Arte Cafe Ratings and Reviews
We always go to Arte Cafe when we visit New York City. It's a warm, friendly neighborhood atmosphere.
The food is delicious. I had the special which was chicken breast
stuffed with cheese & spinach.
My husband always has the lasagna which is very moist & meaty.
The prices of the food & wine are very reasonable for New York.
we asked if we could move to a quieter spot....we were 2 people on a date sandwhiched between several large parties...2 of which had little and loud children. they moved us, slightly, but not out of that room...and we were still next to loud children and large groups. But the food here never disappoints me.
arte cafe has expanded its space to include a new room and many more tables, which is not a problem in itself -- the problem (i think) is that they have not developed their staffing to keep up with it. in any case, dinner service was loud and chaotic during our most recent visit. we had a reservation (of course) but had a long wait for a table, and another long wait to have our order taken. during these periods, we had ample opportunity to hear similar complaints from the customers around us, and to watch the staff running around in a flustered way and snapping at each other. one seemed close to tears. we live in the neighborhood and have been customers of arte cafe for many years, and we hope that the new(ish) management can work out these snags.
We did not know they had a price-fixed menu that at $15 was amazing...appetizer, main dish and dessert. The service was wonderful but as foodies I could say I was not satisfied...if this was the norm. However, for the price and for most people, it would be an affordable and pleasant dining experience.
We have eaten at Arte Cafe many times....
But this time our reserved table was in the bar, rather than main dining room.
The chairs and tables were at an uncomfortable height and the noise level was very high.
We had to wait 20 minutes for a table in the dining room.
There was a perfunctory apology from the owner/manager (?), who did not wait to hear about our issue or did not offer any "extra".
The wait staff seemed overworked and understaffed.
There are many fine restaurants on the Upper West Side.
This may have been our last visit to Arte.
My wife and I went to Arte a few weeks ago and loved it both food and service, so we booked for 6 including 4 guests. Food was great again but service was a non-stop string of negatives. Waitress was not going to tell us specials until we asked. First bottle of wine took a long time to arrive. One appetizer arrived 10 minutes after the others and only after continued prompting. Second bottle of wine didn't arrive until I grabbed the manager. We were sitting there with main dishes and empty wine glasses. Contorni never arrived so we cancelled them. One main dish arrived 10 minutes after the others. Guests on one side complained to the manager about crowding - he was essentially sitting in the aisle blocking it and my coat on the back of my chair was knocked to the floor twice. Guests on the other side gave up and left, then amusingly their dishes arrived 10 minutes later since the kitchen had no clue what had happened despite the manager's involvement. Bill came with automatic 20% tip included. One of us left a purse under the table. We called during intermission at theater and were told it was not there even after telling them the table number we had. We went back after the show and easily found the lost purse, so they obviously did not look for it. But the food was all great. My brother in law suggested they re-organize as take out and delivery to eliminate the service from the equation
Surprise. Went for an early dinner before a show at the Beacon Theatre. The 15.00 early bird menu was perfect. The Mussels in white wine & butter were plump and perfectly done, the Fettuccine al 3 fungi still has me wanting more and trying to figure out how to make it at home. The included desert a petit tiramisu was petite perfect & delicious. I was able to find three reasonably priced enjoyable bottles of wine. What more can you ask?
For Thanksgiving Dinner 2017. The food was perfectly DISGUSTING. A prix fixe Thanksgiving dinner of 4 courses. For my our first course, I ordered the artichoke salad. It was passable. One of my guests ordered the roasted butternut squash soup. It was flavorless and arrived lukewarm. Our second course was a choice between Gnocchi Gorgonzola or Pumpkin ricotta Cannelloni. We both chose the Cannelloni. These arrived two on a plate, the size of Band-Aids and the flavor as such too. Then came the Turkey, or the remnants of one....a few tattered pieces of the bird, inedible dark meat on top of the white over a minuscule portion of whipped sweet potatoes. The equally small portion of stuffing did have flavor but the cranberry sauce was runny and astringent. Lastly, for the dessert, for which we waited more than 20 minutes, you could not have cut a smaller piece of inferior pumpkin pie. Thanksgiving dinner is about abundance, variety and flavor. This meal failed miserably on all counts.
The food here is absolutely amazing and is worth the price, I think, but the service is terrible!!! Tons of people standing around and when you ask for something they just ask someone else and it takes super long... there was also this lady seated next to us who wouldn't stop screaming, we couldn't even have a conversation. Not the restaurants fault, but would've been helpful if they came by our table more instead of only talking with her. Again I'd go back because the food is really great, just a less than ideal atmosphere - I typically order for delivery through seamless bc of this.
The young man who bused our table was very nice, attentive and accommodating. The waiter was a bit indifferent - he had the vibe of an actor who was working to make some money that day. If it wasn't for the one who bussed the tables, I'd rate it lower on service. Example, when our salad and soup came to the table, the server asked if we wanted black pepper. I said yes. He disappeared and never came back. After about 5 minutes elapsed, I decided to ask someone else for black pepper. No one noticed that I did not start eating my salad because I was waiting for black pepper. And this was an early lunch, so the restaurant was not crowded. The young man who bused our table should be promoted.
What a horrible experience. We made reservations for 4 to eat after viewing the Thanksgiving Day balloon inflation. We were seated right away but that was the only thing that was quick. Drinks took forever. Couldn’t get anyone to make eye contact to order, for water, more bread. Appetizer was served after sitting 45 minutes. We missed out train home, despite telling our waiter. Every time we thought they were coming to us, the table before us would grab their attention with a question, they would tend to that table and leave without looking our way. I even resorted to calling out for assistance a few times but was ignored. To be fair the food was decent. I will never go back.
Love this restaurant, nice ambience, good bar.
The restaurant provides a nice atmosphere, nice menu, excellent cuisine, good table service. Nice happy hour of light bites and cocktails/wine.
A bit disappointing in that different wine selections were not available.
forget the Greek Diner; go directly to this restaurant before 5:45P and have an exceptional meal with good service, good bread, very good entrees - all served on a linen tablecloth with linen napkins - and - a free and delicious Tiramisu: 3 courses for $15.95!!! can you top that? let me know!
Came into the city met family and saw a movie. Made res for 4 at 7:30 which showed available. Was quite surprised our table was ready 40 minutes before we got there, how come you ask? Because it wS the worst table in the place next to 3 kids next to the old service area. This table should not be part of the open table service, leave it for a walk-in without a res. We declined the table and waited 40 minutes for another table the bar that only has one pinot noir to offer! now we were seated right behind the wall of the hostess first table in the dining room with blasting heat from above vent. We waited at least 5 minutes before the waiter came to give us menus. We hailed the manager to shut the heat which we were glad or we would have left. The room was very noisy and full to capacity. food was just okay, average at that. I won’t rush back here.
While the service started a bit rushed; it slowed to a more leisurely enjoyable pace. While some people might come here for a fast meal, we were there for a longer, slow meal and, without having to say anything, the tempo of the service changed to reflect this. I thought that the wait staff did a great job and we felt relaxed and able to enjoy ourselves. The meal was delicious and portion-wise was plenty. You could share two apps and along with main courses and be quite satisfied. I would definitely come here again.
