Avenue Kitchen - Permanently Closed Ratings and Reviews
Waited in empty entry way for 12 mins before being acknowledged by a male manager (or any staff member for that matter). Phone was ringing incessantly, all lines blinking, desk completely absent and clearly no concern to answer. Finally shown to table (with a reservation made weeks previous). Took 11 mins to be greeted. Server clearly had no aquaintance of the menu, even to go so far as to force us to point out and explain ingredients and menu items that he was unfamilliar with. Appetizers arrived before drinks, before napkins, before silverware. We had to awkwardly flag down another employee to request sugar for tea, S&P, and eating utensils, as the necessities were noticed. Server reminded us mutliple times that he "hasnt worked here in a while " and that "the menu has changed, I guess". The food was wonderful, but the image I am left with is of a restaurant that was completely unprepared, understaffed, and inexperienced. Both My husband and I are in the industry- managing restaurants in center city Philadelphia, and the solutions here were completely manageable with proper staffing and preparation.
Place was not busy and we waited about 30 minutes to have our order taken. My French toast was dry, almost burnt with barely and filling as it stated. The toast for the omelette wasn't brought to the table till the eggs got cold and we had to ask for another table setting. Was very disappointed as we came in to celebrate Mother's Day. Don't know if I'd want to come back.
Excellent food and very attractive setting- open, big bar, lots of seating for groups as well as singles and doubles. Nice comfortable booths. The evening we were there, several large groups were also present creating demands on the servers resulting in a slower pace than desired. I had the Tuna which was outstanding. My partner had the Short Ribs which were very good. Nice selection of beer and wine.
Put us in bar area during Kentucky Derby - server was watching race, 20 minutes for drinks. Told us 4x, sorry gonna make it up to you - comped 1st round. The make up never came walked to bar for drink refills, told its very busy because of graduation . Not enough staff to cover service, 2nd bad service experience.
Serve breakfast all day. Bacon was excellent and toast was well above normal. Nice sized serving of eggs and fried potatoes. Colleague had fish tacos that were fresh and full with nice size serving of French fries. A bit pricey at $21 apiece with 18% tip and tax but it was good.
Pleasantly surprised by the beautiful atmosphere. They have a lively bar and open space that makes the place lively and audible. Menu had many interesting and healthy choices and was delicious. The chef takes a while to prepare things, but it was worth the extra long wait.
The first time I visited Avenue Kitchen was a few months ago. There were four of us and we ordered from the Happy Hour menu...half-price drinks and half-price appetizers an. It was very good. But this past Saturday, we ordered off the regular menu and I had the Caesar Salad with Salmon. I was totally disappointed. The salad leaves were so tiny, and there were TONS of croutons, but worse than that, the very small piece of salmon had a thick hard crust on the top, definitely over-cooked. I would never order it there again, but will go to the places I know that serve an excellent Caesar salad with a large piece of perfectly grilled salmon. My friend had the Caesar with shrimp with the same load of crutons and limp looking romaine. I'll stick to Happy Hour at this place, if anything.
As others have noted, the service is very, very slow. We had a reservation but it was about 10 minutes before a host (who may have also been the bartender) came out to the front. The restaurant (at lunchtime on a Saturday) was pretty empty. It took about 5 more minutes for a waitress to come by. She took a drink order, and the drinks were brought out to us, but took another 15 minutes for her to come back to take the order. It then took almost an hour to get our food (and we did not order appetizers). We were a party of 6, so maybe with fewer people it would be shorter? The food was very, very good. Everyone said they loved the food.
Avenue Kitchen fits right into the popular food trend of American food with a twist. Unique ingredients, classic sandwiches remixed, great cocktails and a variety of options all highlight a fun menu. Would recommend to anyone in with an open mind about classic dishes. The only downside was slow and awkward service. Not enough to effect my mood about the night but enough that I took notice.
3 major complaints: had to switch tables due to reservation issue, my food came out 30 minutes earlier than my friend's food due to poor service, and then was charged more than the menu price for a bloody mary as according to waiter "alcohol is not included in the menu price of a bloody mary it only includes mix, vodka is extra". Would not recommend.
We were very disappointed with our dinner at Avenue Kitchen. The service was very slow (there was a long time in between check-ins from our waitress). We also never received one of our appetizers yet it appeared on our bill. In terms of ambiance, the decor is very good but we felt the lights should have been dimmed a bit for evening dining. It's a shame because this could be a great spot but the service and ambiance needs a lot of work!
I went here last week and service and food was amazing. I brought my partner here and I will be honest the service was just terrible. There was no attentiveness, we had our drinks empty for a while until we finally just asked for the check. We would have had a few more cocktails if we had been asked. It was not just us there was customers actually getting up from their tables to get cocktail service. The steak I ask for it to be cooked medium and it was well done. We had waited a while to get the food and was so hungry I didn't want yo send it back. Needless to say I may just get takeout next time if I even choose to come back. I was actually referred by a client of mine and they were mortified by the experience I had.
We had reservations for 8:30 but no one was up front so we waited for a while until my boyfriend went to the bar and asked to be seated. When the guy came over he said they were closing soon so we needed to be quick, why have 830 reservations available when you close soon? He tried to very quickly take our drink orders when I hadn't even looked at the menu yet, I said we should leave because if he was closing soon I didn't want to intrude. He assured us that we weren't and he just wanted to get the kitchen staff out early. We ordered and he repeated the order back several times but forgot the cheese on the burger when it came. I can overlook that even though I felt uncomfortable for being there despite another family eating there as well. We told him we were there for valentines day because my boyfriends birthday is on Valentine's so we do Valentine's the day before instead. He said he had something for us and brought us a dessert, which he then charged us for! We didn't ask for the dessert and assumed it was free! Won't come back
Avenue Kitchen was a pretty restaurant and quiet when we were there on a Sunday around 6:30pm. We wanted to order the scallops but their seafood delivery didn't happen that day so we ordered some sandwiches instead. They were tasty but messy and it was hard to eat them with your hands. I had a spicy chicken with avocado and it was good but the chicken was a bit over cooked. I didn't try the dinners so I don't know if they were worthy of 4 stars. I would return though at another time. Lovely setting!!
We were meeting neither party was from the area. This was a great find for us. Good food, great range of the menu - half of us had late or second breakfast, accommodating to kids, coffee was good. Very easy to find, easy parking. The blueberry pancakes were a hit and they make a fine simple pizza with house made sauce and cheese.
