Athens Restaurant and Grill
Food was fair. Our two meals were not very well prepared. Not completely cooked, not authentic and made us both sick.
This Restaurant is one of our favorites. We try to go there as often as we can, we drive over 35 miles one way to eat there. The owner is a wonderful kind gentleman and really does everything he can to make sure you have a nice experience. They have private dining for large party's and outdoor seating. The food is fantastic, and is 100% authentic Greek dishes. They have all your favorite Greek dishes, such as Appetizers; Mezes Platter, Tzatziki App, Eggplant Ala Athens, Stuffed Mushrooms, Calamari, Saganaki (imported cheese Kasseri) served to table flambe'ed, Hummus, Spanakopita (Spinach pie), and Stuffed grape leaves (Dolmadakia). They also have homemade soups, Greek salads, Their famous Greek pizza, Greek chicken (Koto 'Polo) Ribeye Steaks, NY strip Steaks, Pork filet, Beef Kabob, and my favorite; Leg of Lamb, Sliced, Boneless, melt in your mouth good comes with Greek roasted potatoes (which are so very good) and Salad and fresh baked Greek Bread...mmmm, mmmm, also they have other Greek dishes such as; Moussaka, Pasticcio, Pasta Entrees, Gyro Platter, Souvlaki Platter, Sea Bass(Lavraki), Grilled Norwegian Salmon, Fresh Fried Flounder, Broiled Whole Flounder, Crab Cakes Ala Athens, They have wonderful Greek desserts, A full Bar, Specialty Drinks, Many different wines to choose from, and you can get a carafe of Ouzo for just $14.00.... This is our favorite restaurant, and I am sure you will love it as much as we do.
Great experience, terrific server (Dorothy), made us feel special. The owner came by and made sure we we enjoyed our meal. Most certainly will return with guests. Food was delicious and plentiful.
We ate here with my parents and daughters. So good!
I took my family there for my wife’s birthday. The food was wonderful the owner was very friendly and came by her table multiple times to make sure that we were OK. I will definitely go back
We have been to the Athens a few times before and enjoyed our food. However this time it was different. My friend has a serious allergy to MSG (Monosodium Glutenate) that causes major stomach problems for her. We ordered the Greek Lemon Chicken Soup as an appetizer and within 10 minutes she realized she was having an allergic reaction. This is a concern for those individual who have an allergy to MSG. As we got home, the rest of the evening caused her extreme problems...I didn't get a chance to mention it to the owner what had happened he was very busy with things going on in his restaurant, but I think we'll not go there anymore because of what happened to my friend. Before you order the soup make sure you ask if it was made with Chicken broth containing MSG...she had asked him a while back if it contained MSG and she was told no MSG was in the soup and hadn't had a problem until this time.
Always a nice overall experience. Good food, nice setting, reasonable price, above average portions.
The service was as great the food was some of worst I've had in Charleston
Excellent food and service.
We live out of town and Athens is a must when we visit Charleston. Great food. The leg of lamb melts in your mouth. The spaghetti sauce could be eaten alone. Athens is definitely worth a visit
Ordered a pizza first and immediately to pacify a child on the way. Took very long. No bread brought until the entire group ordered. Orders in general took a while but understand with everything cooked to order. Difficult if you have kids present. No child menu that we were aware of. Very good tasting food but did find some items very salty including potatoes and eggplant.
Well they make everything and all is average. I can not think of what more to say but I need more digits for the review.
Always the friendliest service and great Greek chicken
Standard Greek fare, nothing special. Service is tremendous (Melissa and Hanna). Pricing is good. Impresses me as a nice family venue.
Great atmosphere and awesome service. Outdoor patio was perfect for our first date. Food was amazing.
It is a nice restaurant.
Wonderful restaurant. Great food and great service.
Restaurant was not too full for a Saturday night. Service was good. Food delicious.
We have been going to Athens for 14 years (before the move to this location) and have found the food and service to be consistently good.
We have been going to Athens Restaurant for years, so it was a natural choice for our celebration. Our server was friendly and attentive, and the food, as always, was outstanding.
The restaurant has a lovely atmosphere and the wait staff were attentive and polite. Food was brought out in a timely manner. Unfortunately, there was too much salt in the Alfredo sauce. My friends got a dish with eggplant and also said that their dish was too salty.
I had eaten there several years ago, but will not be going back.
Traveling through area and came upon Athen Restaurant by using OpenTable...wonderful surprise! Couldn't decide on an entree so treated ourselves to mezes platter, spanakopita and eggplant ala Athens off the appetizer menu in order to try more than one dish. FABULOUS and filling. The presentation was very appealing and the flavors delicious. The mini gyro had marinated meat that was very tender and flavorful. The rolled eggplant was stuffed with mozzarella cheese and served with tzatziki sauce that was very fresh tasting and I loved finding cucumbers in it and not just a smooth sauce as so many restaurants serve. Spanakopita had flaky crust with a nice mixture of spinach, spices and onions....Shared a house salad and ended with dessert of kataiffi(next time will have the baklova). It was charming to meet the owner and visit with him. A wonderful place to dine and we will go there again when driving in the area.
Food and service very good. Enjoyable evening.
I have always loved this restaurant and the food is always perfect!
We had a great meal and a very vibrant waitress who made a suggestion for an appetizer that was awesome. The portion size was quite large so we were able to take some food one for lunch the next day. I would definitely go back next time we are in the area. We really found a gem.
We arrived and they did not have our reservation, but told us it would be 10 minutes. We decided to have a drink at the bar, while we waited. The phones and restaurant were very busy, it was Valentines Day after all. The lady behind the bar was totally overwhelmed by the phones, and proceeded to yell over the patrons that the hostess needed to answer the phones, instead of standing there. The hostess yelled back that she couldn't be in more than one place at once. Then the overwhelmed bartender walked away from the bar, the phone rang, and she ran back saying "Oh for F**k sake!!!" We finished our drinks, payed and left. We were very disappointed, looking forward to the food, which has been awesome in the past.
Made a reservation on OpenTable for 7:30pm on Valentines Day. We showed up on time but still had to wait 30 minutes to get seated. They were seating based on first come first serve so reservation did not matter. Next time will not make a reservation.
Made a reservation and was seated within 5 minutes of arrival. From then, it went downhill. Our waitress got our drink orders and also requested water. Took quite a while to get drinks, no water. We watched
people arrive after us and how they received their drinks AND bread right away. After at least three couples after us getting their order and still NO sight of our waitress, we had decided we were going to leave. At that time the Manager was going table to table asking how everything was. As he approached us, we explained we were just thinking about leaving since we had been ignored. Immediately, he said he would take care of us the remainder of the evening. He brought us another round of drinks, on him, and fresh hot bread came, along with our water. Next our order came. He kept apologizing and when we finished eating he gave us an awesome dessert on the house. He went over and beyond to please us and we really appreciated his attention. We will be back but will request not to have Dorothy for our waitress. We, however, did leave her a nice tip. (If it had been up to me, she wouldn't have gotten one, but my man is just the sweetest)
Great place for a quick bite as parents with kids at home down the street! We love the original Greek beer. The server seemed frustrated and rarely smiled.
Awesome food and overall nice time
Greek food is hard to find in this area and good Greek is even harder. This is a solution. We went very early on a week night (5:00pm) and so no crowd or noise. The food was excellent and portions very large (leftovers and/or sharing for sure). Saganaki is a favorite and it was beautifully done; different than my previous experience but great. Lamb and chicken were both very good. No room for dessert; boo! We will go again.
We've always had great food and service, and this was no exception. We will definitely be back!
Consider offering smaller portions or advising people to split plates. Too large portions.
All eight of us thoroughly enjoyed our food. The service was so bad that it became almost comical. Try to find your server, try to get something else, try to order another round (thanks to me walking to the bar and ordering there we were able to have a second drink), try to get the bills straight...l invited seven of my friends out to dinner and was embarrassed. It will be a long time before I return.
Owner and staff friendly. Error in bill was dealt with promptly.
Best anniversary dinner.. Staff was awesome and owners are very sweet and friendly. I would recommend it to anyone..
House red wine was too sweet. My wife ordered the Greek salad and added gyro meat and it was cold. I had the gyro platter meat was warm and soft needed to be crispier. Service was good but we were there early and it wasn't busy. We had a taste for Greek food and this fell short. Also looks like the hostess didn't check us in so no Open Table points.
