My wife and I have been here several times before, and we brought some friends for a special treat. The service, which is always good, was above and beyond. The courses are always intricately prepared and presented - and delicious. This time, since we used a car service, we had the wine pairings to accompany. I would recommend this as an added bonus.
We have eaten at Arun's several times over the years and in the past we were never disappointed. Sadly, that was not the case on this visit. When we walked in, the restaurant was empty which was cause for concern especially on a Friday night. It began poorly with our early arriving guests being seated in another room for over 15 minutes before we discovered they were there. It should have been pretty easy to figure out that they were with us as they gave my name! Service was friendly but inept - the wrong wine was served twice and there were long periods of waiter absence. While the food was good, it was not outstanding especially for the very high price (about the same as Alinea - and no where near the experience and food there). The main courses are far too large and not very appealing, the “pretty food” we had known in the past is no longer extraordinary and, with a few exceptions, the flavors fell flat and very far from the unique tastes of the past. When there's a prix fixe service, there should never be large plates of food returned to the kitchen because of the size of the servings - and that's what happened. While we were full when we left, we were not very happy. We won't return.
The food was terrible. Over cooked proteins. Cocktails that didn’t work together.
A very disappointing experience
Went there for the first time with 3 other friends on a Wednesday night. It was quiet, I think there were only 2 other tables occupied, but that was good for us because we wanted to talk and catch up. The ambience is really cool. I was worried it would be something tacky Asian. It was actually very nicely designed inside. It was also very calming and relaxing. The food was delicious and fresh. There was nothing written about the dishes and the ingredients, so my friends were worried about not knowing what they are going to get. The waiter was very accommodating of our dietary restrictions, and we didn't have any issues with any of our dishes. We went with the 6 course, because it was our first time, and we weren't sure what it was going to be like. Next I go, I think i will try their standard 10-12 courses. It was that good. I would definitely go again.
I chose the 10-course menu, which was made of 10 everyday Thai dishes, beautifully presented. I was expecting to taste creative dishes and new flavors. I was disappointed.
my second time there and didn't disappoint. Service and food wonderful.
Five star for everything!
The only glitch in a perfect dinner was some miscommunication between our server and one of the partners.
But overall the food and wine were outstanding. The partner who helped us at first was terrific about the wine list and introduced us to a new favorite.
Arun also stopped by to say hello, which was a treat.
Arun’s is truly a spectacular dining experience. Be prepared to enjoy a very slow dining experience with amazing food and exceptional service. The menu is prefix and they offer a 10 or 12 course and we went with the 12. We started with delicious cocktails and the food can not really be put into words, way too intricate. It is on the high end especially with alcohol we also had a bottle of wine. If you really want a fine dining experience I highly recommend Arun’s ! I will share a photo not all just one so you can see the presentation.
The food and service are outstanding! All recipes are crafted with fresh ingredients and the plate presentations are a work of art. If you have not tried Arun’s I highly recommend it!
Went to the place third time now. Food was good and authentic.
Ambience was good however the place is too cold for comfort.
Also compulsory gratuity 20% is an overkill with the food expense
We felt disappointed with this restaurant, it is definitely overpriced and overvalued for what you get, I regretted going there for my last dinner in Chicago especially because we where expecting a high quality dinner that only resulted in common dishes with beautiful presentation, we could tell the ingredients where below the quality we expected for the price. I mean serving sriracha sauce in a restaurant that has an average spend of 75+ usd per person is completely unacceptable. The service was outstanding but the food unfortunately wasn’t. I wish I listened to the bad reviews because they are completely true If you are looking for outstanding food please avoid going to this place.
A 10 course experiance with fantastic visual food creations with a taste that goes hand in hand.
One of my fav restaurants in the world! Art masquerading as food. Makes any special occasion spectacular. Is expensive so we can’t make it a regular thing, tho we’d love to go once a month if we could.
Pricey, but wonder entries, cocktails and service.
Beautiful setting, attentive service, over priced.
Arun's is a special treat. George, our server, was lovely, helpful and fun. Every dish is beautifully presented and delicious. The place to go if you wish to surprise and wow someone!
Great service and wonderful food.
The food was outstanding, and George’s attentive and informative service, not to mention his sense of humor, made it a very special and memorable evening.
Visited years ago- when it was much better. Beautiful space- but majority of dishes were unmemorable, bland, cold, not fresh, not beautiful. Wine pairing tasted good with dishes- but came out already poured (so who really knew what they were serving- and who cares- none of it merited a second glance, would never buy any). Not at all worth the price.
We went for our sixteenth wedding anniversary. The service was great, and with the arrival of each thing they gave us a full description of what we were eating (it was a 10 course meal). Then at the end of the meal they gave us a delightful menu to take home of what we ate and a note that wished us a happy anniversary and our names on it. Each course was delightful and the drinks were delicious.
This is not your average Thai place (I think in Chicago with so many main stream, carry-out Thai places, we expect the same). This is an much elevated Thai experience that cannot be compared to any other, hence expect to pay more for the experience (it is worth every penny). The food is very creative and well presented. Service was very attentive. The 12-course option was excellent overall (and for two guys, it was very filling). We will be back.
Absolutely lovely 10 course dinner. So glad that could accommodate our dietary needs. Made our anniversary extra special.
AMAZING, delicious flavors and creations, and incredible service!! A foodie adventure!
Beautifully presented food which was delicious. Creative tasting menu which also had limited carbs - perfect for anyone trying to limit their intake of carbohydrates. My only comment was that it was a very expensive meal so would consider it a special occasion restaurant.
Simply Fantastic!! I had not been to Aruba for a while and that was a mistake. 20 years ago Charlie Trotter told he that Aruns was the only other restaurant he would suggest other than his own. He had a very good point!
It’s no wonder that Arun’s is part of the 1000 things to do before you die. Food was amazing! Well worth the cost. We tried the 12-course tasting menu and it was outstanding. Chef Arun really surprised us with the menu. This is not your average Thai food. The cuisine is authentic, not take out. Every course was so different and beautifully presented. We were blown away. George, our maitre’d, made us feel so welcome, and when it comes to pairing drinks with courses he really knows his wine and cocktails. He was so funny and attentive. He makes great cocktails. I had the Starting Gun. It was awesome! It was so nice to meet him. A few locals came in and they obviously knew him well. If you are looking for a unique food experience then go to Arun’s!
We went on a Sunday night and had a quiet dinner with impeccable service. Waiter was very knowledgeable about the dishes and paired wines. Each dish was a small piece of art. Waiter generous with his pours and allowed us to enjoy our wine in between courses so we didn’t feel rushed.
It was delicious! Would definitely recommend! The service was outstanding
Incredible take on Thai cuisine! The service was outstanding, each dish in the 12 course tasting menu was a revelation. Highly recommend the experience.
The food was nice, but it does not justify the price level due to a bad atmosphere (very “unclassy”) and bad location.
Everyday Thai meals with some fancy garnish carving at 10x the price. The waiter tried his hardest to glamorize dishes which are very common in Thai food fairs / kitchens. Nothing glamorous about it. We gasped at the $300.00 tab for two- w/o alcohol!
Perfect place if money doesn't matter and you enjoy empty restaurants on weekends.
This place is special. They have taken Thai food to a new level. Not only was the food good it was beautiful. Its not cheep but you pay for what you get. Keep in mind when you do a 8,10 or 12 course tasting menu you might not like everything but I would guess you will like most things. Also don't be in a big hurry. A meal like this will take a couple of hours. They also have wine pairings which we did not do.
Tried the 12 course, it was good, some items inconsistent.
The service was impeccable and the ambience perfect for a romantic or celebratory experience, and the cocktail and wine pairings were a highlight, but the food was underwhelming! Where was the heat? Where was the spice? Or if not that, then where was the flavor? There were maybe two exceptional dishes, but otherwise unmemorable food. We indulged in the lobster course, which was very expensive, but was neither a traditional buttery version, or a Thai version (which is what we were hoping for), plus it was chewy and unimpressive displayed.
If it wasn't so expensive, I wouldn't write a harsh review, but the $600 bill for two should have left me feeling completely impressed and blown away by deliciousness and unique flavors. I'm OK with spending good money for an exceptional experience, but the presentation (of food and service) at Arun's seemed a greater concern than the taste.
Overall excellent but felt that we were a bit rushed when our server poured our wine and served our first course while we were still sipping cocktails
Always a wonderful experience. I enjoy hosting friends who have not experienced Arun's before; it is magical!
Wonderful food. Really terrific. Great Service. But it all comes at a price. Not for the fiscally faint-of-heart.
Great quality and very flavorful. One of the best tasting menu experiences we've had in Chicago. They even gave us a special treat at the end to help us celebrate our special occassion, and were very attentive to my wife's dietary restrictions with flavorful and unique substitutions (not just removing items from the dish).
I would caution anyone who is thinking about dining at Arun's. For a prix fixe restaurant that promises an elevated dining experience, this restaurant fell well short. The food was mediocre, and the price was one of the highest I've paid in this genre. Food was served lukewarm, the quality of the ingredients was low, and I've had tastier thai food at my corner thai restaurant. I actually doubt whether a chef was on staff when we went, or whether they had a waiter assembling pre-cooked food before each course was brought out. At one point I was served a gristly piece of wagu beef. When I mentioned it to the waiter, I was not offered another piece of meat or anything to make up for the fact that one of the most pricey dishes on the menu was inedible. The staff was friendly, but the food was unacceptable. For an experience that is costly for almost anyone, this felt like a robbery.
