I glanced at reviews before we went which said the restaurant was very good, the food was delicious, but the service could be brusque. They compared it to a typical Roman restaurant in Italy. This is all absolutely true. The food was very good, though quite expensive. However, I don’t believe the server smiled more than once even though we tried many times to get him to be pleasant. He was brusque, short with us, and certainly not Italian! If he was just a bit pleasant the evening would’ve been much more enjoyable. I would not return.

Our go to place for great Italian food. Pastas are amazing. Service from Aleks is always very professional and courteous. Plus she knows her wine and makes very practical suggestions.

Assaggi is sooo authentically (and quirkily) Italian, particularly with chef Francesco Pescatore at the helm. Authenticity in the creative, yet simple cuisine like its paper thin carpaccio, slices of proscuitto with roasted figs and parmigiano cheese panna cotta, and it signature veal chop. Add to that its menus governed by the seasons -- we had shaved white truffles that perfumed a perfectly "al dente" risotto. It's quirks? In Italy, its not uncommon for a single kitchen to serve both a formal restaurant and a more casual trattoria -- here its a restaurant and a pizzeria (which makes one of the finest pizzas in the mid-Atlantic with crust that crispy and dark on the outside and chewy on the inside). And one recent review mentioned another quirk -- Italians are seldom in a hurry to bring you a check allowing you amply time to sip your espresso or limoncello.

Our first time here. The service was excellent. My wife and I were going to share a pasta and a main. They split them without us having to ask. The wine list is very interesting. Wines from Italy, California, France and more. We will definitely be back.

I ordered the Ravioli with Egg Plant. It looked like it had been in the refrigerator. It was also cold, like it had not been microwaved long enough. I asked for them to heat it and I got a NEW plate, but it was the same 'microwaved' looking and tasting.

have spent thousands here over the years (visiting) so thought it was a safe bet ... $900 for dinner for 6 ... AWFUL ... only thing worse that food was service ... apparently another state paying people not to work ... hope it returns to form but will need local friends to tell me so before I return

The food was fresh and delicious. Portions were modest, but ample for smaller appetites. The homemade pasta was divine. The beef tenderloin was fantastic. The service was a little slow to get started, but then was very attentive but not hovering. the main outdoor patio is covered, and very pleasant.

This meal was delicious! The margarita pizza with mushrooms was excellent. Scallops appetizer was good, A green salad ( not specified on menu) was fabulous with crisp whole baby Romain leaves, shaved carrot and a lovely drizzle of dressing. Friendly waiter as we sat in the alley outside, and enjoyed the falling rain with friends.

A friend and I made a Friday, 6pm reservation. It was out intent to do wine and appetizers. No appetizers appear on the menu now and a very limited amount of wines by the glass. It is evident this restaurant only wants to serve people who eat a complete dinner and a full bottle of wine. No bar menu either. We would have been happy to sit at the bar. No Happy Hour either.

Celebrating our first outdoor meal in Va. with friends since the start of the Pandemic, we sat at outdoor table on Old Dominion. Our waitress was charming and efficiently brought dishes to our table. What a lovely meal! The cacio e pepe was very nice, as was the excellent linguine with crab special with nice wine selection- so glad we can frequent this place again!!

The service and food flavors were outstanding. Servers were attentive and worked as a team. Sitting outside, there is a lot of road noise so you do end up shouting to be heard at some points. The portion sizes are very small. We ended up being hungry an hour after eating - and that was with an appetizer, main course, and dessert. Price is high for portion size. We ended up spending $120 for two. The food was wonderful, just could have used more of it to feel like it was a better value.

It's nice to see them busy again! I like their Italian wine list. The food was fine. My husband liked his beef tenderloin dish very much. My salmon was just ok, a bit overcooked. I had the carpaccio to start. The arugula was wilted in some places and it was more cheese and salad than carpaccio. The lemon tart with meringue was not so good. The crust was hard to break and there were just a few slivers of meringue. For the price they charge the quality of the food should be optimal.
