Axel's Chanhassen Ratings and Reviews
Our server, Janet was outstanding. My wife and I had my 13 year old daughter with us. We were ordering ala carte. She quickly saw that it would be better to order one full meal and the other items separately which would save us some money. She also saw we were trying to order more healthy options and made some recommendations. Service was speedy and impeccable. Of course, I left a large tip.
New Years Eve - they were not well equipped. It was -10 degrees outside and heat had gone out several days prior. Instead of letting customers know, placed a few space heaters around which people were literally fighting over (many people were actually being very rude about it). Everyone was huddled over their tables in coats and scarves. On top of that, wait staff did not seem to be in a festive mood in the least (granted the situation they were working with was also difficult I'm sure). Managers did their best to try to accommodate, however everything fell very short. We have been here many times and had decent experiences however this has been the second time we've attempted to come on an "occasion" and were extremely disappointed.
Axels in Chanhassen is always a favorite of ours. It is one of the few places in SW suburbs where you can go to the bar for a drink before dinner and name any drink from the 40's to current and they actually know how to make it. The bartenders are professionals here which doesn't seem to be the case in many other restaurants. The food is always good and the ambiance is cozy. We come here for dinner often but also stop in for a drink and an appetizer at the bar just as often.
Our usual choice at the bar is mussels and french onion soup!
Apparently the heat hasn’t been working in 4 Days (outside temp is -15 degrees). It was maybe 58 degrees where we were sitting (thermostat was set to 80) and waitress said it doesn’t go any higher and the furnace wasn’t working. We FROZE!!
Server didn’t bring out popovers until we asked for them. Food was average, we had to eat so fast because our feet were frozen. When your waitstaff are told to wear sweaters and the hostess is wearing a jacket while at work there is something wrong. We should have been notified or the place should have closed.
Great food, and our server was good, however, there didn't seem to be any heat in the place. -10 below outside and we were seated by the door ( New Year's Eve) so it was a bit chilly in the place. I saw a few people complain about their location and got moved. Management maybe should have said something when we arrived and/or offered a hot specialty drink due to the situation.
We arrived and revealed that we had a reservation - to a hoard of teenage girls with very glittery eyes, the leader of whom told us that “...like Open Table just kept allowing people to reserve tables...and people aren’t leaving...so like, you can either have a high top or wait for a while...” I thought that the whole point of a reservation was that you didn’t have to wait. Luckily people did leave and we got a table relatively quickly. Our rather SEASONED waitress was not particularly attentive. I got the feeling she is used to getting her 20% without much effort. It took 10 minutes after being seated to be greeted and get water, and then after about 10 minutes MORE she introduced herself a second time and took our drink order. She never once noticed that drinks were empty or ever asked if we wanted a refill.
The food was very good. The service was subpar. Despite the fireplace, it was cold enough that I felt like I needed my coat most of the time we sat there. Just okay and not great for a special occasion.
Unfortunately we didn't have dinner at Axels. We had an appetizer and a waitress who never came back to our table. After sitting for 20 min. as she visited with the wait staff we asked a waiter to get our bill. The manager came out, apologized, and didn't charge us for our drink and food. May try again as the menu looked quite good
Wow, I'm not a happy camper. They had no heat in the building, did not tell us this until we were seated in a back booth, We asked to be moved closer to the fireplace, which they did. We were fairly warm except for my feet. Cherry in the drink that was ordered was flat and weird
looking like it was very old. Bacon wrapped scallops-the bacon was raw. No one from management came around to see if the guests were OK. I get a better feeling that they appreciate the business from my local Perkins. This is the 2nd time I have been there, and I feel
they need to up their game a little- especially in the making people feel welcome department.
We were a bit disappointed that nothing special happened for my husbands 40th birthday dinner, as we noted it in the reservation as well as to the hostess. No candle, no song, no cake. You only turn 40 once! It was a busy night and our server was hustling and the food was good. We'd go back again but have to admit it was a little letdown.
Pro: Arrived earlier than our reservation but were seated immediately. Appetizer was excellent. Food arrived hot and in a timely fashion. When waiter found out we were celebrating a birthday, he brought a piece of dessert to the table. Waiter was attentive to our needs the entire evening.
Con: Drinks were a little watered down.
This was my first time at Axels after hearing good things about it. I got the New York strip and ordered it medium. The steak was cooked correctly but the steak did not taste fresh, like it had been frozen or in the fridge for a week. My girlfriend got the pork. It was dry and over cooked. The sides of potatoes and green beans were ok. At $32 for the steak and $28 for the pork it felt overpriced. Could pay less for the same thing at Outback.
We were disappointed by the "change in menu" that we experienced. We went to your website and pulled what we thought was your Thanksgiving menu only to find out when we got there that it was for another Axel's in Roseville? Dramatic difference in menu and not a buffet as we were looking forward to. Why such a dramatic difference in menus? The Chanhassen menu was certainly lackluster when you are comparing it to the Roseville menu! Are the Chanhassen customers not worth as much?(I am kidding here, just a bit) The food was very good as usual, not the menu we were looking forward to. Waitress was good, service was good. We were in the small dining room but no table décor, nothing to mark the holiday. I was embarrassed a bit since I had planned this outing based on the wrong menu! Again, I am still puzzled as to why you have different Holiday menus at each restaurant. That was a disappointing.
We were pleased to see the table was set and ready for us even though we arrived about 15 minutes early. The server was very attentive throughout the evening with filling our water and checking on us in the back room. She did totally forgot to bring out the salads and soup until the meal was served but was very apologetic and it wasn't that big a deal to us. The salmon was excellent. The ribs were dry and overcooked - we should have sent them back.
