We had a very great dining experience. All the dishes were tasty and innovative. I would have given a five star if the service had been better. First I made a request about the table when I reserved through opentable. Obviously no one paid any attention and I had to highlight my request to the receptionist upon arrival at the table. Further our server came across as abrupt and not friendly during the entire time. It was quite disappointing as both my friend and I were very impressed with the food and the ambiance.
We had a Delicious prix fixe meal with sake pairing the staff was very attentive and we learned so much about the different types of wine and sake in the pairings. Wonderful experience.
Totally worth the splurge, every course was a hit...and the sake pairings were spot on
Be prepared for the unmarked entrance and trust the numeric address. Good table separation but each table appeared itself to be very intimate. Wine list is very limited -- so understand you are there for the Sake or Champagne. We had not one bit of disappointment with any of the 9 courses. In fact, just when you think you had the best course -- it gets better. No coffee service at the end. We ate on a night that was not busy -- the chefs were the greeters, delivery and clearing staff. Chef Rodney and Chef Klaus are very different personalities but both charming, energetic and conversant.
Great and innovative food!! Great experience! It deserve at least 2 Michelin stars!!
From the moment you walk into the cool, modern setting, you realize you are in for a unique and special experience. Thoughtful and impeccable service. Wide variety of skillfully and artistically prepared food. Almost too much food - skip prior lunch. Will definitely go again.
The food is good, but not worth the money.
Amazing food and service. Good value when all considered and was full upon leaving. Impressive artistry and culinary skills exhibited by chef with a few n and unique sake and champagne pairing. Looking forward to returning soon.
Food delicious. Very quiet. Not much ambiance. Wine list very expensive.
Food was boldly presented, flavors creative, and service top notch! Highly recommend especially to foodies. This place will get stars.
Things I liked about Avery: unassuming front right on Lower Fillmore that is easy to walk past since there is no sign; thoughtful interior; and really nice touches such as the handwritten menu and beautifully designed glasses and plates on which the food is served.
The food was also really nice. We had the tasting menu and there is a great dish there called Coast with delicious pork belly. Not a lot of bottles of wine prices lower than $100 on the wine list.
Things that were not great: The service is not where it needs to be for a meal that was $370 for two people who did not drink wine. At that price point there were just too many noticeable mistakes: my coffee was served to the wrong table, our table was missing a candle which we had to point out, we had to ask for a bottle of water twice before the waiter got it, we were served with other than the open hand several times. Again, all of this would have been fine at a lower price point. At $370, the air starts to thin out and you start noticing small mistakes which compound. Also, there is a baby cam pointed towards the patrons on the top floor which really does not set a great mood.
So there is my feedback. I wish Avery well. And hope to have an excuse to try it again in the future.
My wife and I went for our 10 year anniversary and were totally blown away. The food was exceptional and the fact the Executive Chef sat us and the Sous Chef ran our courses to the table were some of the nice touches we weren’t expecting. The saki selection is amazing and I would go back in a heartbeat.
I found Avery while looking for a restaurant in which to celebrate my wife's birthday. It was relatively close to the hotel we booked, which was a plus but what convinced me to book Avery was its specializing in sake and champagne pairings with the tasting menu. My wife and I love sparkling wine and were especially excited about experiencing multiple champagnes from small producers. We were not disappointed and both thought that the somm did a good job of matching each pour with the corresponding dish. We are also keen on trying up and coming chefs as you never know if you might end up having the next Keller cook for you. Rodney Wages and his crew did a wonderful job! Food was creative, flavorful and fun (body shots with caviar and Fred)! Overall a great experience making for a good birthday celebration.
Wonderful dining experience at Avery. Each course of the tasting menu was delicious. Some of the sauces were absolutely stupendous. One was so good that one of my dining companions, after soaking u every drop from a plate, expressed that he would “bathe in it”. And the chef had to make a vegetarian compliment to the evening’s meal. Well done. The staff is attentive without being intrusive. Nothing was rushed. And they were pleasant to to engage with. Would recommend to anyone who wants a truly special meal.
Dining at Avery was a pleasant surprise. Not that I had low expectations, but the service, presentation and flow of the evening was very much ideal and outstanding.
It was an amazing experience! We enjoyed the tasting menu and the sake pairing. We learned alot about Sake and the differences in the types. The best Sake we have experienced. Very engaging food and everything was delicious!
The vibe here was amazing—such a nice departure from the communal table scene! The service was impeccable & food some of best I’ve had in SF in the last year. Hope this place thrives because it was 5-star!
Underrated food from a decorated chef. Cozy, chic atmosphere. Get here!
We had an excellent meal at Avery. The food was excellent in preparation and presentation and the service was friendly and professional. My wife has a few food sensitivities and they did an great job accommodating that, even creating a new dessert that we were the first to try (it was delicious!). While not cheap, I think the prixe-fixe price of $130 is a solid value within the range of such options in SF. I did the sake pairing and the details provided on each sake was highly appreciated by me.
Pricey, but worth every penny! Had a great time at Avery and highly recommend it for its high quality of food, service and drinks.
Not inexpensive but an outstanding meal for the money
I've dined at Avery a few times now, and Chef Rodney never disappoints. It's wonderful to have a dining destination with a tasting menu experience of this caliber so close to home. Looking forward to celebrating many more special occasions at Avery!
