Excellent food. Ok wine list. Very loud. Expensive even for NYC.
overall ambiance and food was great for father's day.
definitely get the grilled octopus+Chilean sea bass appetizer! it's delicious and cooked perfectly.
friendly waiter who helped us decide on what to order and recommendations
i would just say the bus service could be a bit better: it took some time for them to clear our table after we were done eating and getting water refills.
I have been to Avra many times; its a dependable New York City classic, especially if you sit at the lovely terrace. This Sunday lunch it was definitely NOT their day; as I asked how come bread is served with what I think was sweet whipped cream and chocolate dip as I expected the usual savory dip, waiter acted confused and almost offended by the polite question. It appeared to have been mu fault not to have understood weekend brunch dipping welcome trio is olives, cream and fig marmalade or something. Deep apologies.
Grilled sardines, 4 at 28$ was a sad affair; I swear one was just a burned out remnant of its better known juicy and plump Portuguese self and the other 3 barely improved on that state. Greek salad was marginally better (my colleague grilled chicken breasts were in the same category) and when we ordered more bread morose table service chap plumped the small basket (bread was good) in the middle with daggers in his eyes.
Not sure what happened on that Sunday but to sum it up, food was sub-par to what I usually get at Avra and service lugubrious at best downright rude more closer to truth.
Lovely! We ate outside
Service and ambiance were good. Food was of poor taste and value.
Wonderful location for special events like Fathers Day.
We enjoyed the fresh fish and great service! This was my daughter’s choice for a graduation dinner!
My family and I have been coming to Avra for years and there's clearly a serious deterioration in service and quality. Our appetizer (Avra Chips) had a hair on it and was sent back, never heard the slightest apology from the server or manager. The server were making jokes about the Chef needing a haircut. Not going back ever and would not recommend to anyone. Worst dining experience ever in NYC.
Outstanding dinner and Jimmy gave wonderful service
Always great food!!! Been going for years and love the whole appetizer menu.. and all the fish is delicious. The past 2 times the service has been really lacking and getting the attention of the wait staff was a waste of time...
Waited 20 minutes to order wine to find out they were out of it and another 10 to get another bottle...
I have eaten here a few times previously. They have a great wine list to choose from. Prices for wine are in line with what you would expect and they have something for any budget. The octopus appetizer is fantastic and I highly recommend trying it. I had the tuna for my dinner and my wife had the fillet. Both were seasoned and cooked perfectly to order. The sides we had ordered (asparagus and oregano fries) were also seasoned and prepared perfectly. I could not stop eating the fries and the appetizers are enough to split. I have had other fish dishes here before and never had a complaint.
Desert was coffee and a slice of walnut cake. The cake was similar to a carrot cake base without the icing. It was also top notch and I left no crumbs on the plate.
We did sit outside because it was a beautiful night which was nice. It does create a little less ambiance and a lot more noise. The tables were a little crowded with table for 2 being separated by 3"-4" which was a little tight. In the past I have always sat inside which never seemed to be as cramped.
I recommend you check out their menu online and make sure to get a reservation as they do get busy.
even the reservations can be made online which is always a nice feature anywhere you go (I always like that reservations automatically load into my calendar and it makes it so easy to send out reminders/invites to party members).
I will certainty keep going back.
Food was excellent as usual. Service was slow and inattentive. A shame since this has been one of my favorites. Prices on the high side
Love the grief octopus and the branzino for 3. The fish is expensive by the pounds but better than anything I've ever had. Love the patio when the weather cooperates.
this is my go-to place in the neighborhood for fresh, authentic Mediterranean food. Lovely greek salad. The grilled shrimp are always perfect, spinach-rice, potatoes, a grilled fish never disappoints, Service is friendly the restaurant sommelier recommended a fantastic bottle of wine. we will come back
Great food but a bit appalled at the prices
I have gone here often over the years to meet friends for lunch, but this time I was disappointed. The fried calamari was pretty soggy and average, and the lamb in my old favorite lamb salad looked like yesterday’s leftovers at best, shoe leather at worst. The prices have way surpassed the quality of the food, sadly, and ditto the service. (Just because there was a bottle of sparkling water at the table, for example, we should not have had to ask again for our lemonades to be served, once the starters had been put down.) I I’ll look for a new go-to midtown restaurant.
Great brunch, service and ambiance!
Just celebrated our 30th wedding anniversary at Avra! Had an excellent meal and wonderful evening! One of our go to restaurants when we are in NYC!
Excellent food and great service. From the appetizers to the dessert, everything was delicious.
Great food, service and ambiance!
Horrific service, they literally threw food at us without even slowing down. I have been here many times and had a good experience. Tonight was completely different. Probably the worst service I have ever had in a decent restaurant. BTW, I seldom write negative reviews.
Professional service, good food, nice atmosphere. I will visit again.
Great service, delicious food. One of our all time favorite restaurants in the area..................................................................................
I was disappointed for my first time here-picking it for a business meeting. Our waiter was totally inattentive- never introduced himself. I had to ask for the drink menu, drinks, specials, food, etc repeatedly. He never checked on us or offered anything. The food was also somewhat cool and not very warm when it was served to us. Place has potential but I am not sure I would return.
Great food and service
Really crowded and loud
We’ve been coming to Avra since they opened and recently the food comes out lukewarm not HOT. Grilled calamari tastes like steamed calamari - not the same calibur as it was. Not sure what happened.
Great Greek food with nice outside seating, good location
Avra is a lovely restaurant. We took friends from out of town and they loved it. The food and service are excellent.
Family get together
Excellent service from Adonis
As always, food was spectacular. They were understaffed tonight. Impossible to flag down a waiter.
Freshest fish, delicious sides and salads, interesting wine list, great service. I've dined there 20 times and never been disappointed.
Steer clear! When we walked in the hostess couldn’t even be bothered. We stated we had a reservation, but she was more interested in her cell phone rather than seating us. When she was finally done texting she sat us by the bar & entrance to the restaurant - a horribly noisy place to sit. The restaurant was nearly empty at 5:30pm so I was confused by this. As the night progressed, our experience continued to go downhill. The waiter wasn’t farmiliar with the menu at all. He asked me what chicken dish I was referring to? There’s only one chicken dish on the menu. He didn’t know how it was prepared (on or off the bone), my friend asked for the filet medium, but it came out well done. As the restaurant for more crowded the bar area was extremely noisy and people kept bumping into us at the table. The food was good, but overpriced. We won’t be coming back!
As a fellow Greek, I don’t like having to write a negative review about a Greek restaurant but Avra was a disappointment. The food is mediocre but really overpriced ($25 for a Greek salad, really??) and the staff were not very friendly or attentive. Will not be coming back.
The ambiance was pleasant, the service partly a bit arrogant. The food was nice, not spectacular but tasty. I rarely recommend any place unless it is superb..
Food is consistently outstanding. Service was non existent, impersonal and unattentative. Couldn't even find our server to pour our bottle of wine once entrees arrived. Given the prices, this is unacceptable. Servers seemed to have too many tables also.
The shrimp were over cooked
Exaggeratedly expensive, but the food was nice. Service was good, but he restaurant was noisy...
Overall a great experience.
