I have eaten at the madison location several times.
This was my first time eating at the 48th location. They sat us SO far in the back of the restaurant it was ridiculous. The service was awful. We asked for beverages several times from the minute we sat until we were almost done with our meal. Over an hour later they finally brought our tea. The food came out pretty much at the same time and was practically thrown on the table. The waiter was rude and questioned everything we asked him. We asked if they had certain items that the madison location had and he said he had never been there and really didn’t know. Overall it was a horrible meal and experience and we will never go back.

This restaurant was highly recommended and, while the ambiance and food was excellent, the service was very disappointing. We were a little early for our reservation so we started at the bar for a drink. After closing out the bar tab we moved to our table with partially consumed drinks. Once seated, it took a quite a while to be greeted by our server Petros and, by then, our drinks were finished. Our server never asked us if we wanted another drink or wine with our dinner. He also was not very descriptive when we asked a few questions about entrees- and then never came back to ask how we were enjoying our dinner or if we wanted to order anything else. The food itself was great although a bit pricey- $23.95 for a Greek salad was pretty over the top.

Delicious Greek fare! The Octopus is a "must have"! Food is fresh and wonderfully prepared. Even the Escarole side dish was amazing. Sit in main dining room or back room (slightly quieter) service was very good and many greek or other wines to choose from.

Couldn’t have been more disappointed. Booked for a birthday lunch for my Mom, party of 3. I called ahead to confirm, when seated at the communal table, I thought we would be take care of. Instead, we were asked to move tables midway through the meal, with the completely rude manager yelling at our delightful server to ‘get us moving’. Extreme waste of time, money and spoiled a special occasion. And fittingly, the food was a complete afterthought .

This was one of my favorite restaurants. This visit, we were seated at a terrible table and the service was awful. Food never disappoints though. Authentic delicious Greek food, you can be healthy or not and have a great meal. You just need to put up with the noise.

Aside from feeling a bit rushed and a mixup about where we would like to be seated it was a fabulous dinner, expertly prepared and attentively served. Once we got through the entre and ordered dessert they stopped rushing us and we enjoyed coffees and cordials. In retrospect we should have made reservations for an hour later on a Sunday night and by that time the rush would have been over

Food was wonderful, service was very attentive. The only minus was the size of the table for two. Greek food is never scarce and we shared various appetizers, but didn’t quite have enough space for our plates. We enjoyed the evening though, I will definitely come back next time we visit NYC and will highly recommend my friends to come.

I found the food I ordered to be relatively bland- though the beets were tasty, they were nothing special. The spanakopita was too "spinachy" with very little dough or cheese. The lamb chops too were "ok" but really nothing I could not have gotten elsewhere. The service seemed rushed despite an early dinner time. Certainly not a good value or memorable visit.

We enjoyed Avra as a group of 5 friends who haven't been together in a while. Avra is a lovely, step-into-Greece type place (I can only imagine how nice it would be in the warmer months, when they open the doors to the small patio). The people greeting us were warm and accommodating, as was the hostess who happily made changes to our reservation due to timing and adding in another guest. The food at Avra is delicious. It's (seemingly) authentic and fresh. The waiter was a bit brusk for my liking, with no time for pleasantries; he was matter of fact and seemed impatient at times. He also would not add a protein to a salad I had ordered, and pointed out that I would need to purchase an entire other entree to accommodate my request. In this day and age, that is unacceptable. Every restaurant in town adds protein to a salad upon request, and most restaurants clearly offer such an add-on at the bottom of the menu. The wine list was nice, with a variety of options. We wanted dessert, but before we knew it the waiter had whisked away the menus and that was that.

Great business and friend/family dining. Very seafood centric. Wait staff is knowledgeable and attentive. Fresh ingredients, reasonable sized portions, kitchen gets the food out with nice pacing. A tad on the expensive side but superior quality food. The chef really knows seafood and fresh fish. A bit noisy for business dining. You have to speak w/a loud voice when the dining room is bustling. Reservations are strongly recommended. If you appreciate and are attracted to the Mediterranean diet, enjoy fresh (not overly sauced) seafood and don't mind spending a little more for top ingredients and presentation, you will really enjoy this establishment. They also have outdoor dining in the nice weather months.

At Avra the fish is always fresh, the service professional, and the ambiance good for talking. Though the prices are on the high side, the quality of food and service is always top rate. You "own" your table until you give it up and will never be rushed along. One could travel to Astoria for equally pleasant --and much more affordable-- Greek dining, but East 48th is certainly more convenient.

We usually have lunch at the 60 th branch of this restaurant and decided to get to know the 48th one.

Lunch during week is a fixed price of 29 dollars, saturday there is not this and this is the price of each of the dishes.

The restaurant was pratically empty but it took a long time to serve us. We order a skanopita that we usually have in the 60 th restaurant and what came was a piece of pie looking horrible and cold. We sent it back. My daighter is allergic to tomatoes and her rice came with them although it was not written in tge menu. Once asked to another side they could not do it without the tomatoes so she had the shrimp by itself. They charged for it and only when we complained they took off the sodas we had from the check. Overall I would not come back to this one although I still recommend the one in 60 th street during lunch and during the week.

A friend and I had an absolutely delightful lunch at Avra Estiatorio. The seating capacity of this restaurant is huge and that allows it to efficiently and quickly serve their dining clientele. The atmosphere is pleasant. We can highly recommend the spanokopita, loup de mer and baklava. All food was tasty and well prepared. We were very pleased and hope to return soon.

Love this restaurant. I've been here a few times when visiting NYC from CT and have never been disappointed. Constantino was our waiter and he took great care of us despite the number of patrons he was waiting on. We love the octopus and never fail to order the Avra chips of thinly sliced zucchini and eggplant. All delicious. We asked for the service to be leisurely since we were meeting old friends and wanted time to catch up. Our wishes were granted and the entrees came out at a leisurely pace. Our grilled king prawns were fantastic, as usual. Almost like lobster tails they're so large and grilled perfectly. The fresh fish which others enjoyed were also perfectly cooked. I love this location of Avra for it's homey, Greek influenced decor. The only negative is that we don't live closer to enjoy the food more often!
