About this restaurant

  • Neighborhood gem
  • Good for special occasions
  • Great for creative cocktails
This second restaurant from acclaimed chef Stephen Gillanders does not disappoint. At Apolonia, Gillanders skillfully explores the rich flavors of the Mediterranean with the same creative flair so many have come to love at S.K.Y., proving that all good things are worth the wait.

From start to finish, everything was amazing. -Cyclopes cocktail, was super tasty and different – a great way to begin. -Harissa Spiced Lamb Skewer was perfectly cooked and the Octopus de Bourgogne was incredibly tender and delicious -Fiorentini al Sugo was rich and comforting, there was a nice smokiness to the sauce and the pasta was very tender

Food was delicious. The broiled oysters were fantastic, same with the Halibut, blue crab bucatini and the gnocchi ragu. But the absolute show stopper were the desserts! We ordered three and they were all amazing. Will go back again and again.

The food? Excellent. The Roasted Mussel Toast was a buttery, chili-spiked bite of heaven, and the Grilled Branzino with olive sauce was the kind of dish that makes you pause mid-chew just to appreciate it. The decor is modern and understated... very "cool without trying too hard." The service, on the other hand, felt like it was moving in slow motion. We finished all our starters before anyone circled back to take our wine order. Not exactly the pacing you hope for at this price point. Also, not loving the surprise 5% “employee benefits” fee tacked on at the end. I’m all for supporting staff, but maybe just fold it into the already upscale menu prices instead of springing it on me with the bill. Overall, a tasty meal, but next time, I might opt for takeout and my own wine pour.

I was really hoping to enjoy this restaurant because I live relatively close and like to support local businesses. However, it was a mixed experience and I don’t need to go back. We started out having the roasted muscle toast, which was delicious-the chili butter made this dish special. The harissa spice lamb skewer had very little flavor which was very unexpected given I love harissa and tzatziki. The branzino was swimming in oil at the bottom of the dish and it was too charred. The gnocchi with Wagyu brisket ragu was delicious- best dish of the evening. We shared a chocolate dessert which had crust that was a little dry. Wait staff were pleasant, but we waited a very long time for alcoholic beverages and for our entrees. Might be a good place if you at McCormick Place and want walk to a restaurant that could accommodate a relatively large group of people. Otherwise, I doubt this restaurant will ever be a favorite “go to” for locals.

Amazing food in a minimalist, relaxed space. The room was full of warm light. The drinks were delicious, and the food was amazing. We especially loved the brussels sprouts and kale salad and the cheescake baclava desert and the blue crab bucatini was also so fresh and seasonal. The pacing was a bit slow at times, but we weren't in a rush and really enjoyed our time here. Crowd was unusual given AC/DC show at Soldier Field later in the evening. But the people watching was nice.

Wonderful experience. They helped us celebrate a special occasion and were gracious even as we were the last party to finish brunch that afternoon. Highly recommend.
