We have dined at Avli (Milwaukee) on several occasions and enjoyed it very much. But, this was the poorest experience. It started with the hostess who sat us at the table. She was unfriendly, unhumorous, and even bit hostile. We were put so aback, that we considered leaving. My wife had to fight the urge to leave. We stayed but it did put a damper on the evening. The service thereafter was excellent and as always, so was the food. We sat outside because the inside is so over air conditioned that we would have froze. The problem with the outside is that they were grilling rotisserie chicken. Their outdoor BBQ concept seemed interesting, except we sat for 1 hour in smoky haze. The smoke got everywhere and lingered under the awning we were under. I know several other patrons moved their table. This is not a good idea. I would like to return, but not under the current circumstances.

Booked our reservation for 2 people 10 days in advance for 6:30pm on a Friday, we were seated downstairs in the basement when there were tables available upstairs. We were seated at a 4 top in the middle of the room which had a very bad vibe, especially because it was pretty empty. I asked to be moved to a corner table which was a 2 top and they said it was reserved. They then separated our table to make it a 2 top and less awkward. We ordered 4 starters which came relatively quickly, we both got the watermelon featured cocktail which didn’t taste like anything. About 30 minutes in we ordered our mains (4 items). I then ordered a glass of Sauvignon blanc and it was the worst wine I’ve ever tasted, it clearly had been from a bottle that was opened days earlier. I ordered a new cocktail immediately, they did not comp the wine despite a full glass sitting on the table. The kalamari came about 20 minutes after we ordered. We then waited over an hour and 15 minutes for the rest of our food. 50 minutes in we asked if they could make it to-go because the basement was extremely loud, I had to shout for my friend to hear me 2 feet away. During those 50 minutes no one checked on us despite so many servers milling about. The servers that did bring our starters and kalamari did not know the table numbers and walked around aimlessly with our food until they found us. There was a huge glass break at the bar when we first sat and the ground was still wet when we left, there was a sign out however. We left as soon as we had our to-go and when we came upstairs there were plenty of open seats at tables and at the bar which we would’ve much preferred over the dark, loud basement. Overall bad experience.

Two of us went during their Happy Hour - the food and drinks were great (though we wish that the garlic "dip" that came with the zucc and eggplant chips was more of a dip than dry crumbles), the service was friendly and attentive, and we love their outdoor patio!
