About this restaurant

  • Innovative
  • Romantic
  • Good for special occasions
Atelier Crenn serves chic, contemporary French cuisine with an artistic touch. The menu describes the multi-course meal through expressive poetry rather than the usual prose found on most menus. Mood, as opposed to a particular craving, is important here. Past early course options have included the salad with carrot jerky, the salsify with white chocolate and cauliflower and the squid ink rice paper. Larger plates at Atelier Crenn are beautifully prepared and aesthetically pleasing, such as the king crab with fennel and tarragon sorbet, the duck egg with pate in porcini mushroom broth, the scallop with pear and sea cucumber dashi, and the bone marrow with osetra caviar and nasturtium. Atelier Crenn's palate cleansers are perfect between-course refreshers. Try the cool raspberry gin and tonic tower.

Chef Dominque Crenn has created a culinary masterpiece at her Michelin ** restaurant. Every one of the multitude of small courses served is a work of art and at the same time very delicious. She is a supremely creative chef. The service staff is very gracious and Chef Crenn visited all the tables several times during the evening. Every foodie needs to put this restaurant on their must go to list.

The cuisine! The poem! We make a point of eating at two or three-starred Michelin restaurants when traveling for business, and the meal at Atelier Crenn was the most well-composed and well-structured meal we’ve enjoyed in the U.S. A poem helps the mind play with existing and well-established patterns of thought, and can even help re-route or detour those patterns by making us see the familiar anew. The poem as the meal and the meal as a poem is a brilliant device by the chef. I suppose it could seem gimmicky to some, but the flow, the challenge, the work in understanding the poem helps you understand and enjoy the meal and vice versa. We enjoyed the Grand Tasting Menu, a beautiful set of 15+ courses, and were able to add the special course of risotto with crab and white truffles. Salsify, Wagyu, carrot jerky, risotto, porcini broth, … it is truly inventive and flavorful cuisine. We also had the opportunity to meet and talk with Chef. She spent time at each table, chatting, discussing food, the recent renovations to the space, etc. It was truly an honor to meet her and it made the Atelier Crenn experience very intimate. I do have some minor concerns and they revolve around service. One concern was the fact that my partner’s chair was repeatedly bumped into during our four-hour meal. I know the three-top behind him included Elisabeth Faulkner, the famed pastry chef, but I didn’t appreciate our experience being negatively affected by having another chef dining the same evening as us. A guest should not notice any decline in quality (service), no matter who is in the dining room, at a Michelin-starred restaurant. The others I have communicated to the restaurant. We’ll absolutely be back for the excellent cuisine and because of the excellent service we received from Carol both before and after our dining experience.

Food was spectacular. Layers of flavors in every dish. Inventive and arresting presentation. A bit much for my husband, but he thought the tastes were excellent. Atmosphere is spare, yet sophisticated and surprisingly warm. Service was prompt and efficient, yet a little disengaged. Chef was present in the room and visited every table and she was genuinely welcoming. Sommalier was the one off-putting aspect of the evening. Officious and superior attitude. While I realize we didn't do the pairings or order some $500 bottle of wine, this is an intimate and not inexpensive restaurant and everyone should feel welcome.

As the menu is a poem, each course that arrives is a surprise, described by the attentive waiters. The natural setting is calming, and the detailed artistry of the accompanying garnishes to the food accentuate this. Wonderful treat.

We had the Grand tasting menu (only option on weekends) with wine pairing. We knew it would be expensive going in, but were eager for the experience. The food was excellent - interesting flavors, artistically presented. The wine pairings were just so-so: eclectic finds (not a single chardonnay, cabernet, even pinot in the bunch!), none of the food/wine combos really blew me away, and I was a bit disappointed in some of the red selections. In retrospect, the overall evening was overpriced - 3-star prices for 2-star dining. Not sure I'd go back.

This was our first time at all in a michelinstar restaurant and it was amazing. The atmosphere was casual and that was perfectly for SF. The attention for the guest is amazing. Especially that the chef herself came out of the kitchen for some smalltalk made you feel special. The idea and presentation of the food is perfect. We had 20 courses during our 3hr diner and every course was a snetence of a poem. Very nice. Every course had its own tasting explosion in your mouth. I never tasted so many things in such small bites. The autumn concept was everything had a connection to the sea. But even for me as not that great a fan of seafood it was magic. I ate everything and with taste It was an evening I will remember for the rest of my life
