Avanti Ratings and Reviews
I was shocked when I got the bill! Over $300.00 for dinner for two of us. After checking over the bill, I realized I was charged for an additional eight drinks@ $10.00 each. that we never received. Upon looking closer I realized I was also charged for two bottles of wine @$68.00 a bottle when in fact we only had ordered one bottle! After arriving we request a booth, which they seated us in, order drinks and were brought menus. Had a couple of drinks the waiter kept rushing us to order but we weren't ready to order so they took our menus. When we asked for them back a little later ,the waiter brought them and when we opened them up and NO MEMU inside!
A local favorite since 1974 for all the right reasons. Elegant yet comfortable atmosphere, old school service, and best of all, a unique menu consisting of mouthwatering Italian cuisine. I am a native of Phoenix, remember dining there since I was a kid, and the quality of food and service is truly "distinctive."
I started out with a Kettle One martini straight up to accompany the Osetra caviar (pricey, but worth every penny). My wife ordered the escargot - a item that's been on the menu for years - and loved every morsel. We shared the Cesar salad that was made from scratch, and for my entree, the owner recommended the pounded and lightly battered bone-in veal chop, and for good reason. It was crispy and fork tender with a unique blend of spices that reminded me of my favorite trattoria in Italy.
Avanti is a must try for those who appreciate truly authentic Italian cuisine in a relaxed yet elegant atmosphere that seems to be lost in today's local cookie-cutter establishments. To me, Avanti is the Italian version of Durants; a treasured Phoenix gem that makes you keep coming back for more.
Chef stepped in to recommend lunch option for me. Good suggestion. Very tasty. My friend had asked for chicken on his salad and got salmon. Despite the surprise, he liked it. We both liked the place despite the unusual service. It was nice to meet the chef. He was super friendly and eager to please.
Went based on the recommendation of a friend. We were a bit early for our reservation Friday night, yet we were promptly seated. The waitstaff, headed by our waiter, Andrew, were all outstanding throughout the evening. They were patient with the fact that we had a bit of a schedule, and were very accommodating to that. At the end of the meal, the owner walked us out to our cars, and couldn't have been more gracious. We will be back, and not infrequently.
Have been going to Avanti for years, and it's always good (classic Italian food, with pasta much better than any I've had in Italy!), but this time was particularly great--possibly because of refinements in the menu (the re-make of their classic Benito salad is wonderful) or because of the excellent Brunello di Montalcino Ruffino that accompanied the meal.
Avanti has been in the valley for over 40 years and although the decor is a bit outdated, it adds to the overall charm of the restaurant and honors it's well deserved long standing history. The service was absolute perfection and we loved meeting the owner and hearing his passion for his craft. The food is seriously outstanding, the pastas are hand-made and every meal at the table was fabulous. We will definitely be back!!
After reading wonderful reviews I wanted to take my Son here for dinner while I'm here visiting. I felt like I walked into an OLD 70's disco...VERY outdated look! The service was terrible for a restaurant that had only 4 other tables (of which seemed to be regular old timers) and we had 3 different people come to our table between Long periods of time. I ordered a prosecco to drink and they brought me an awful warm flat wine. I had the seafood risotto for dinner that had absolutely no taste and it was more like watered down rice...definitely NOT risotto. I honestly wanted to send my food back (as did my Son) but we really wanted to just vacate quickly so we didn't even bother (since no one even came to the table to ask how everything was!). VERY disappointed and I honestly don't understand the great reviews other than who knows what those people are used to eating!
I met the owner's daughter on a plane and she recommended Avanti. She gave me a little history about the restaurant and it sounded intriguing so my husband and I tried it the next evening. The food was wonderful, authentic Italian. We started with the fried calamari which fresh light and flavorful, my husband had the lobster special and I had the seafood stuffed sole. Both were wonderful and the price on the lobster was very reasonable. Can't wait to return!
We really enjoyed our dinner at Avanti's. The manager, bartender, server were all wrapped up in the same friendly man. Sergio, along with his trusty side-kick, were all the staff that we saw but they more than took care of us. There was a good selection of traditional Italian food. The ambiance was old school but fun, mirrors everywhere! Good seafood and a lobster special which was a bargain. I had the veal special which was wonderful. Good wine and delicious desert. It was a relaxed and not fussy atmosphere. We will go again.
Had excellent experience 2 years ago...returned to celebrate a special birthday with friends. Initial service was slow...it was "Restaurant Week" & although that was not the reason we chose this eatery; I was aware of it and had to ask to see the "special menu". The waiter seemed surprised (dismayed?) and asked, "Oh, you want the Restaurant Week menu?" & returned with only one copy for a table of four. (We have been to many restaurants during "Restaurant Week" and always found the special offerings included as an insert in each menu...it made me feel a bit odd having to ask for it). Also....the un-named Cabernet (admittedly only $30) was a VERY INEXPENSIVE bottle that retails for less than $7). Overall; a bit disappointing.
