Firstly, I want to commend Aux Bar for their service. My boyfriend and I had to change our reservation time a few times and they still accommodated our special requests. So bravo to the staff! Upon walking in, they were all so friendly. We ordered the duck wings and a couple of drinks to start. The wings were under the small plates section but let me tell you, they were not small at all. I was expecting tapas-sized portion but it was a hefty amount of food and it tasted great. We ordered steak frites and the beef stew. Both were nice, but to be honest I was so full from the wings that I didn’t get to really savor the beef stew. The steak was cooked nicely to medium rare, more so on the rare side, which is how we like it.
We came by quite late, at around 9:45, on a Saturday night so we were told that the place does turn into a bar with a DJ around 10:30-11:00. Visiting from out of town, we decided to stay after dinner and check out the scene. We’re very happy we did. The DJ was playing good rap/hip hop music with a sprinkle of pop songs here and there so that made for great dancing. Drinks were fairly cheap too!
Overall, my boyfriend and I had a great experience at Aux Bar and we already talked about coming back next time we visit Asheville!
The fried chicken was amazing. And the hush puppies were too notch. They didn’t even need the sauce that came with them. Stellar!!!! And don’t miss the vinegar pie.
Good food, liked the vibe, excellent service! The vinegar pie was disappointing... blah crust and zero custard.
Great local fare! I’ve been to Aux bar before and enjoyed again this time. Love that there are small plates to mix and match or entrees. I ordered a ruby salad and beef stew and loved them both. Service was friendly and excellent. Great spot downtown Asheville.
Great food and awesome service!
Despite the poor rating I am giving last Friday's experience, I would recommend Aux Bar to others. I have to believe it was just an off night? The service we received was really terrible, and I suspect it was a combination of both wait staff and kitchen issues. The cocktail I ordered was unavailable, though my martini was fine. Our meals arrived before all the drinks had been brought to the table, but my salad wasn't served until after my entree, and my friend never received the soup she ordered. The food that we did receive was delicious. Our server was ready to push us out the door; he never asked if we wanted another round of drinks and he assumed we didn't want dessert, which we did. There were no choices here, since only one of the two desserts was available. We had the vinegar pie, which I would describe as a fruit tart. I enjoyed the flavor, but it needed to be served heated, or at least at room temperature. I would expect better in the future.
Very disappointed in the food. We had read so many things about the chef and was very excited to try it. Was possibly one of the worst meals we have had in Asheville. Service was great. Had a genuinely nice young lady who was new and a very knowledgeable server who backed her up wait on us.
The pork rinds were great. The pimento cheese was a different color on the outside than when you got a scoop of it. The oysters - first one was great, second one was old fishy tasting, and the third was on the verge of being spoiled. The mignonette was great however.
The Demi- glacé on the steak was broken and tasted like burnt motor oil. The meat was good but gamey.
The best part of the meal was the fries. They were delicious.
The service was so wonderful and friendly. The food was off the hook!
Very disappointing. Dry, very overcooked duck wings with little meat and way too much cloying sweet potato coating; California fries too soggy to eat even though ordered crisp. Pork ribs with pimiento cheese not bad. Would not go back. Unfortunate.
It was a very rainy night so the restaurant was crowded with cold, wet, hungry people. The staff was amazing - they sorted everyone crowding the door area quickly and effectively. We had a reservation - recommended - and sat us quickly. The food is interesting bar and cafe food, not particularly memorable but made quickly and the ingredients were fresh. The fried options were a bit greasy but good. Not many GF items. The highlights were the staff - charming, gracious, interesting - and the cocktails. The house special Margarita was absolutely delicious and a generous pour. My date had a local IPA that was clean and hoppy with a lick of citrus - wonderful.
Great food. Great service. There were 8 of us. We got our food in a timely fashion. Service was on top of things and very courteous. Do if d was outstanding
The beverages, food and service were all outstanding. Phillip and the rest of the staff were all very attentive, professional and made us feel very welcome and anxious to make a return visit on our next trip to Asheville.
Food was served quickly, drinks were great, deals were great, and the service was impeccable. We went on a Sunday night and it was fantastic!
Good place, good food, good ambience. Would recommend,
Food was fair at best. Nothing special about this restaurant.
Great place and super service
We had large group- very accommodating! Excellent and friendly service.
Easily amazing food and all the 4-5 star reviews about that here will update you - the food is solid and excellent, so is service.
The downs were ultra hot indoors (for us), which made it difficult to finish everything. Worse however were the (four...yes four) bridal parties atmosphere smothering an otherwise sexy B-day date.
On walking out my lady pointed to the "we welcome bridal parties" sign and I realized we'd been punked. Gotta say that that the whole bridal / bro parties have now ruined the formerly nice / local AVL vibe (and being a local I can tell you locals mostly don't go downtown much anymore for this reason). Might've been a fluke, but I think Aux (and any AVL restaruants) should maybe set off a bridal / bro party area so normal people can hear themselves talk. And maybe drop the thermostat down a few degrees when its so hot...
This is one of our favorite restaurants in Asheville. This trip was a result of having taken a local foraging tour. A feature of the tour was that we could pick one of five local restaurants that would incorporate some of the items that we foraged into two our meal. Aux Bar added three of our ingredients into two small plates. The presentation was very nice and the dishes were delicious. Definitely keeping this restaurant on our list of favorites.
I cannot recommend this place enough. The service was amazing. Great staff, very informed of everything offered on the menu. Duck wings were amazing. Will definitely return.
Funky hip with killer cocktails and tasty small plates. Feels more like an in spot that isn’t just targeting tourist dollars. Service was attentive and knowledgable. We loved Fools Gold, a standout cocktail.
Amazing burger and my fav was pork rinds and pimento cheese!
Great food and cocktails, awesome atmosphere, friendly staff! We will be back!
Awesome atmosphere and service. Loved the music.
Great food with innovative southern offerings. Cocktails are also good; any place that offers bottle service for a 40-ounce King Cobra Malt Liquor has to be checked out.
It's much too hot inside on a summer day; server Phillip is the BEST; mushroom burger not good enough to have again; humus is very thin and interesting; burgers and fries always good
Sat outside. There were mosquitoes (probably because of the water feature), a homeless man singing and dancing and smoking cigarettes. The burgers were way overcooked, the fries too salty. Had been a big fan (local and go now and again), but likely won't go back, at least not for a while. The one good thing, was our server was very friendly and good!
I got the steak frites, it was alright. Kinda chewy. Fries are good.
first time in Asheville. Great food and service. loved the chill vibe
Restaurant was nearly empty. My partner ordered the fried chicken, I ordered the steak frites. The server brought the fried chicken 10 minutes before bringing my medium rare steak. So he nibbled at his chicken, while I continued to wait. When she did bring mine, there was no apology for it taking so long. Then of course he has to wait while I finished mine.
The restaurant was hot too - end of June and they had windows open and ceiling fans circulating the warm air. Go elsewhere, there’s tons of other restaurants in Asheville.
We had a wonderful time our server was great & still was the food!
Our meal was tasty, but not as good as it has been on prior visits. I find the quality uneven at times, and I also prefer this spot for lunch over dinner.
Food was way over salted. Couldn’t eat most of it.
We brought our teenage twins as we were on vacay. At first we weren’t sure what to order. We just asked questions as we were encouraged and had a delicious dinner.
First time here and enjoyed very much. Would return. Unassuming atmosphere with above board food quality and great service.
Awesome Burger. Great cocktails and beer. Really cool vibe. Like party-ish divey, but chill and groovy at the same time. Really casual atmosphere with upscale menu
Fun and fabulous!!! We enjoyed the food immensely and the DJ was rocking!! Brought us back to our yourh
Decent food, a little pricey.
It’s hard to identify the worst part of the experience: the lackluster food, the disappointing wine, the half-hearted service, the lack of ambiance, the disturbing art, or the cigarette smoke permeating the air. There are too many good restaurants in Asheville to return to this one.
Amazing food, amazing service, guy that was Busser, host and waiter was extraordinary!!
