Love this restaurant. I've been here a few times when visiting NYC from CT and have never been disappointed. Constantino was our waiter and he took great care of us despite the number of patrons he was waiting on. We love the octopus and never fail to order the Avra chips of thinly sliced zucchini and eggplant. All delicious. We asked for the service to be leisurely since we were meeting old friends and wanted time to catch up. Our wishes were granted and the entrees came out at a leisurely pace. Our grilled king prawns were fantastic, as usual. Almost like lobster tails they're so large and grilled perfectly. The fresh fish which others enjoyed were also perfectly cooked. I love this location of Avra for it's homey, Greek influenced decor. The only negative is that we don't live closer to enjoy the food more often!

I have eaten at Avra many time and never had a bad experience until earlier this week. I had a 12:30 reservation to meet a client for lunch. When I arrived at 12:30, there were 20 or so people all checking in at the same time and it became clear that the restaurant had greatly overbooked the time slot. My table was not ready until 1:10 p.m. This is inexcusable for a business lunch as people have appointments and need to get back to their offices promptly. While the food and service (once seated) were excellent as always, I would not go back again and risk having the same experience.

Despite having a reservation, we had to wait over 30 mins after our reservation time to be seated. Once we were seated, the experience felt a little rushed. The food was good, but not the best I've had it there.

We are very disappointed with Agra. We visited many times this place, but we did not it during the las two years or so. We rediscovered an extremely crowded, noisy, regular food and poor service place. Tables are so close that you can better talk with your neighbors rather than with your party or participate in the conversation of others. Waiters works with the goal to replace your table asap. On top on that: it is expensive. We sincerely regret in sending this opinion.

One of the best dining experiences we’ve ever had. Our waiter was knowledgeable, made great recommendations to our group and everyone enjoyed the experience. The complimentary dessert trays were outstanding! We will be back.

This was a fabulous dinner with family, we were given a fabulous booth and the food as always was fantastic. From the salads, to the salmon, the fish was unbelievably fresh and everyone at the table loved everything.

This is a neighborhood gem and is great for business lunches and all occasions!

Avra has been a favorite lunch and dinner spot for a long time. However we booked a table on Sunday at 3:45 ( brunch time) after the NYC marathon. First, the table requested in the bar (banquet seating with rustic table spot in bar) took about 15 minutes to clear and reset ( Note that there were maybe 3 other tables in the entire restaurant at that time. When we finally ordered I mentioned my Dairy Allergy to the waiter ( NO butter, milk, cream, cheese).
When my Ahi salad arrived with everyone else's entree, I asked the waiter if the dressing had dairy—which was then taken away and brought back after everyone else had finished their meal (15-20 minutes later). Also the salad was not nearly as beautifully composed ( lettuce dumped over 3 olives with 4 very thin slices of seared ahi on the top. Not anything like the well composed and generous Ahi from the first plate ( seemed like I had offended the chef with the returned first salad, and he wanted to make it known that he was put off with the return of the salad). Anyway, I'd like to think that this was an anomaly, because during lunch visits during the work week, waiters, and food have been fantastic. Also accommodating allergies has never been a problem in the past—even having the chef making a non-dairy tzatziki sauce using a mayo based concoction with out a request from me, which was delicious.

While the food at Avra was good (once we finally received what we ordered), the service was terrible. We had reservations at 8:15pm and we were not seated until almost 8:45pm. There were no menus on the table and we sat for another 10-15 minutes before a server came over and abruptly said "Are you ready?" There was no introduction, "how are you this evening?", etc. And, no, we weren't ready to order because we had no menus. We were then given food menus only and had to request drink menus. After ordering, we were given food we did not order. We finally got the correct food, and it was great. Certainly not worth the terrible service. I do not plan to return.

Our server Konstantino was phenomenal-- professional, knowledgeable, and personable. We had two boys with us, ages 7 and 6, who are not the best eaters in what was not a "kid-food" style restaurant, and he was so charming and charismatic, both tried octopus for the first time! The food and wine for adults was incredible; I had a terrific pre-race dinner before the NYC Marathon this year. And the entire staff was friendly and accommodating.

I couldn't go back to Greece for my birthday, so we went to AVRA instead! Except for the obvious location in midtown, I really felt like I was in Greece. The food was delicious, and the staff very friendly. I highly recommend this authentic Greek restaurant, only steps from Grand Central!

Greek Salad was outstanding. The bread and hummus dip with olives and radishes at the beginning of the meal while we were looking at the menu was a nice treat. It's expensive, but they had a value menu for lunch at $29.95 per person that included soup/appetizer, lunch entrée and dessert. A good value compared with a la carte.

Always the freshest seafood, simply prepared. The chips are great and should be shared, before the meal. The octopus is the best anywhere, including Spain and Portugal.

The food was tasty, and the fish was properly cooked. The appetizers were extremely expensive, and everything seemed overpriced for what it was. The waiters were a little distant and not particularly helpful. Overall, I would not return because there are better places that cost less, and some a lot less.

I’m torn about writing this review! The reason is that the food was good, the service was good, but we were seated at a table outside in the back where odd stuff(chairs, empty baskets, broken pots etc...) were placed. Also the table was sooooo small that there was almost no place to set our dishes that even the waiter commented about it. He started putting dishes on top of cups and things to the point that he said what if he was bringing things one at a time like taking the bread away and bringing it back when we needed it and take our water glasses away and bring us water when we were thirsty! Sooooo disappointing especially since we were celebrating our anniversary and had said so! I have to add that inside the restaurant there were about half of the tables that were empty from the time we arrived until we left, that were bigger and we could have been seated there. I understand that restaurants have to make money and use the space accordingly but the couples that go there pay the same prices as parties of 3 and more so they should have the same treatment ( tablewise and privacy) as the others. I don’t think I would recommend this restaurant for couples! It’s not worth the money you pay for the way you’re treated!
