Athos Restaurant Ratings and Reviews
Thanksgiving dinner with grandma, wanted vegetarian and healthy and loved it. The food was well prepared, service was first rate and left feeling like we had a terrific meal but not so full we couldn’t move...like so many traditional thanksgiving meals.
This was our first time at Athos, we will definitely return.
Also...we had trouble finding a restaurant open on thanksgiving using yelp and trip advisor, Open Table was the perfect solution, very pleased with how it all worked out.
The food is amazing! I got the Pork Chop and my wife got the Grekolimano. The pork chop was out of this world! The figs, goat cheese and cinamon balsamic reduction topping creates a medley of flavor that explodes in your mouth. The Grekolimano also was delicious, the ouzo sauce brings it all together. Coupled with a great bottle of wine and there is nothing like it! Our server, Shelby, was very attentive, friendly and helpful in making our choices.
We have eaten at Athos many times, but we're disappointed in the food this time. My wife has always enjoyed the chicken souvlaki, but not so much this time. The chicken pieces were huge, but stringy. Is it from an older chicken? We would have preferred the former smaller, more tender chicken pieces.
This was our first time at Athos, but definitely not our last! Everything was spectacular - from the amazing food, to the incredible selection of vegetarian and gluten free options throughout the menu, to our incredible server, Danielle. I can't believe it has taken us this long to try Athos! This has definitely become one of our new favorite restaurants!
Haven't been there in quite awhile. Still really authentic greek food that is not just moussaka and spanakopita. Also, they have an extensive greek wine list.
Glad we went mid-week, because it can be noisy on the weekend.
We will be back if we can't make it downstate to Astoria.
The restaurant offers a lot of delicious options, and the chef is one of the best you can find! We had the chance to try several different dishes and all of them went beyond our expectations. The live music and dances offered that evening were extra experience and pleasure we did not expect.
I would strongly recommend this restaurant!
I have visited Athos on 3 occasions and, each time, I was delighted with my dinner and enjoyed my experience. My husband joined me this past weekend. I have a difficult time choosing what to eat - the portions are generous, the food is fresh and beautifully presented. We started with a Greek salad. It was perfect. I have had the fresh fish entree and it is a treat. This time, I opted for the moussaka and it was simply delicious. My husband chose the lamb. He is picky about lamb and he enjoyed his dinner. The bartender helped with a wine selection and it was perfect for our dinners.
The food is delicious and the service was excellent. My only complaint is their wine list. I ordered a bottle of their house Greek wine at $32/ bottle. The wine was like drinking colored water. If they paid more than $8 for the bottle, I would be surprised. With that, their markup is 4X the value of wine which is unheard of. Most places mark up between 2 and 2 1/2 times the cost of the wine. You would think that a Greek restaurant would want to have a good house table wine for their customers instead of the swill that they are serving.
It's easy to understand why Athos is such a highly rated Greek restaurant. Each aspect of the dinner, from appetizer to entree to dessert was wonderfully prepared and the food's presentation nicely matched its flavorfulness. Our server offered good wine pairings and suggested appetizers which complemented each entree. Our group has met at Athos on 3 prior occasions and we've agreed that whenever we meet in Albany, Athos will definitely be our restaurant of choice.
I travel often for business, and it's not always fun dining solo, but the staff at Athos were warm and friendly, making me very comfortable. I chose to sit at the bar where the bartender Teri was gracious and efficient. The extensive menu made for a difficult decision... so many things I wanted to try! I had the whole fire-roasted branzini which was filleted at the table. Greek herbs, fresh lemon and olive oil topped the fish and it was truly delicious!
Chose this restaurant for a reunion with an old friend. My choice was supported by good reviews from Albany newspapers.
Was VERY DISAPPOINTED from start to finish.
The bartender botched my cocktail. I did not complain because my friend of some years just arrived.
The wine was good, but our server poured the wine without allowing me to taste it. Unacceptable in a fine dining restaurant. If Athos is now a pedestrian place, it should lower its prices by half.
I had the sausage appetizer, Loukaniko. The sausage was so overcooked it was hard and crunchy. Was very difficult to chew. Could not really taste it.
I had the Grekolimano. While the shrimp were tender, the sauce was bland and the rice pilaf was just steamed rice you could make at home in a rice cooker. Not rice pilaf. My husband had the swordfish souvlaki.
While the wine we had was good and on sale that day, since Athos does not produce that wine, it can't take credit.
You may think I am being hard on Athos. Yes, but so is Albany. We were there for 2 hours on a Wednesday night and the place was nearly empty from 7-9 PM.
Athos needs to get serious about what made them great, else it may become another failed restaurant.
It actually took me a few years to try Athos Restaurant due to all the conflicting reviews. Every aspect of this restaurant was impressive. Grace was the best server I have ever had (both here and abroad). Often when a restaurant has few customers the service and food is disappointing. Not at Athos. I was there on a Monday at 4:30, everything was perfect. I highly recommend you look past the negative reviews and give Athos a try.
