Askal is Melbourne’s newest contemporary Filipino restaurant and bar located on 167 Exhibition Street. Comprised of a dynamic team of culinary experts, Askal is a three-storey establishment sits in a historical building from the 1800s. The menu is a celebration of traditional Filipino flavours and techniques, showcasing bold and vibrant dishes inspired by ancestral recipes passed down through generations.

The whole experience was 5 stars from start to finish. From the warm welcome of the waiters, to chefs and bartenders. We started with some amaretto sours which were amazing! Followed by the kare kare doughnut, chicken and mushroom siomai, pork belly tocino, Collinson & Co Angus beef rump with bone marrow and balut which is probably the only balut I will ever eat, it was that good! Thanks to John and the Askal team for the experience!

My husband and I had the Piyesta Menu, and we enjoyed every bit of it. Each dish was cleverly crafted with innovative twists that showcased Filipino cuisine, making our dining experience truly remarkable. I highly recommend this restaurant.

Food was quite tasty but not a wow. Our waitress was outstanding - friendly and full of information. Restaurant was slightly cold but our seats were by the door, which did not close properly.

This special menu was amazing and every dish was delicious, the star dish for us was the chicken tinola consomme. Cocktails were all a 10/10 as always All the staff were lovely and friendly, making the dining experience a great one; loved that they wiped the tables after each course. Shout out to Ray, she was lovely and had a great time chatting with her. Her suggestions for cocktails were great Had a great time overall

We ordered three dishes in total. The prawn entrée was decent, but the beef rice with bone marrow and the ube cake were underwhelming — definitely not worth the price. Service was also disappointing; at one point, the server asked me to put my used paper into the empty bowl myself before he would take it away. For a restaurant at this price point, I expected much better service. Overall, a poor value for money and I wouldn’t recommend it.

I really enjoyed the food and ambience of the restaurant. I'm keen to go back and try the rest of the menu. Service wise, I'm aware that we get only an allocation of 1.5hours, I just felt I was hurried to finish up because of the next booking. Considering we still have 30 mins to go. I don't think it will take them that long to prep the table for the next booking. I reckon that's the only part that needs to be improved based on our visit. But kudos to the team for the excellent food! Love, love it!

All courses were a hit. A fabulous place I’d go to again. Each dish was memorable, with my favourite being the entree. I look forward to exploring the menu further. Cocktails were the best Ive ever had. As someone who doesn’t like the taste of strong alcohol but loves the different flavours in a cocktail, I was bracing for the alcohol to hit. However, the buko pan-damn and 4 seasons paloma were perfect. The combination of flavours was harmonious and the drinks were light. I plan to recommend Askal and its beverage menu to all my friends. Service was also superb and decor was stunning. My Filipino family appreciated the chandeliers and the waiter for our table was friendly and receptive to our questions. 10/10.

The food was great, offering a modern twist on classic Filipino dishes. Service was excellent, with friendly and attentive staff. The location and ambience were also very good, making for an enjoyable dining experience.
