Stepping onto the third floor of the Downtown Athletic Club, patrons of the Ax Billy Grill are greeted by a family friendly dining room and a popular sports bar. Named after the historic Ax Billy building where the restaurant is located, our unique blend of Pacific Northwest cuisine, wood burning oven and third floor views of downtown Eugene make the Ax Billy one of the best kept secrets in town. The Ax Billy Grill is well suited for business lunches, game watching and social gatherings. People can often be seen outside on our third floor terrace catching views of the South hills while enjoying dinner and drinks. Our terrace is open Memorial Day through Labor Day.

I contemplated rating this with two stars because the chicken sandwich and steak strip appetizers were good. However, to start with, 2/3 of the menu was unavailable due to lack of seafood (blamed on recent snow and not being able to get deliveries) when the supplier was literally 6 blocks away and roads clear for a few days. Additionally, the management made no effort to modify the menu to substitute. This left burgers, sandwiches, pizza, and nachos as entree choices in what would be a nicer restaurant. My daughter and I ordered appetizers and it was 20 minutes before our server returned (with the appetizer, at which time she took our order.) She was friendly and apologetic, though since there were only three tables seated in the entire restaurant/bar and three other employees on the floor it really made no sense for the delay in ordering. My daughter ended up settling for chicken nachos with a side of avocado (which the server stated not sure if they had either.) We were going to a show and had allowed what we thought was sufficient time to make it. As a result of the extended time it took for the orders to be served, we had to request to-go boxes for the likelihood that we could not eat fast enough. As I previously stated, my sandwich tasted good but the nachos arrived, not only without avocado and an explanation, but without chicken as well. Simply a pile of chips with cheese melted on them and an abundance of jalapeños and a smattering of tomato. The bell peppers that were included and requested on the side were non-existent as well. While the server did not charge for the nachos when pointed out, there was basically just another excuse for delivery given. Basically I paid quite a bit for a sandwich and a daughter that did not have a meal. What a disappointment.

The service was great and the food was good, but we were disappointed. The menu shown in Open Table is apparently the bar menu but when you make your reservation on Open Table it is for the fine dining restaurant and when we asked we were told we could not order from that menu. The fine dining was delicious but not a great variety.

The setting is very nice. The beet appetizer and calamari were excellent. It then took 30+ minutes or more for our dinner to arrive. All of them were mediocre, and for the price, I would expect excellent. Not sure I will go back.

Mother's Day Brunch today at Downtown Athletic Club was a HUGE DISAPPOINTMENT!! It was too much money$$ for the quality and quantity of the food.

The buffet had few selections and what was there was at best mediocre. There was a substandard quinoa salad and a beet salad, but no greens. Two nearly empty bowls of berries and some yogurt. Pre-made (cold) French toast and waffles, cold dry scrambled eggs and bacon. There was some ham, dry salmon, and decent prime rib, but nothing worth a second helping. There were some questionable muffins and small cinnamon rolls but no plain rolls or bread. The dessert table was bleak and with an hour to go was down to two unappetizing choices and the self/serve lukewarm coffee was in an aluminum pitcher.

Our daughter is both gluten and dairy intolerant which is usually not a problem but there was very little she could eat today. The service was pathetic to non-existent.

$185 plus tip was a total waste of money. We will NOT GO BACK! We would have had a better meal at a diner. The only good part was time spent with our daughter and son-in-law.

I’m sorry, but we have never been SO disappointed in a brunch! We went to brunch here last year, and it was lovely! Food was amazing, ambiance beautiful and servers were friendly! We invited family from Portland this year and I was sooooo.... embarrassed 😞 we had to go to a completely different room to get our COLD TASTELESS SKIMPY FOOD. Always out of hash browns and the variety of food was very strange. I usually never say negative things, but this was such a disappointment! For $38.50 . And, we paid $5.00 extra for unlimited champagne, and they refused to let me omit fruit juice which I’m not supposed to have! The only positive thing I can say is , the prime rib and ham were good, as was the girl checking us in. We made the best of a BAD SITUATION, but sadly we went from raving over last year, to never wanting to return. Most of the desserts were dry and hard as well. Hopefully, you’ll get someone else to organize next year.

The Prime Rib special dinner at the DAC this week was great. Prime rib was perfectly done and the thyme and sausage bisque served after the salad was delicious. As always, the cocktails are well prepared and creative.

The only real issue was how much time elapsed between ordering our meals and being served (approximately 50 minutes). This was a business lunch meeting, so the net result was having to return to work at our respective workplaces late. It would have been good to have been forewarned about how long certain menu items might take to prepare. If we'd known, we may have limited our selections to those items requiring limited preparation (such as the soup of the day and salads).
