Autre Monde Ratings and Reviews
Used to go there after they opened every week and the food was always amazing. I hadn't been there in a couple of years since we moved out of the area and unfortunately the quality of the food has gone down and the prices up. I rather go to the city to much better restaurants for that price. Hope they can one day match the quality with the price.
We had a group of seven and did the chef's tasting menu. Our past experience was good.
But the chef's menu was very overpriced and the food was not good.
Our server was great. The wine was good and we had a nice evening. However, the food was bad enough we won't go back.
I’ve been wanting to go here forever! It was worth the wait! My friends and I did the chefs tasting menu. We like to share food and this was even better as we had the opportunity to sample more than 10 dishes off the regular and seasonal menu plus a few extras the chef was trying and multiple desserts! I Loved all but one dish and it was good, just not as good as the others. We sat on the lovely patio and we had excellent service! I’ll be eager to return!
Special shout out about the seasonal items! Our favorites all involved squash!
I was pretty excited to visit Autre Monde, but for what I paid, I have to say I was not bowled over. The new Autumn winter-squash-based menu items were ok (we tried the Harvest Moon cocktail... very sweet and too heavy with the cinnamon; the risotto was pretty good; the gelato was smooth though one dimensional); but the half chicken was billed as being served with "artichokes." Instead, I got two little pickled 'choke hearts that I'm willing to bet came out of a jar from Costco. This was quite a departure from the expectation... the chicken was beautiful and deserved an accompaniment that matched. A mezcal-based cocktail came out tasting like an old bandaid. The service was pleasant but one of the servers appeared to be chewing gum. So... nothing fatal or awful, but no real reason for me to return, either.
Autre Monde is a restaurant one should experience if you live in the suburbs or the city. Never had a bad meal. The chef, I understand, came from Spiaggia, and his deft hand with the Mediterranean cuisine shows. The menu changes often and is fresh and seasonal. We live in the western suburbs and most of the time the drive to AM is at least 45 minutes or more. Frankly, it's worth it. Tonight we had the duck sausage flat bread, (not to be missed! I dream about it!) roasted pork belly, stuffed pequillo peppers with smoked tomato sauce, mussels with chorizo and white wine, veal Marsala (not the traditional, but so much better) and a roasted chicken with artichokes. Tooo stuffed for dessert. My only complaint with AM is they are stingy with the wine pours👎
The food is always excellent. Our favorites are the beet salad, the tuna pate, the flatbreads, and all of the pastas. This last visit there was a terrific mushroom risotto, and a very good pesto gnocchi. The service is always spot on: ever helpful but not cloying. It's nice to have such a fine restaurant close by.
Our dinner at Autre Monde on Sept. 16 was a real disappointment from the very start.
The restaurant is really tight quarters and we were being shown to a table that looked very cramped and
was really close to another one. The host was talking animatedly to the folks sitting at that other table and actually had
his backside resting on the table we were being shown to! We asked for another table and were seated elsewhere.
The waiter greeted us and said he had been told a couple were celebrating an anniversary and they would have a special
dessert for them. WE NEVER GOT A THING!
The water we were served was tepid and I when I asked for a glass of cold water the waiter added ice to my glass.
He was not very attentive, though while we were chatting he interrupted one of us mid-sentence to discuss the menu.
A real no-no for waiters, in my experience.
The food was just OK. Why was there paper in the pita? It was tough and hard to cut and very messy to eat. The table was never really cleaned up after the plate was taken away. The staff seemed surprised when I asked for a clean plate. I am accustomed to being given a clean plate after a course, especially when it is very messy.
Beets with goat cheese? A very cliched offering.
The dessert, apple crumble, was not remarkable and seemed to have been burned.
TWO of the wines by the glass on the menu were unavailable.
The choices of gin and bourbon were quite limited.
The host came by, asked how things were and left before we could answer!! Yet he was having great animated conversations with the patrons at the next table.
We will not be back.
Waiter(Eric I think) was non-existent. Thank goodness we ordered the tasting menu and bottle of wine so that we didn't have to rely only on him.
20 minutes after ordering we received 1st course but still no wine. We sat there another 5 minutes looking at our plates. Last 45 minutes and last two courses we had nothing to drink. No wine , no water. Just wanted out of there at that point. Too bad ...rest of staff was great.
This restaurant was really a disappointment: dreary, not very clean looking, with waiters dressed in biker wear--not my idea of a nice evening out. The patio seemed like a better choice than the indoor area, but for a patio it had very few flowers or plants. The indoor area (where we moved after it started to rain) was cold, dark and noisy. The quality of the food was mixed, with some in our party liking the entrees they ordered and others not. I ordered veal marsala and was very disappointed. I expected veal that would melt in my mouth, but this was tough and unappetizing. Also, everything seemed overpriced, especially for the relatively small portions which we were served. With a name like Autre Monde, I expected French food, so perhaps a new name is needed. Other things that might help are putting the wait staff in white shirts or aprons, putting white tablecloths (or white paper) on the tables, and adding vegetables to the entrees or adding in a salad (how much could that cost?).
This was my 4th time here. The past 2 Brunches and 1 Dinner were outstanding. This restaurant used to be premier dining in the Western burbs. Overall just a "Fair" experience. It was my friend's birthday. I called and left a message that no one listened to and booked a reservation. The reservation was unnecessary as the place was empty save one other table. (Two more came in before we left.) Service started off quite nicely, but followup needs improvement - the place was empty after all. What was good: shrimp & grits - yum; green veggie - delish.
Not good: the Dome Cinnamon Bun - COLD. Sent it back, came out cold again. Eric said that he would check on the oven. He should have removed it from the bill. For $64.oo I could have taken my friend to a much nicer brunch.
I have dined at many fine restaurants in Chicago and surrounding areas and my rating is against that frame of reference. The first impression of the indoor venue was a musty smell, which was distracting but we must have gotten used to it over the course of the evening. The food was very innovative and tasty and the service was good, but drinks were expensive for the size. I requested a name brand drink and received a substitution without notification or permission. Two staff members asked if we were celebrating a special occasion and then did nothing about it, which was odd. I guess a retirement doesn't count. In view of many superior alternatives, I will not got out of my way to return.
One of my favorite spots. We popped in late Tuesday evening after a flight delay caused us to get back to Chicago later than expected, feeling tired and just wanting to hang out with a glass of wine and good food. When we arrived, we realized we were within an hour of closing, but they very graciously accommodated us. Great wine list free of the more usual suspects, and terrific food and service.
I've always loved dining and drinking the crafty cocktails at Autre Monde since they've been open. I hadn't been there in a long while, and, immediately, felt that they were short staffed the evening I was there. As I waited for my friend to meet me (and who was dining for her first time), I took a seat at the bar. In visits past, the bartenders have always been friendly, making suggestions, and greeted me within a reasonable timeframe. It was apparent to me that the bartender was in the weeds, and he was very slow to ask me what I wanted, and then when I asked him about one of their crafty cocktails I had had in previous visits, he was very quick to say they don't have it anymore, without offering an alternate. For what you spend there, I guess my expectations were what they always have been and fulfilled, this was the first time I have been disappointed. I'm not sure if there has been a turnover in staff, but if anyone is reading this that is in charge of hiring, perhaps this review may be a red flag that it just wasn't up to par. I'm so sad to have written, a not-so-positive review, I've always loved dining there! The food, is still, fantastic, I have always loved the unique dishes and many kudos to the chef!
