Located in the heart of McLean Square, Assaggi Osteria is a neighborhood staple for upscale, regional Italian cuisine from executive chef Matteo Venini.

Adjacent to the refined osteria, Assaggi Pizzeria offers Neapolitan pizzas and small plates in a casual, modern setting. Both concepts offer a full bar with an extensive selection of Italian wines, as well as beer and cocktails.

Valentines Day dinner. We typically order the fresh pasta but we branched out. I had the lamb chops, which were the best I’ve ever had! My husband had the steak. He requested medium rare and it came out medium well. But he said it was delicious. It’s not a steak house. Service is always top notch and atmosphere is romantic.

We chose to dine here for Valentine’s Day. We did not order the special menu, however, the items on the regular menu were outstanding. We shared the appetizer of trumpet mushrooms with foie gras and duck prosciutto rosettes on top with assorted tiny greens.
The Cacio e Pepe was deliciously tossed cheese and pepper bucatini, which we shared as a first course, and the veal Milanese followed with a nicely oil tossed arugula side. The veal breading was a little heavy, but deliciously flavorful. The pistachio, vanilla, and chocolate gelato were excellent.
It’s so nice to have this restaurant staple in McLean!

Delicious, efficient and comfortable—great place for a good meal. Need some gluten free dessert but chef has some interesting flavor combinations. Thoroughly enjoyed.

Went for winter restaurant week only to find out they weren't participating for whatever reason even tho they were listed as a participating restaurant. Had a very nice meal of shishito peppers, asparagus, black in squid pasta and branzino. Service was very good. Food was seasoned well.

This recent visit to Assaggi was great. The fish, pasta, wine, bread, and service were all outstanding. One of the best restaurants in NoVa, and probably the best Italian restaurant.

Disappointed in the restaurant menu for restaurant week. Only two of four entrees were available. Would have liked one of the paste dishes of equal value and they would not allow you to change. The best thing about going was to see their regular menu and the prices. I think they are way over priced. I can find a number of places I can eat for less than $200 which are equally good or better. The service was outstanding and the restaurant is very nicely decorated. I will not go back or recommend this restaurant to anyone.

Again...food and service were outstanding. Absolutely wonderful authentic Italian cuisine. We had the whole branzino and it was perfectly cooked. What was even more impressive was the expert way the server fileted the fish tableside....just perfect. We have vowed that we would go back more frequently and tonight reinforced that!

The quality of the food was outstanding. However the main course portion size for the pasta dishes was very small. Our teenage son loved the food, but after eating his portion and half of mine (which I gave him when I realized he was starving), he had to fix himself a meal a few hours later.

We made a reservation for 12:30 PM on December 26 for six people. We made an email confirmation on December 25 that we would be there. Sadly when we arrived, there was no one at the restaurant. We were all coming from different locations including Ashburn and Washington DC. This was extremely inconvenient and we did not get a phone call letting us know that the restaurant would not be open. Very disappointed as we had all been looking forward to enjoying a nice lunch.

The food here is uneven. Excellent braised pork cheeks, delicious and tender. Octopus with greens was underseasoned and octopus didn't have any flavor. Squid ink pasta with clams: pasta was slightly undercooked but flavor was very good; lobster dish: lobster was tasty but in the presentation there was a piece of chewy pastry or pasta (not sure what it was) lying on the top of the food and it had no flavor. Lamb chops with herb crust: These were oversalted. The desserts (apple streudel w/ chocolate gelato and tiramisu were very good.

We have been customers for a while but we think they have improved tremendously with a new chef. My wife had the bolognese with pasta and I had the veal Milanese and both were exceptional. Also it was very busy for a Tuesday night as there were quite a few holiday celebrations but the managers and wait staff were very attentive. One of the co-owners is a long time colleague and friend of my wife and I and it was great to see her.

Completely satisfied with the service at this place! The food was amazing i would totally recommend it. The only thing that made me upset was that i called the day before to ask if they could do something for my girlfriends birthday. The person i spoke to said yeah we can do a cake or something. I asked him if i needed to do anything on my end to make sure that it would happen and he said no, that he would go ahead and take care of it and put it on my reservation. However by the end of dinner, no one came with anything so i was disappointed with that because i really wanted to make her day special.

Assaggi combines excellent, well-prepared northern Italian cuisine with a relaxing, convivial atmosphere. The branzino, served with professional flair at the table, was excellent. The Italian veal chop was a flavorful cut of meat prepared exactly as ordered. They have a "killer" tiramisu! We had a delightful evening and definitely will return.

We have eaten here ever since they opened. This was perhaps the worst meal that I’ve had anywhere. I ordered the veal chop. It was over cooked, dry, tasteless and tough. I didn’t know that veal could be this bad!
I sent it back and ordered a pasta dish that I frequently ordered in the past. Again, it was tasteless, under seasoned and the meat sauce was tough... it, too, was something that I’ve eaten many times over the years.
Now we come to dessert. There was a strudel on the menu with apple and squash in it. After tasting it, I was sure there were nuts in it as well. I’m highly allergic to nuts. After the first bite I asked the manager if there were, indeed, nuts in it. The answer was yes! Can you imagine a dish on the menu that states all of the ingredients and leaves out the nuts.... something that can cause serious problems for those of us that have a nut allergy? I was not a happy customer.

My daughter ordered pasta with clams. The clams were full of sand....not cleaned as they should have been. After sending them back, she ordered just plain pasta with butter and grated cheese. Another dish that couldn’t be eaten. The pasta was so undercooked that it was inedible. At that point she lost her appetite and left the restaurant hungry.

The others ordered the eggplant parmigiana appetizer as a meal with salads. It was acceptable but not great.

All in all, as I began this by saying that it was a bad meal, there was nothing to generate interest in ever returning.

Incidentally, the manager was no one we’d ever seen there before. The waitstaff ....unrecognizable. I’m thinking that this restaurant must have been sold. It is not the place that we’ve enjoyed in the past. It is, as I said before, perhaps the worst food that I’ve ever been served......we’ve wasted time and money that I would have rather donated to someone needy.

This hurts my heart but I don’t know that I can continue to recommend what used to be one of my very favorite Italian restaurants in DC. We had dinner this weekend with friends and the entrees were uniformly disappointing and served cool to cold.

Maybe they were overwhelmed (every table was full) but they have to be able to manage the flow. We may try it anew but fact is, there are lots of options out there.

The stuffed cooked olives were wonderful. The Rugola salad is very good. The pasts with Venison meat was excellent. The mixed drinks are first class. Unfortunately, we had to wait 20 minutes after our dishes were cleared to get our check and it was a light crowd plus our waiter kept walking by us with no acknowledgment of the delay.
