Servers who listen when you order and advise specifics, servers who stand still and wait for an answer and avoids the fly-by ask/answer by themselves, a server who remembers your leftovers and delivers them to your table in less than 12 minutes, servers who “get it” (understand that food gets cold and honor your wishes especially when you carefully and logically explained at the time you’ve ordered), those are the servers I am used to. That’s why I go back to the same places. Too bad none of them had my table on Sunday.
We love the food at Avenue but during our last visit the service was abysmal. We inquired. Our waitress told us there was a private party in the restaurant and that their orders had slowed the kitchen down. We looked around and nobody had been served anything. In a professional restaurant, private parties are given off-hours slots so the kitchen can devote its full attention to the group. The chef shouldn't ignore a whole dining room of regular customers while keeping private parties happy.
Enjoyed this restaurant for brunch on mother's day. Our party of three had a couple of cocktails and ate well. Service was attentive but not over the top. Definitely plan to dine here again!
Great breakfast! Loved the unique savory bread pudding.
Food was very good but the service was very slow. Waiter worked hard and did the best they could but too many customers for too few waiters.
They have the best trout in town! My husband's barramundi was also excellent.
Great food...as always. Appreciated that they did not offer the oysters as planned as they were not up to the chef's standards.
Every morsel was perfection! Fruit, potatoes, chicken, biscuits, gravy, eggs. Ant the breakfast granola parfait was a hit! A+ on presentation and temperature. Even the blueberries and strawberries were scrumptious! This is a difficult dining experience to top. Thanks. We needed that!
Great spot to meet friends. Clayton offers many options but thus was a great choice. New to all of us and we were all pleased.
Avenue it’s a restaurant where the food is consistently good, the service is pleasant and helpful, and the noise level is bearable. We really enjoy going to this welcoming spot in Clayton.
Great food! This was a special menu for Easter! Perfect offerings for Spring. We’re hoping our choices are available again!
I love the menu and the prices are fair. The service is terrific. The food, unfortunately is very bland. I don't like lots of spicy things, but the was devoid of flavor. The sauces were fine. Everything needed a bit of salt, or herbs, or a tiny pepper or something. Sure of all of our dishes -- soup, the veggies, the filet and the sole. "The bread pudding was amazing!
It was great
The carrot flan with mushrooms is fantastic!
It’s a little expensive but the quality of food and service was in line so it made it worthwhile
Food was once again outstanding. Service was a bit slow at the beginning, but then picked up.
Avenue is one of my go to lunch spots. I was very disappointed in the food this visit. I had the quiche which was so salty I could barely eat it. Not what I am used to from this establishment which is usually one of my favorites.
Great service and delicious meal.
Avenue is usually spot on with their food and service. We eat breakfast/brunch here multiple times a month and have so for years. Unfortunately today the service was slow, items were forgotten and the food was just average and undercooked. It was busy but the lack of follow through on food and condiments was disappointing. We will of course be back. You can’t hit it out the park every time and we understand that.
Outstanding food and outstanding service.
We've had fine meals before, but our most recent encounter was rather disappointing. It was a Monday night and not crowded, yet it took >30 minutes to get our food after we had ordered (we only ordered entrees so there wasn't a reason to wait for appetizers, etc.). The food was also below our prior experiences, with a medium rare steak, for instance, cooked through until there wasn't a trace of pink in the center. We all were finished with our meals and sitting in front of empty plates for a while before anyone came to ask us abut dessert or offer us the check. Unsure what has changed, but it is unlikely we will be back.
Great food. But kitchen failed to cook one out of the six meals ordered resulting in a delay for that individual. Nice ambiance.
The overall experience was horrible. Beginning with the rude hostess who received us. The server took her time approaching the table and it took roughly 10-15 minutes to get our drinks. The food runner practicly slammed the plates onto the table. Our server never went back to get us refills. We had to flag her down a couple of times for other reasons. Overall the experience was underwhelming. I felt as if we were dismissed as soon as we walked in.
Upscale casual atmosphere, our server, Sam, was very friendly and knowledgeable. The food is fantastic, and the chef makes a point of checking in with every table to ensure customer satisfaction. I've never had carrot flan before, but it's delicious! I can't wait to order it again.
Amazing...! Chef, Brian Carr is a legend in the STL Culinary world...Menu/Food is totally solid with a special twist on American standards...Service is impeccable, Server Colin, was extremely knowledgeable about every aspect of the menu, evening specials and beverage/wine list. Chef Carr gave us a special visit to our table and showed/tasted some perfect wines to accompany our dinner choices. Five Stars!
I follow a specific macro diet and had asked if they had a nutritional menu before I went. They unfortunately didn’t, however I was put in touch with the chef who made a special meal just for me that met my dietary needs. The food was spectacular, wine was great, and the service wonderful! Was surprised it wasn’t more busy on a Friday night because it was so good! Will definitely be back!
Everything was fantastic!! Server was excellent ant the food was perfect!
A friend of mine is a frequent visitor and she loves it. I needed to meet a friend from out of town somewhere in between where he was staying and I lived. The Avenue proved the perfect spot. The food was very good but it was the atmosphere and staff that sent us over the moon. For a relaxed, low key and "smart" restaurant The Avenue has our vote.
We arrived for our table and got a blank stare from the hostess. Waited for 15 minutes and were seated at a table that was half filthy. They forgot to clean half the table and there were still dirty glasses on it. There were only place settings for two of us. We pointed this out and got up from the table to give them space to clean it. We waited. And waited. And waited. We eventually pointed this out to the hostess who then escorted us back to the table. The table had a spray bottle of cleaning solution on it. We never sat down. She just walked away. We couldn’t believe it.
Our visit to Avenue was the third restaurant in as many evenings. It is an unpretentious space with clean lines and uncluttered seating. Best short ribs! Hands down; nicely presented, tender and flavorful with fresh, crispy green beans and a crunchy-on-the outside, soft-on-the-inside potato cake. Crispy warm bread and a delightfully sweet-tart house-made lemonade rounded out the meal. Our server, Sam was attentive, and his assistant saw to it our water glasses were full and dirty plates were whisked away. In all honesty, Avenue was not my first choice for the evening, but I am glad we ended up there. Lots of kudos from the family on this choice.
Thanks for visiting us and for your nice comments. Wow, what attention to detail. We hope you come back soon. thanks, again.
Food and service much better than similar restaurants.
Food was outstanding. Chef came to table and advised on wine and was able to answer my question about if the fish was sustainability caught. Love Avenue.
What a fun place. Small tables for an intimate setting. We sat next to the fire on a cool March evening. Recommend the toasted beet salad or tomato soup as the appetizer and the duck confit casserole for the entree. Perfect for date night on the way to the theater.
Scott, Thanks for stopping in. We're very glad that you enjoyed our ambiance and your dinner. Yes, we're a convenient choice when you're on your way to theater or symphony.
Outstanding Puligny Montrachet....
Even though we had a reservation, we were seated next to the service station. We were told that the other more desirable tables were taken. We ordered iced tea and had to ask again for lemon. I had the smoked salmon salad and it contained flaked salmon and lot of lettuce with very tiny and scarce pea pods.
Hello, Thanks for visiting us and going to the trouble to comment. I'm sorry that you were unhappy with your salad. It's odd because you meant to have ordered a smoked salmon salad but we don't have that on our menu. Anyway, we regret the confusion, thank you again and hope that you'll come back soon.
It was enjoyable as always. Avenue is my favorite 'Go to' restaurant in the Clayton area.
There were a few new selections on the main menu. My friend and e I selected the Cassoulet. It was outstanding. A very hearty dish for a cold night.
Wonderful dinner with good friends who had never been to Avenue. They loved it and we will all be back.
An overall wonderful evening, good food, excellent service, even allowed to sample wines before selecting. I recommend without any reservation.
Always dependable and flavorful! We are always pleased when this is our choice. I don’t mean to sound boring; we’re very pleased with the selections and service here!
Great Valentine Day restaurant. Set menu had many choices for any preference. EVERY table was taken so the noise level was higher than normal. Slight mix-up with the kitchen but restaurant made up for issue. Tables were very close.....but Avenue wanted to accommodate as many people as possible. We did not feel rushed in any way. We will go again.
