Avra Estiatorio on 48th Ratings and Reviews
I ordered the lamb chops and requested a medium rare temperature. After sending the dish back three times the general manager recommended the steak! I said, I cannot believe that a Greek Restaurant of this caliber cannot prepare lamb.
They did not charge for the meal. It was New Years and it was highly disappointing.
The staff was very nice. The food was less than average.
I was unpleased with my overall service at this restaurant. The server I had was lackluster in his attentiveness and service to me and my guest to be as positive as possible. He would not make eye contact with us and did not even come to check on us during our dining experience AT LEAST ONCE, though he checked on the tables around us 3-4 times (I counted). He wouldn't even acknowledge us for 10 minutes after the busboy cleaned our table until we flagged him down. My guest was from Tokyo and made comments about the service as well. I would not go to this place and will tell my friends the same. I'm all about feeling welcomed during my dining experience as well as enjoying the food and I did not receive this feeling in the least bit.
Avra has wonderful food and an excellent wine selection.
Service was lacking though.
We were seated immediately, but then seemed to have been forgotten.
After getting menus it seems we were forgotten again.
Service picked up a little after that, but then failed again when they dropped the bill on the table and it wasn't out bill. Given the lacking service and that huge faux pas with the bill they didn't even comp anything, just keep apologizing from one goof up to the next.
It was so loud it was difficult to talk.
However, we did have an enjoyable time and the food was delicious.
After a terrific night out with cousins we sat down to a Mediterranean seafood extravaganza equal to the food in the Greek Islands. AVRA are true purveyors of quality fish that never disappoints us. We had a diverse tasting of grilled octopus, halibut, lagostines, shrimp and bronzino that were all simply delicious.
This was my second time there and it was extremely disappointing. Despite having a reservation we waited 20 minutes to be seated while watching several people who arrived after us just walk right by and get seated. Front desk was very disorganized and the waiter was terrible. The food was just OK this time (I thought it was very good the first time I went to Avra). I doubt I'll ever go back again.
It was very crowded but we had a reservation and were seated within five minutes of our time. You are seated very close, so you have to like the "sardine" feeling. The waiter was a bit dismissive and impatient for us to order after we ordered drinks, but we ignored him. The Greek salad was extremely disappointing but the fish entrees were delicious. Bottom line...lots of better alternatives in NYC.
Fabulous seafood! Mediterranean selections flown in daily, but also great USA selections and wonderful sides! The baked clam appetizer, the salmon main, the artic char, and the shrimp all were outstanding! Nice selection of Mediterranean area wines by the glass, and the baklava dessert was a perfect ending!
Although the food was generally excellent, I was surprised that they weren't able to fit a table into the restrooms, because they surely fit tables into every other inch of the restaurant. Be warned - this is not a dining experience. Everything was rushed to turn over the table and there were no more than 6 inches between tables of two, including one clearly put into an aisle. Finally, it was a birthday that was confirmed twice with them and they did nothing - something that should not happen. We couldn't wait to leave to get fresh air and we will never return. My hearing will certainly be better for it.
I have eaten at the madison location several times.
This was my first time eating at the 48th location. They sat us SO far in the back of the restaurant it was ridiculous. The service was awful. We asked for beverages several times from the minute we sat until we were almost done with our meal. Over an hour later they finally brought our tea. The food came out pretty much at the same time and was practically thrown on the table. The waiter was rude and questioned everything we asked him. We asked if they had certain items that the madison location had and he said he had never been there and really didn’t know. Overall it was a horrible meal and experience and we will never go back.
This restaurant was highly recommended and, while the ambiance and food was excellent, the service was very disappointing. We were a little early for our reservation so we started at the bar for a drink. After closing out the bar tab we moved to our table with partially consumed drinks. Once seated, it took a quite a while to be greeted by our server Petros and, by then, our drinks were finished. Our server never asked us if we wanted another drink or wine with our dinner. He also was not very descriptive when we asked a few questions about entrees- and then never came back to ask how we were enjoying our dinner or if we wanted to order anything else. The food itself was great although a bit pricey- $23.95 for a Greek salad was pretty over the top.
