Archetype Ratings and Reviews
Truly enjoyed my first visit and happy to have made it here. The dining room at Archetype in St. Helena is mesmerizing, the service is flawless, and the food and drinks are even better.
The restaurant is adjacent to the St. Helena Post Office on Main Street, across from Lyman Park, and hard to miss.
We ordered their Full Stack Lemon-Ricotta Pancakes and Corned Beef Shortrib Hash (with roasted brussel sprouts, soft onions, and poached eggs) on our first visit and truly cannot wait to return. The pancakes were the best I've had in recent memory and their Espresso drinks were exceptional. Impossible to leave this place without smiling.
The wine list by the glass was limited to three wines for each. The food was okay but not outstanding. The check with only one glass of wine, two entrees, a side of potatoes and one dessert and coffee was $85 plus tip. We see no reason to go back given the over very fine restaurants for lunch or brunch for less or the same cost.
Saturday Brunch - very warm and inviting wait staff and ambiance. So many choices for brunch. Lemon ricotta pancakes were amazing and delivered hot off the griddle. The crispy potatoes lived up to their name, and were nicely spiced as well. I could see the steam from the over easy eggs across the table. The cinnamon roll was oversized and too much for two. Don’t miss the freshly squeezed juices. Orange was a bit sweet for me, but the grapefruit was perfect. The heated bench seat in the porch was most toasty on a chilly morning!
The interior design of this restaurant is beautiful and on trend but the food leaves you longing for more. The menu looks great with thoughtful descriptions of the food and amazing ingredients. It was plated beautifully but there was no complexity of flavor in anything we had. I kept reaching for the salt but there wasn't any on the table. Our server was less than helpful too. I love going into a restaurant I've never tried before and have the server tell me about the menu and what dishes they are known for. None of that happened, he was distracted and had zero friendliness or personality. We ended our meal with cappuccinos and donuts. Coffee was so so bad. It tasted as if they had burnt the milk or espresso or both. The donuts were just ok. I had high hopes for Archetype but don't waste your time. So many other better choices in the valley
We were excited to eat brunch but the menu is kind of strange with trying to order something that sounded good other than basic eggs. The coffee was excellent. It came right away. But it took forever for the waitress to come back & take our order. I noticed other people seated nearby who started complaining to nearby busboys they were still waiting for a long ago ordered drink(s). I asked the hostess if she would let our server know we were ready as she sat people behind us. Then the server just kept going to newly seated tables to take their drink orderes, & would swiftly disappear. Finally I waved her down after sitting there for over 20 minutes telling her we were starving. After an even longer wait, 2 of our entrees came out but not the 3rd. In fact it never came out & we were more than half way done. Finally flagged down another server that was walking around because our server never came back. He said he would go check. Then our server came back to see how everything was & we told her the entree never came & hubby wasn’t too happy. Finally it came out, but the experience was lacking in service & attention. It seemed like the waitress was given way more tables than she could handle both out on the patio & inside. But also I think the kitchen was either short handed or slow because all the surrounding tables seemed to have to wait forever. Plus my omelette was not hot when it arrived. We will not be going back.
Really beautiful spot with great menu choices for brunch; the corned beef hash and the breakfast sandwich were both outstanding, as were the maple sugar donut holes and the deviled eggs. The biscuit and gravy was a bit too much of a departure from the traditional for my tastes, but still good if you like lamb and quite rich. Very tasty Bloody Mary and delicious cappuccino. Really loved the vibe and aesthetic, lots of light and uber-comfortable seating. Definitely recommend for a great meal where you can visit with friends without a lot of noise.
Interesting restaurant serving brunch on a weekday. The choices were perhaps restricted on the vegetarian options but what we chose was very good to excellent. (Great Merguez by the way for people who love these lamb sausages). The service was wonderful and the decor and surrounding comfortable.
We both opted for the Restaurant Week lunch, and ordered the beet salad and avocado toast with fish. The presentation and accompanying wines were great. However, we both remarked that the beets in the salad had no flavor--too bland. We loved the goat cheese and the greens.
I found the toast somewhat difficult to cut. Part of my fish ended up on the tabled when my knife slipped.
Very pleased with the comfortable and cozy dining atmosphere. The indoor fireplace was welcoming. Came here with my girlfriends for a Saturday brunch. We loved everything Archetype offered. Their take on waffles is awesome - the waffles with pork belly is absolutely scrumptious; paired with their Bloody Mary made for a perfect brunch.
Archetype has never disappointed and is always a stop for when we are in Napa. On this occasion we went for brunch and it there was not a single plate that left that was not delightfully consumed :). Yes to the Kale salad with almond dressing, cheddar biscuits in gravy, lemon-ricotta pancakes... Beautiful diningroom that is rustic and modern and unfussy.
Went for Sunday brunch for table of 2. Got French 75s to start off the meal. Got the half sandwich/soup, specifically fried chicken sandwich and butternut squash soup, and the Norwegian eggs. The eggs were pretty standard, above average. The sandwich was delicious, loved the beet. Butter nut squash soup was also well done. Lovely restaurant interior and very relaxing atmosphere. I recommend sitting indoors instead of outdoors. Service was a bit lacking, our waitress took long to take our order, we didn't get water until we asked for it, etc. But overall very good value and ambience.
Food was very good. There are a lot of exceptional restaurants in the area, so it is difficult to stand out, but Archetype is definitely competitive. Wines by the glass list was a bit lackluster. Environment is cozy, but bright and cheerful. Service is attentive and friendly. Would recommend, but not on my "must-do" list.
Food was good. Service was terrible. It took an hour and 20 minutes to get our meal. Our waitress did not come to the table to check on us or give us the status of our dinner. After waiting about an hour I was able to flag her down asking her to check on our meal as also asking her to bring over some bread as we were drinking our wine on empty stomachs. Without our asking the manager removed the dinner charges from our bill. At that point it was to last to salvage the evening. We were never told what the problem was.
We have dining many many times over the past 5 years. We stayed away when the chef and management team was replaced some time back. Decided to give them another chance. Same comfortable environment. Food was delicious, well prepared and presented. Kale Salad, NY Steak, Tuna were perfect. Service was lacking. Way too slow for everything from wine service onward. As far as we could see everyone had bread at their tables, when we asked for bread, after we received our salads we were skoldied, "Bread I on Request Only". That's what I was asking for bread please. The waitress finally recognized things did not go well for us and did apologize. All that being said; I would definitely return for the food, not sure if we will return based on the poor service.
Really disappointing considering it was our second visit. The chicken was not cooked, meat was undercooked, the servers description of the entree was not even close, we waited way too long for our second round of drinks and the smoke from the kitchen was horrible. Manager reimbursed us for 1.5 meals and gave us dessert but unfortunately all of the above ruined our experience. We will not go back.
