Trying to be fair here during the pandemic - so many restaurants are hurting for chefs and staff. But this was especially disappointing. The margheretta pizza for appetizer was fine. But the entrees - pasta with ricotta and eggplant, chicken Parmesan and grilled calamari salad - were no better than any diner. The calamari was so rubbery, and the salad so soggy, that it was truly inedible and had to be sent back. Waitstaff was apologetic and did remove it from the bill. We used to like Arte Cafe. Won’t be going back.
Worst service ever. No one ever came to the table. Had to literally go to the hostess to get any help 45 min later. Avoid this place.
Used to be great. Made a reservation on a Jewish holiday knowing that would assure a parking spot outside and quieter inside. Called before arriving to say I may be late, but was left on hold for 25 minutes. I disconnected the call after the long wait.
The service was not great considering it was quite. Seemed very unpolished, didn’t refill waters nor offer bread. Our food was not as good as used to be. My calamari was served cold and the ceaser salad over dressed . My steak was expensive - not worth the money, the spinach seemed like a frozen store brand, not fresh by any means, it was bland BUT the fries were very good, like they used to be.
I don’t mind spending money especially for a special occasion. We looked forward to the evening out. I have to say I feel taken advantage of and disappointed and embarrassed by the fact my quest said they saw a big mouse running by the base board. So, I won’t be going back EVER. ☹️
Arte has been one of my favorite neighborhood restaurants for many years. I am so happy they have survived the pandemic. Last evening's meal with friends was truly celebratory. The food, as always, was wonderful and the service was excellent. We sat in the garden, very quiet, nice atmosphere
Great neighborhood place! We go often and always enjoy ourselves.
it’s my go to place
the food is always good and reasonably priced
The service was almost non-existent and the food was over-cooked and brought out while we we still having our salad. We event could find the waitress for our check! I've been there in the past and it was good. 👍 This was terrible except for the outdoor garden space.
We go to Arte frequently and when not sitting outdoors, like to sit in the patio, because it's (usually) fairly quiet and lovely. Not so last night!!
There was a party of 14 middle aged men sitting not far from us who made so much noise with their yelling and cheering that a party of 10 people also sitting nearby asked to be moved to indoor seating!! That this loud, in considerate party of 14 wasn't given or asked to sit in a private area was so unacceptable to me and my husband and friends, all of whom are in our 70s and 80s and were hoping to have a lovely, quiet meal together. If they weren't asked to move to a private area, the owner should have at least asked them to keep down the noise and didn't. Our dinner was, unfortunately, less enjoyable because of it. There were more than 14 other people (the rest of the diners in the patio) who were annoyed and inconvenienced by these men's boisterous behavior.
I wish I could give 0 stars. Avoid at all costs. TLDR, horrible service, terrible food, and absolutely tragic management.
To start, the “Garden” was an enclosed brick room with a junky clear plastic roof, crammed with noisy birthday parties and kids running around. We asked to move outside.
Once there, it took 15 minutes for a waiter even to come to us, 15 more minutes to get drinks, and 15 more minutes to get cold (and totally disappointing) appetizers (avoid the arancini and meatballs - both are horrible. But also just never go here).
We didn’t get our entrees until an hour and 30 minutes after we got there and only could get one drink and two horrible appetizers in that time. The entrees were cold, so we refused to accept them.
Server was total absent and multiple tables near us had to go up to the hostess to ask for help.
I asked to speak with the owner who had moved from the front to hiding in the back due to so many tables complaining. When I told him we were having an awful experience, he quibbled with me about the temperature of our entrees.
I get that it’s COVID, everyone is short staffed, etc. but this is truly the WORST NYC dining experience I’ve ever had. EVER. And the very worst part was the owner/manager who was completely unwilling to take responsibility.
For future potential patrons’ sake, I hope this atrocity of New York dining goes the way of the dodo bird and we can have a better option in its place on the UWS.
Always a good time at Arte. Happy to see this neighborhood institution thriving.
This was my first visit to Arte Cafe. I was pleased to see that I was required to wear a mask and that my vaccination status was checked upon arrival! I started my meal with a margarita and asked that it be made sweet. When it was served, the woman waiting on me asked if it was sweet enough. It was very nice that she asked it was satisfactory. When I told her it was not, she promptly made a new one that was wonderful! I ordered the crab cakes over mushroom hot salad and found it very tasty. For dessert I had the chocolate lava cake with vanilla ice cream. It was warm and wonderful. At each serving, I was asked if the dish was satisfactory. The service was warm and attentive. The restaurant offered indoor seating as well as an attached covering seating area and a detached one on the sidewalk. Lots of options!
For a local neighborhood restaurant, the food was surprisingly good. I had a mixed salad first and a pasta dish. Delicious! Great service. Sat in the covered patio in the back of the restaurant with two friends and we had a great time. Will definitely return.
Good food. Good drink. Good conversations. Ate outside and a bit removed to an area with a table of six. Waiter was still attentive. Definitely recommend and will return.
Request for outdoor seating honored
Table for eight waiting for us
Combination of the fried calamari and Caesar salad with a bottle of red wine was a good start. Followed up with pasta and chicken served perfectly. Service was very attentive and professional.
Great food and service. Like everything in the City, restaurant food has gotten really expensive. Otherwise, I love this place
Consistently excellent; my top choice for shared enjoyment of food and experience when it counts!
Ambience was nice and service was great… Food, not so much. Mediterranean salad was pretty basic, grilled calamari just OK… I’ve had better. Then for entrée we had branzino and swapped out the veggies for broccoli rabb. The fish had zero taste and the broccoli raab wasn’t cooked enough and was very tough. 🤷🏻♀️ Oh well…
Enjoyed the back patio space. Food was good but ordinary.
Didn't seem to have enough help.
The food was cooked perfectly and delicious. The service was just the right pace. The price value is perfect as everything was pleasant and a good Saturday night experience!
What a disappointment! We were visiting from Boston and wanted to celebrate our 44th anniversary here. We arrived 20 minutes early and someone at the restaurant said, “We open at 12. See you then.” How nice would it have been if they said, “We know it’s hot today. Feel free to have a seat until we open.” We returned, said we reserved online (where I mentioned our anniversary) and were seated. Bellinis were ordered and they were good. I asked the server what type of bread was served with the egg breakfast, he said he’d find out. I said, “ not white, I hope.” He never returned with an answer. Sure enough…one piece of white toast AND it was the heel of the loaf!! I wouldn’t serve that to overnight guests! I mentioned it to him and he just shrugged. No mention was ever made of our anniversary. Even a complimentary scone would have been nice. Time to find a new place for brunch.
Service was wonderful- attentive and friendly. My “go to” restaurant. And all our entrees were delicious .
Great food, love the garden in the back, a lovely surprise and nice to have fans moving the air around too. Had to go find the waiter a few times as we were tucked in the back. All things else was lovely!
Terrific evening and wonderful neighborhood spot. Good food, good service, lovely garden.
Fabulous service. Backyard is lovely relaxing environment. Great martini.
Excellent always. Such a great location near the Beacon Theater. Food, Drinks and Service always excellent. Will return again.
FOOD IS GOOD, SERVICE NOT SO MUCH
Definitely a go-to restaurant for locals and visitors. The diversified menu offering everything from pizza to beautifully cooked entrees, moderately priced wines by the glass, and attentive service make it a special dining experience. The attractive street-side dining and garden offer many sitting options. Well worth a visit. We are planning a family birthday celebration there.
I love coming here
I was surprised the salad on the side of the eggs was wilted and inedible
You can do better
I would recommend Arte Cafe to a friend. Service was good, Food was real good and reasonably priced.
Always enjoy their outdoor garden especially when hardly anyone else is there. My favorite dish is their eggplant parm that I get with some broccoli with garlic. The service is always a bit off but doable.
The food was good but the service was abysmal-not because they were busy
Lovely restaurant inside and also does a very nice job with outdoor dining. Food and staff are terrific. Every single thing we have ever had there has been enjoyed. The social distancing is plesant and safe as well. Very comfortable and enjoyable place.
Waited one and a half hours for food to come without the waitress coming over even once to apologize or give a status. Spoke to manager who seemed incredulous but still did nothing. We left without food. Too bad because it used to be a nice place to go.
Great restaurant, would definitely return.
A relaxed and delicious meal shared with friends in a lovely garden setting on a Summer’s evening was delightful!
Cocktails and cheese platter were great! Pasta dishes were lacking flavor and our server disappeared.
A steadfast institution of the neighborhood, Arte Cafe is the perfect long weekend lunch.
Excellent food and cordial, outstanding service. We went to Arte for brunch. They were very accommodating to my friend's request of sitting far away from other people (her first time dining at a restaurant since the pandemic) and gave us a perfect outdoor table in a section by ourselves! The staff couldn't have been nicer, as we lingered long after finishing our meal, and there was no pressure to leave. This was always one of my favorite restaurants before the pandemic, and I will continue to return again and again.
