Avery serves modern California-influenced food with Asian inflections in a lively, relaxed setting. The seasonally changing menu is bright, bold, and seafood-dominant while the beverage menu is eclectic, focusing largely on sake and Champagne.

Avery is led by Chef/Owner Rodney Wages who came up at some of the country's most respected kitchens, including The French Laundry, Menu, Atelier Crenn, and Saison. He brings his unique style of cooking to Avery. You will see him in the kitchen every night!

We had a wonderful dinner at Avery. The restaurant is beautiful and elegant in a restrained way. Our waiter established a pleasant relationship. The meal was well paced.
In reviewing the food, we felt some dishes were overly complicated. The multiple flavors lessened the taste rather than complemented the dish.
Our favorite dishes were the opening soup, the oysters and the tortellini en brodo.
In reflection, we appreciated our experience but likely would not spend $600 on a return visit.

First, let me give some context that I've been fortunate to have eaten at other high-end, prix fixe restaurants in SF: Saison, Omakase, Kusakabe, Michael Mina, Atelier Crenn, Robin, etc.  I enjoy food and dining and don't mind spending money for an awesome experience.  Unfortunately, this was anything but, and I CANNOT RECOMMEND AVERY TO ANYONE.

I like the neighborhood (State Bird and the Progress are right across the street) and knew I wasn't going downtown, but the space itself is dark and odd feeling.  More than anything it feels really unfinished (and not purposefully so). We sat upstairs which is "cozy", but the lighting is super strange and uneven even across a single table. If I had to sit downstairs it feels like an empty-ish garage/studio space. There's also only a single restroom for the staff and guests.  Both myself and others in my party were waiting for staff to come out of the bathroom during the meal.  Never been to high end a restaurant like that before...

The service was super spotty.  Part of my party was seated before me and when we arrived (right on time for our reservation), it took nearly 15 minutes for someone to come over and offer us any more than water.  It's a small restaurant with a large number of staff and a handful of tables so this seemed unnecessary.  throughout the evening I had to constantly flag someone down when I wanted a refill and they never came by to offer more wine on their own.  It's almost like the staff disappeared between courses.  Our dinner also lasted nearly 2.5 hours, which while not necessarily unusual for a tasting menu was very annoying as I let them know I needed to leave within 2:00 to make a concert.  They said no problem, but then proceed to bring out the courses at a somewhat glacial pace.

Once we sat down and were offered drinks, the server didn't explain how the menu worked - somewhat odd considering there are only three options for a glass of wine ($18 / $24 / $55) with no details about what type, etc

Been to many michelin star restaurants, as Avery will clearly become during the next cycle, and this one falls quite short. I found the dishes underwhelming and overpriced. Presentation was good but not great. Ingredients were fresh and delicious, but not epic. Ambiance and service were perfectly fine, but not necessarily what you'd expect from a restaurant of this caliber. Perhaps it's still new and so the staff is ramping. Hopefully the team will work out the menu and optimize the experience over time.

We had a very great dining experience. All the dishes were tasty and innovative. I would have given a five star if the service had been better. First I made a request about the table when I reserved through opentable. Obviously no one paid any attention and I had to highlight my request to the receptionist upon arrival at the table. Further our server came across as abrupt and not friendly during the entire time. It was quite disappointing as both my friend and I were very impressed with the food and the ambiance.

We had a Delicious prix fixe meal with sake pairing the staff was very attentive and we learned so much about the different types of wine and sake in the pairings. Wonderful experience.

Be prepared for the unmarked entrance and trust the numeric address. Good table separation but each table appeared itself to be very intimate. Wine list is very limited -- so understand you are there for the Sake or Champagne. We had not one bit of disappointment with any of the 9 courses. In fact, just when you think you had the best course -- it gets better. No coffee service at the end. We ate on a night that was not busy -- the chefs were the greeters, delivery and clearing staff. Chef Rodney and Chef Klaus are very different personalities but both charming, energetic and conversant.

From the moment you walk into the cool, modern setting, you realize you are in for a unique and special experience. Thoughtful and impeccable service. Wide variety of skillfully and artistically prepared food. Almost too much food - skip prior lunch. Will definitely go again.

Things I liked about Avery: unassuming front right on Lower Fillmore that is easy to walk past since there is no sign; thoughtful interior; and really nice touches such as the handwritten menu and beautifully designed glasses and plates on which the food is served.

The food was also really nice. We had the tasting menu and there is a great dish there called Coast with delicious pork belly. Not a lot of bottles of wine prices lower than $100 on the wine list.

Things that were not great: The service is not where it needs to be for a meal that was $370 for two people who did not drink wine. At that price point there were just too many noticeable mistakes: my coffee was served to the wrong table, our table was missing a candle which we had to point out, we had to ask for a bottle of water twice before the waiter got it, we were served with other than the open hand several times. Again, all of this would have been fine at a lower price point. At $370, the air starts to thin out and you start noticing small mistakes which compound. Also, there is a baby cam pointed towards the patrons on the top floor which really does not set a great mood.

So there is my feedback. I wish Avery well. And hope to have an excuse to try it again in the future.

My wife and I went for our 10 year anniversary and were totally blown away. The food was exceptional and the fact the Executive Chef sat us and the Sous Chef ran our courses to the table were some of the nice touches we weren’t expecting. The saki selection is amazing and I would go back in a heartbeat.

I found Avery while looking for a restaurant in which to celebrate my wife's birthday. It was relatively close to the hotel we booked, which was a plus but what convinced me to book Avery was its specializing in sake and champagne pairings with the tasting menu. My wife and I love sparkling wine and were especially excited about experiencing multiple champagnes from small producers. We were not disappointed and both thought that the somm did a good job of matching each pour with the corresponding dish. We are also keen on trying up and coming chefs as you never know if you might end up having the next Keller cook for you. Rodney Wages and his crew did a wonderful job! Food was creative, flavorful and fun (body shots with caviar and Fred)! Overall a great experience making for a good birthday celebration.

Wonderful dining experience at Avery. Each course of the tasting menu was delicious. Some of the sauces were absolutely stupendous. One was so good that one of my dining companions, after soaking u every drop from a plate, expressed that he would “bathe in it”. And the chef had to make a vegetarian compliment to the evening’s meal. Well done. The staff is attentive without being intrusive. Nothing was rushed. And they were pleasant to to engage with. Would recommend to anyone who wants a truly special meal.

We had an excellent meal at Avery. The food was excellent in preparation and presentation and the service was friendly and professional. My wife has a few food sensitivities and they did an great job accommodating that, even creating a new dessert that we were the first to try (it was delicious!). While not cheap, I think the prixe-fixe price of $130 is a solid value within the range of such options in SF. I did the sake pairing and the details provided on each sake was highly appreciated by me.

I've dined at Avery a few times now, and Chef Rodney never disappoints. It's wonderful to have a dining destination with a tasting menu experience of this caliber so close to home. Looking forward to celebrating many more special occasions at Avery!
