Avola Kitchen + Bar
My partner and I can for a later reservation on Friday for Valentine’s Day. I had be very interested in trying Avila for quite awhile as I am an industry professional and love trying different and eclectic restaurants when I get a night off from one of my own restaurants. When we came in the entire place was packed. The music playing in the corner was a little loud but tasteful. We stood at the host stand for a few minute. No big deal. We were told our table would be ready shortly and to grab a seat at the bar and grab a cocktail. We then walked over to this gorgeous bar that was perfectly dim, which I love. At the bar getting service wasn’t the easiest. An older gentleman greeted us and then walked away. It was about 5 minutes before a woman came over and asked if we had gotten drinks we told her no. She then said what I hate servers or bartenders saying... “What do you want?”
The hairs on my neck stood up but it was a busy night so I understand. We then ordered two of the Bourbon, Elderflower, Ginger and Lemon cocktails. I was less than impressed by the cocktails she crafted for us. They where lacking in every flavor but the bourbon. But we love our bourbon so we got them down. As we were starting our cocktails the table was then ready. I believe the manager brought us over and told us we could transfer our cocktail which is think a great hospitality point. However we put a cash tip up on the bar and let the lady bartender know to transfer them and she once again did something that less than impressed me, she insisted on closing us out with her, even with a cash tip. Once we made it to our table our server, though I didn’t quite catch her name did a phenomenal job! Her bottle service was exceptional. The wine selection was amazing. And every bite of food was delicious. If I was to come back to Avola I would definitely recommend a table over the bar experience, which saddens me as it has “bar” in the name. But all in all it was a great date night! 2 thumbs way up!
Really wanted to love this place but it just didn’t hit the mark. Food is very good, but not worth the price. Tables are jammed into a small dining space. You could hardly walk between tables and had no privacy for conversation. Service was incredibly slow although it was a full house the night we went. Dinner and drinks came out to about $100 per person before tip. If I’m going to spend that kind of money, I’m going to go into the city.
Noise does not mean energetic. Noise is a musician who was probably good but who started too early in a restaurant made up of all hard surfaces.
Great atmosphere! Great service! Delicious food!
I’d definitely recommend trying it out! It won’t disappoint.
We go to Avola regularly; everything is excellent. There's never been a disappointment. Food is superb. Craft cocktails are amazing. For cocktails, our group had the white Cosmo, the Winter Wonderland, the Paloma, the Figgin Delish, and the Valencia. This visit we brought friends who had never been there. They concurred that it was an excellent experience, and they want to go back.
Don’t think there will be a return trip. Went for a Friday lunch. Server was ok. Restaurant was basically empty. Food took FOREVER. Tasted fine. Just fine. But was WAY WAY WAY to expensive for what it was. Simply not good enough for the prices.
Bottom line is with our Birthday Pak coupon, it was a reasonable deal. The food was above average, but not outstanding. The quantity of food per plate was outstanding, but the taste was just average. My meatballs were served just lukewarm and my wife's stew was too hot to eat for 15 minutes. The setting is quite nice and large barrier between the bar and eating area to cut down the noise. They will only honor happy hour prices on the bar side of the restaurant, so don't expect to get any breaks on the tableside. The service was very good and polite.
Food is way over priced. For what we paid to have pasta, we could have gone to Capital Grill for an awesome experience. Nice place, nice bar, good drinks. They need to switch from trying to be a restaurant and focus on being a bar with live music and stay open beyond 10pm. Food was the low point of the evening and $267 for 4 people who had Italian pasta is crazy.
Service was indifferent despite it not being busy. I had a chicken sandwich, which was composed of a breaded and fried chicken breast, grilled broccolini, a grilled hot pepper, and some sort of oddly-flavored cheese. The sandwich was accompanied by chunks of fried potatoes liberally dusted with hot pepper. The dominant flavor was heat. Nothing else. I’ve given this place a number of tries—several happy hours, a dinner, and a lunch. It’s too loud, and the food is not memorable. Just overly seasoned with cayenne. I’m done.
This was our first visit to Avola Kitchen. We used a living social vouched so the cost was inexpensive. Our appetizer - Tartare, our Caesar salad and our entrees were all good. I had the short rib dish and my wife had the Bolognese pasta.
Such a great value - special Christmas Eve prime rib dinner. Thank you Anthony.
Service was acceptable - it was lunch hour... so not the A staff. The food was amazing - staff accommodated special requests. The music was a little loud for how quiet the restaurant was, but the place was clean, decor was super edgy - we enjoyed our meal. Thanks - we will be back for sure. JMG
Tried Avola as had never been there. It is OK but for the prices, I would not return. The food is adequate but not great and most items are in the $20-30 range - for those prices, would expect more. My companions agree. I got the potato gnocchi -- moderate portion size but was good. My companions ordered and shared several of the appetizers and salads - there feedback was that all were OK but nothing that they would come back for.
Avola was outstanding. I got the Branzino which was perfectly prepared. Others said the ribs and the Rigatoni and Meatballs were excellent. Service was delightful and we also sat at the bar for a bit which had an excellent vibe and good service. The mussels could've used a little more something but were nice and tender. The cannoli was the only thing lacking. very bland and not sweet.
This was our second visit!! Would recommend for sure.
Our food was wonderful but the portions were extremely small !! our appetizer was a shrimp appetizer and was wonderful but very small !! our dinner portions were extremely small and cost a lot !!
Not my first time here, but brought new friends along with me for this visit. Although they agreed with me the cocktails were unique and delicious, and the food outstanding, they spent the whole meal joking about the table size. It is true, the tables for two are the same size as the tables for four. Good thing we didn't all order pizza, as we were booted from using the table next to us to place our menus and empty glasses somewhere. Service on this particular Saturday night was less than adequate, but it will not stop me from coming back in the near future. Focus on the food and the modern ambiance, and you will enjoy your time here.
Delicious food, great atmosphere & service!
We tried Avola with a groupon. The food was good, just not very inspired to our liking. The flavors could be more potent and contrasting flavors to add dimension to the dishes I had the salmon and my husband had the pasta. The salmon was medium rare and excellent, but the rest of the items in the dish were minimal and not flavorful. His pasta was good, but the sauce lacked umph.
Food was average and a little over priced. Service was ok. We went because we had a coupon but we didn’t like it enough to go back.
AVOLA is becoming one of our most favorite restaurants. We enjoy sitting in the upbeat bar area where Steve and Kimberly took good care of us on Monday evening. Steve managed to keep us quite happy with cocktails and wine requests. And Steve was kind to put up with a lot of our table conversation.
We all enjoyed the new, innovative menu with many choices to appeal to just about any diner. I was especially pleased to see that the decadent dessert donuts were still available!
The pottery dishes and plates make for such a welcoming meal as well as the new glassware, especially for drinks 'on the rocks'. And we very much appreciate you supporting local vendors in our area.
We are looking forward to our next visit to Avola when we can taste the various new small plates and entrees... and enjoy the decadent dessert donuts again!
Thank you Anthony and Stephen and your Chef and staff for a delightful break from cooking at home.
Enjoyable good food.... we will be back
Arrived at a local Hotel and asked for a close place to eat. They suggested Avola Kitchen and I found them on Open Table. Made the reservation which was confirmed by Open Table. We arrived 15 min early to have a drink but were informed they were closed. We confirmed the reservation with the hostess, however, she refused to seat us and asked us to leave.
Great new menu with lots more options, just put in place 11/2. Kept some past favorites and added what looks like some new ones! Unbelievable craft cocktails (Steve is one of the most creative bartenders we have ever encountered). Oh, and by the way the ricotta donuts for desert should not be missed. Highly recommend
An enjoyable evening
My spouse and I had a lovely meal combining a number of sharable plates. We had the calamari and the octopus which were both very fresh and delicious. My only wish would have been for more of the octopus and less of the white beans on that plate. Caesar salad was crisp and the dressing perfect. The cauliflower was flavorful, but not what we had expected and would probably not order it again. The flourless chocolate cake is to die for, especially if you're a chocoholic like me - sinfully delicious! Service was excellent - attentive, but not intrusive. It wasn't a particularly busy night so it wasn't too noisy. There is a lot of tile and hard surfaces - nothing sound absorbent - so the sound bounces a lot. I imagine that on a busier night it might be hard to converse. We had a cocktail (delicious bourbon Manhattans) and a glass of wine each, ending the experience with an espresso and cappuccino. The total bill before tip was $120 which felt a bit pricey for what we had. We will definitely go back and maybe try to hit the more affordable happy hour. Overall it is a great addition to the local restaurant scene.
This is a regular spot for brunch. I’m surprised it’s on the quiet side. Maybe people do not realize yet how good the food is. The stuffed French toast and salmon are fantastic. Service is friendly and efficient as well.
I enjoyed the visit. I think the menu is too limited and the food a little high in price. I definitely think the drinks are too expensive.
Loved their wine down night everything was paired so well and we got to try some great plates also!
The Waite staff did an outstanding job. Very friendly and exceptionally accommodating.
Great pizza and happy hr specials!
Delicious gourmet food! Beautiful space and excellent service!
We arrived at 6:10 and our food arrived at 7:40. It took an extremely long time and it was just okay. The mussel appetizer was good but our entrees were not great. It wasn’t busy.
I had a really disappointing meal there with my boyfriend. The burrata and fig ap was great but it went downhill from there. My boyfriend had the bolognese which had too much thyme or some spice in it that overpowered the whole dish. I had the cioppino but requested no scallops or mussels and sub more clams and shrimp. When the manager brought over the dish there were no clams in it and a ton of calamari. I told him, I dont think there is supposed to be calamari in this dish..he said..yes there is but if you arent happy I can get you something else. I told him no as I didnt want to have to wait for another meal. The waiter came by and also said something similar but i told him to check the menu. When he came he apologized since he saw I was right and the chef made the meal wrong. He was kind enough to say we wouldnt have to pay for my dinner since I only ate half of it and also didnt charge for my cappuccino. the manager never came back to apologize that he was wrong about the meal and sorry it was made incorrectly.
Typically I dont even rate restaurants but after this dinner I felt it was warranted. The restaurant had potential..live music and nice atmosphere but if it werent for the waiter we may have just walked out of there.
Went for dinner Saturday night with another couple. Live music in the bar area was a nice touch. Salad portions were huge however 2 people at our table ordered the special (hangar steak) and portion was pretty small. Overall we enjoyed ourselves very much
Nice, new restaurant. My wife visited for an early dinner so the restaurant was mostly empty with the exception of the bar. The food and service were fine.
Lunch hour on a Thursday meant we had the whole place to ourselves. What a wonderful way to spend a few hours catching up with a friend we hadn’t seen in years. Our waiter was excellent and respectful of our desire to take it slowly. The food here is delicious. While the menu is limited, I’ve always found that to mean greater consistency in the quality of the food. The outside appearance makes the interior atmosphere a surprise. Very contemporary and inviting. Booths in bar area are elevated, so watch that first step when leaving the booth. Outdoor dining on a prior occasion was marred by spotted lantern flies, but we managed to enjoy the meal in spite of it. I look forward to enjoying this restaurant in many more occasions. Job well done!
Very disappointed. Ordered a simple Caesar salad. Way overpriced. Hardly any dressing (just kind of watery), maybe 3 croutons and a piece of grilled salmon on top which completely wilted the lettuce. Not good.
The grilled octopus and Pizza were delicious
Very good for this type of restaurant
Personable but unobtrusive service made an ideal setting for a business lunch.
