I have been going to Armandos for years. My visit this time was disappointing. The redfish was way too garlicky, the beans oily and the service was very slow. We had a hard time getting our drink order placed as well as our order. I am hoping it was just an off night.

We brought my daughter for her birthday. We'd indicated on the reservation that we were there to celebrate a birthday, and they brought her cake with a sparkler, unannounced. She was entranced. Before the cake, we mainly ate a lot of appetizers - shrimp cocktail (really more like ceviche, with nicely seasoned red sauce and lots of avocados), queso, and steak nachos. Theirs are some of the best nachos anywhere; the steak is definitely higher quality than the usual fajita meat. The chips are also some of the best - thick and crispy, served with a warm (temperature) tomato sauce. And the margaritas are excellent - lots of choices.
We shared some of the food, and did not run up an especially big tab, but the service was always thoughtful.

The food was mediocre Tex Mex. Drinks very overpriced —$15 + per drink—almost the price of an entree! The place is beautiful inside but truly it was one of the noisiest restaurants I have been to. I would not return.

Service was excellent and food was great. For some reason, it was extra noisy that night to the point of we could not hear each other talk at a table of 4!

While I loved my ceviche and the special beet salad. My enchiladas were as any other. My friend ordered cheese enchiladas vegetarian with the red sauce. They were exceptional. But you had to yell at each other to be heard. Noisy beyond comfort. What's the point? I guess Carolyn Farb sitting at the next table made it a seen and be seen scene! Life's short good food and a place to talk is much more desirable.

My husband and I have been to Armando's many times and have been pleased with both the service and food. My brother was in town visiting from London and misses tex-mex cuisine so we try to take him out to as many Mexican and Tex-Mex restaurants as possible while he's here. This time we noticed, as well as my brother, that our server was being much more attentive to the other tables and quiet short with ours -all the other tables he was waiting on were seated with Caucasian people. My brother and I are Latino and unfortunately have seen this happen before at other lesser quality places -but I NEVER thought it would happen at a place my husband and I have gone to several times before. As much as I wanted to believe that I was just overreacting, it was just so overwhelmingly obvious that he wanted to treat his white guests better and with more attention than us. That's pretty sad. I've worked in the service industry before and I know there can be a perception -especially when it comes to gratuity. I guess he got his wish as we weren't going to tip our usual 20% for poor service. There are so many other tex-mex places in Houston with good margaritas, why would we waste time here? We will never be back.

There are too many texmex in Houston to like Armandos. If you prefer real mex, Caracol or Hugo should be well above on your list and if you really want the texmex fares, I had better food and nicer service at Pappasitos. Texmexmex i would go to Pico's.
The starters were actually excellent but the main were utmost disappointing. I had to order an additional serving of onion and cilantro for my main, as they were absent from my dish despite being on the menu. Even with this, it was insipid. The salsa roja was a lame watery tomato onion mix, not a hint of a spice.
Armando's was for me what Damian's is to Italian food: the Americanized 80s version of texmex, an Americanized textexmex. Would fit perfectly in a Kansas suburb but not in Houston anymore.

Wow, what a great restaurant. Great food and the 15+ different Margarita's is unmatched from any other restaurant in Houston with the same menu profile. Mr. Hector Ortega introduced himself and it quickly seemed like we were old friends. Just a great restaurant that gives you more than you will expect.

Wonderful as always! This Houston establishment never disappoints. I have developed a severe wheat and rye allergy and the server was helpful in navigating what I could eat. We were very well taken care of and our Spaniard friends loved it!

We were seated in the bar area which turned out to be lucky because the noise level of the regular dining area was quite loud. At the bar area table, I could hear my husband well. Our reservation was for 8:15 but we arrived early and they were able to seat us immediately. The food was excellent. I had the tuna tacos which needed a little more spice, but were interesting and tasty. The margaritas were as good as reviewed here before I went. Excellent, smooth, not bitter, margaritas. I had a steak and husband had the acclaimed mole. He has had better mole, this was a bit too sweet for his taste, but still, very good. The steak was fantastic with a rich flavor and perfectly cooked over grilled onions. The tres leches was so good we inhaled it. Overall, a great experience and I would go there again and ASK for the bar seating as I like to hear my dinner companion. The wait staff also should be commended as superb. Our every wish was satisfied and he was timely. I also liked that there was 1 waiter instead of a team, which I prefer as I know who is taking care of us. I wish I remembered his name to commend him. One note of thanks to the hostess, who, noticing I had on a black dress, offered to give me a black napkin instead of a white one. That was the first impression I had of the restaurant, so I knew it was going toe a great experience. So positives were the food quality, service, drinks and also I would rate the decor very highly. Another positive, this is a great place to people watch. Negative was the noise, but we were able to overcome it by being in the bar area (better acoustics there, I suppose). We arrived early enough not to have to valet park, so I suppose parking availability would be a negative as well. Overall LOVED IT!!!!

Our first visit here. Great drinks and appetizers. We had the mixta appetizer and it was wonderful! My husband had the ribeye enchiladas which were not what he thought they would be. It was 2 cheese enchiladas with a ribeye steak. He thought it would be Ribeye steak int he enchilada. I had the lobster enchiladas which were ok. Great spot for people watching. Next time I think we will just stick to the appetizers as they were filling enough.

Well I don't think I've ever been to a Mexican food restaurant that was pretentious but now I have.
Gorgeous interior, impeccable service but silly. Their salsa was in bowls with spoons. Why? I looked around and everyone was spooning the salsa onto a small plate and then trying to get it on to their chips. It was hilarious. Everyone dressed in their finest being snooty eating Mexican food. It was quite a show.
The food was average at best. I have cheese enchiladas with chili con carne. It looked like a very shallow bowl of chili covered with a dense mat of cheese. The enchiladas would show up in a bite every once in a while. It might be the highest calorie dish I have ever eaten.
It's worth going just for the experience but don't expect much of the food.
Silly silly place.

Hadn't been in ages, but it's still the same as it ever was, which is a good thing. It's not perfect, but like an old friend I haven't seen in a while, I'm really glad it's still there.

I had forgotten how much I like the menu. If you're looking for good, old-school upscale TexMex, hoity-toidy RO crowd people-watching, and the hefty (but not obscenely so) price tag that necessarily goes with all of that, it's pretty hard to beat Armando's.

If, however, you want good solid TexMex that's a lot cheaper with a far less preppy crowd, go next door to Chuy's, or any of the countless places at least as good around town.

I'm told the cougars still prowl in the tee-ninecy bar late at night, but I didn't stick around to watch. Keep meaning to, but can't stay up that late anymore.

Now the bad news: I was a little shocked that they charged me $2 to add jalapenos to my tacos al carbon. I had reservations, but it took them a while to get me seated, and the food came out really slowly, but they apologized, so I'm good. The entry way/waiting area/bar makes me claustrophobic. It's like being in a phone booth with a dozen other people.

The main reason I don't go more often is because I'm too fat to eat Mexican food in general. I invariably consume one meal's worth of calories in chips and salsa on top of a relatively high-calorie (but really good) meal. I know I can refuse the chips, but I also know I won't.

Dinner at Armandos was an enjoyable experience. The food was excellent. Highlights were the ceviche special with watermelon radish and the Chile Relleno. The wine list boasted a lovely Malbec, Nice, from the Houston's Nice Winery. Delicious!
The atmosphere of the restaurant was warm and inviting with an upscale clientele. Close to downtown, mid-town, Montrose & River Oaks.
We were seated at a corner booth which allowed us privacy but still able to people watch!
Excited to return!
