This was our third time over the last few years. Each time has been very good to outstanding. The Black Sea Bass was amazing. My wife had the Paccheri, which was excellent. We'll be back.
The restaurant hasn’t been the same since the renovation. The service is worse — everyone feels new and inexperienced. Also, recently, the food has changed for the worse.
Yesterday’s meal was for C-! Food was the worst part of our evening. Risotto was watery and not tasty, pasta was not al dente, it was simply not cooked like a cardboard.
Wine menu!!! There is nothing less than 60$ for a bottle of wine! Not going back, not recommending to anyone.
We have dined here from time to time but this time, the food was especially good and the menu offered interesting options. We were surprised that a prix fixe menu was offered for Valentine's week, not just Valentine's Day, and it was a very good value. Everything, from soup to dessert, was delicious, and the petite filet was one of the best we've encountered. Cocktails are overpriced, at $15, but are tasty. Service was attentive. There was a large, noisy group having a great time, which was good to see, but which made it very difficult to have a conversation. It would have been better if they had been seated elsewhere than in the main dining room.
My wife and I had a delightful Valentine Day dinner here. They had a special four course Valentine Day menu for $55 per person and every course was delicious. The wine list is fairly extensive and reasonable. When they didn't have the wine on the list that I wanted, our waitress made two suggestions at a lower price. I chose one of them and it was superb. All in all it was a delightful evening with superb food, service and wine. We definitely will be coming back!
Not impressed!! Overrated and overpriced for what they provide.
This was our first visit to this restaurant, and we had waited for over six months, as they were doing a renovation to the space. While the restaurant is in a rather non-descript brick building (with plenty of parking), once inside we were treated to a calm, beautifully decorated space. We were seated at a quiet table for two in a corner, which was wonderful, as about half an hour into our meal, a large group came in and so the decibel level increased dramatically. I had began my meal with a salad, followed by veal-stiffed ravioli. My husband had the blue crab crostini and then wild Alaskan salmon. We each had a dessert: lemon tart with fresh berries and a delicate apple cake with vanilla gelato. Our server, Giovanni , was attentive, friendly but not intrusive, and knew the menu and its preparation well. We would return here. One note of caution: the bill can run quite high if one is not careful, or if you need to watch your budget. They do have specials which are worth checking out.
The food was excellent. I thought the back ground music was ruining the good atmosphere.
Very nice as usual. Bit overpriced
Great meal. Recommend. Need to go back to hang at the bar (good for small crowd).
The garganelli with bolognese sauce was absolutely fantastic, will return again.
We looked forward to returning to this restaurant after a long hiatus due to their remodeling. Sadly, we’ve now removed it from our list of old standbys. In the past, we would tarry over the menu because everything sounded so good. This time, it took ages to decide because few items enticed us. What we finally ordered was good, but not the special birthday celebration we’d hoped for. Also, inexplicably, our waiter addressed almost all of his comments, menu explanations and queries directly to my husband, as if I weren’t even there. Too bad for the waiter, since I was the one “treating” for this birthday dinner and, thus, deciding on the tip.
Excellent place to take your wife, which is what I did.
I enjoyed a restaurant week special which was delicious. The burrata was exceptional. I ordered the veal saltimbocca and it seemed more like osso bucco to me. But it tasted good. They also did a very nice thing for my daughter. It was her 14th birthday and they brought her gelato with a sparkler in it. She loved it and it made the evening a bit more special for her.
As always, our visit was most enjoyable. It was restaurant week, and we took advantage of the 3 course lunch menu. The burrata/beet salad was exceptional -- hoping it will be on the regular menu. the Italian coffee creme brulee was creative and tasty. The rainbow trout fillet was ok but not up to other items in flavor. The wait staff were lovely.
Have been a patron at this restaurant over the years. With the new re-opening I expected more. Perhaps that will come when the pizzeria opens. At lunch, the beet salad was very good. The soup of the day was bland and poorly seasoned. Both of our seafood dishes from the special luncheon menu were disappointing. The grilled seafood had an "off" taste and pasta with mussels and shrimp were over powered by a heavy smoky flavour. Service was unremarkable.
Not sure which was better the fabulous food or the spectacular service!
My wife and I have been to Assaggi many times and we will return many more. The food is always excellent and genuinely Italian. It is well laid out and decorated and we consider it the best Italian restaurant in the DC area.
We had to come back! Once again, a wonderful night. The food was so great...authentic Italian. Refined service with a stunning decor...and food to enjoy! Highly recommended.
We both had wonderful meals. I wanted to try every dish that I saw go by. Excellent service.
The updates look great and more edgy, although we loved the previous family, "italian" atmosphere. They removed their gnocchi which was one of the dishes we were hoping to have. No offense to the service which was great but we missed the older familiar waiters of before. Seems the servings are smaller and more expensive.
Excellent food and superb service.
Post concert dinner. Service was a little slow
glad this local spot has reopened following renovation. nice menu selection. attentive staff.
Another great experience at this restaurant, I've been coming here for 7 years now and have never had a single bad meal. Keep up the good work!
We were disappointed in the menu since some entrees were not available. We ordered the wild halibut that was delicious but the portion was very small for the price. The dish had very little veggies and presentation was uninspiring. It looked like the food was thrown together.
The service was good and we were not rushed.
very small portion, way over priced, Fish was two inches square
The menu selections, service and presentation all excellent.
Food at Assaggi was delicious. Francesco, our host, was one of the best and made the visit memorable. Paccheri was out of this world. I cannot wait to go back.
Wonderful food & service!
A very nice lunch with delicious food, attentive but discreet service, an uncrowded and unrushed feel with no difficulty carrying on a conversation, servings appropriate for lunch, but a bit pricey for a friends gathering for lunch.
One of our favorite places to dine!
Bonus: the gluten-free pasta is absolutely delicious!
We showed up on a Saturday for lunch. Our lunch at this otherwise great restaurant was somewhat spoiled by a noisy local meeting honoring a local politician.
Food was great; wine was very good, but very overpriced.
I loved the feel of the old restaurant before renovations and loved the old staff. Post renovation, cold, dark, modern and the entire staff has changed. Menu is very much the same as before. When they first opened no meal choice was a disappointment. I can not say that now. Over-salted, overpriced and the traditional feel is gone. Hope the pizzeria, when it opens will be worth the trip.
Since the renovation, it is trying to be a quality, nice restaurant. . . but through the glass wall to the bar is the sports channel at all times. Not consistent with what they are trying to do. Slow service. Had to ask to place the order, had to ask to get the check. Sadly, there are no good places in McLean.
We celebrated a 91st birthday. It was wonderful. The food was delicious and they gave her a fabulous dessert. The food was simply amazing. I would highly recommend the Salumi and Burrata appetizers. There was a large party, which made service a bit slow. For an elderly lady, it was very loud. Overall, a great experience.
This is a lovely restaurant with delicious, well-prepared and presented food. There is a degree of quiet elegance to it which makes it ideal for a meal with friends where you can easily talk and to each other.
The food is always wonderful, but I have a small quibble. I carefully read the menu and the last 2 times I was there, an ingredient listed in the descriptions was missing. My cozze had no tomatoes and the guanciale was hardly discernible. Last time the seafood salad that was on the special of the day list, had no avocados that were in the description. Each meal was very good, but it is curious why something should be missing especially on a "specials" list and since there is a high-end grocery store in the same shopping center to fill in any void. Still, nothing to stop me from returning - just wish they were more careful.
The food and service are excellent. We had fabulous meals with a great wine selection. The only problem is the noise level in the restaurant. It is very loud which makes it difficult to talk with your table mates. It would be difficult if you were trying to conduct business or have a quiet, conversation.
We have been there on many occasions and the food and service is always excellent. We were disappointed with two things: we brought our own wine and the corkage fee was outrageous; we asked for side dishes of pasta with the most expensive entre and were charged a half portion price for each of the simple side dishes. While the food is great, the value is questionable.
