More than a meal, an amazing experience. Service was fantastic. The food was expertly and exquisitely prepared and presented. Short rib tacos, “alphabet” soup, green beans fried in an almond coating, breaded and lightly fried cauliflower, totopos—each bite, better than the last. Don’t skip dessert. Pistachio ice cream cake with Campeche and cream. Wow.

Disappointing Experience at Animal-Masaryk Mexico City is home to some of the world’s best restaurants, and I was excited to try Animal-Masaryk after it came highly recommended. Unfortunately, my experience fell short of expectations. I was in town celebrating a special promotion, and as my guest and I waited to place our order, something quite strange happened, a random server walked by our table, reached for my glass of wine without a word, and took it, leaving the second wine glass untouched. He then walked off and handed it to another table. Just moments later, the section captain (or manager) came by and asked if we’d like to try a wine they were promoting. Still visibly confused, I asked how I could possibly sample the wine when my glass had just been taken away without explanation, and neither our food nor drink order had been taken yet. The captain seemed just as puzzled and apologized, quickly having a new glass brought out. The random server then returned and casually explained that he “assumed” we weren’t having wine and took the glass for another table. This didn’t sit right with me, especially since he left the second glass and didn’t say a word. I had actually been examining the wine list, as I planned to order a bottle in celebration of the occasion. As someone who dines out and travels frequently, I found this to be a first. In most professional establishments, servers either ask before clearing anything or wait until the order is placed. I generally overlook small service hiccups, but for a restaurant of this caliber, the lack of coordination and communication was disappointing.
