was standing around at the bar and not attending to our drink order for a good 15 minutes - not sure if order wasn't entered yet or what. Drinks arrived 40 minutes after sitting down - 40. Never seen this in my life. Food orders were promptly taken as soon as the waitress brought the drinks, meaning I couldn't give a toast to her birthday since the waitress was now going to instantly do food orders. Food arrived at 8:30 - a full 90 MINUTES after we sat down! My wife's scallops looked a bit undercooked - no biggie it's only seafood right? bummed her out.
Food was uninspiring, particularly for $377 before tip. Waitress got the short end of the stick on whole experience (it truly took a village to mess this whole experience up) - I never tip less than 15% but was so infuriated I gave her $7 on our $162 dollar bill. Then another 20-25 minutes sorting through the bills was the coup degrace on the whole experience, thus leaving at 8:50 - 2 hours and 20 minutes of excruciating torture.
I don't know what's going on with Axels but this is clearly the worst experience I've had after 15+ years of eating here several times a year. I won't be going back.
Love this restaurant. Service is always excellent. Food is delicious. Great for the foody with interesting preparations but also fabulous with the tried and true favorites. It's only 5 minutes from home but would drive to eat here. Love their New Year's special dinner. All you can eat walleye and all you can eat crab nights. Never been disappointed!
We have been to Axel's in Chanhassen 3-4 times this past year....sometimes just as a couple and sometimes with friends...either before a show or for a special night. Food is always great and so is the service. The service last night was exceptional and we had a very nice time with friends. Prefer booth seating though as it can be a bit loud sitting at the tables (depending on the people sitting near you). Let room for dessert which was excellent. Portions were large and we all took some of the dinner home with us. Last night was Walleye Wednesday which is an exceptional deal (pricewise) and the walleye is very good.
Everything was fine however they had a pretty full house. The table we were at was kind of a hot spot were we both started sweating as well as the wait staff. They had a number of fans out but didn't help much. Still a very nice evening. Anchovies with their Caesar salad, cool.
My husband and I went for my birthday. I ordered all you can eat crab legs and definitely not worth it, no meat in them. Husband ordered steak which was delicious and the service was GREAT. I would go back but will never recommend the all you can eat crab legs.
