Amazing overall dining experience! First time guest and took some out of town friends. Even one way blown away from the attention of the staff to the taste profile of the food to the restaurant ambiance. Our waiter was so patient and guided us in the right direction when navigating the menu. We got to try amazing new things- ahi tuna and tomato jelly, grilled radicchio- and try some house specialities- whole bbq chicken- without having too much food. Save room for desert and don’t second guess that soft serve sundae. Highly recommend for special occasions!

Carefully prepared...I had the raw scallops and it was perfectly accented with the diced apples...I could have eaten a dozen more.
The fresh bread and butter was amazing...they also give these tasty peppers which are so flavorful.
Didn’t try desert but the sundae looked very good!

Salty antelope tartare, salty crudo and an overcooked quail. I felt like I was eating cat hair..... Serving staff either hate their jobs or they're just unhappy and don't want to interact with the guest.
Fantastic service. Look, you're not eating at Long John Silver's so be prepared to spend some bank. Is it over priced? Of course. Is it good? Yes, very good and the fish is exceptionally fresh. Oysters were top nothing. Big Eye tuna was so-so. I'd go back but only sit at the bar. Ask for a table looking out along the Embarcadero towards the Bay Bridge.
This restaurant is a caricature of itself. It felt as though I had been dropped onto the set of a comedic movie in which each actor was directed to give the most over-the-top performance and the entire theme of the restaurant was designed as a farcical hoax summed up in a caption for a newspaper review I found online: "Make everything taste as much like itself as physically possible." Huh? $15 for bread and butter? A glass of wine for $68? Seriously? And all a very short stone's throw from an urban parklet teeming with homeless people. This restaurant takes itself way too seriously. It's sad to see the level of pretension to which San Francisco has risen in the hands of a bunch of uber-wealthy techies. I've been a foodie for decades and have lived in the San Francisco Bay Area for two of the last three decades, but I have never felt so thoroughly fleeced by an overpriced hipster spot in my entire life and I've eaten at Michelin star restaurants in the U.S. and Europe. Was the food great? Sure. But the pricing and pretension are beyond obnoxious on a block where people are sleeping on sidewalks. I would say this felt more like a dystopian future flick, but that future is now in present-day San Francisco.

The reviews were good including recommendations from chef pals. We arrived on time, table wasn't ready, no big deal, some burgundy cremant was offered up.
We were expecting the level of pricing as the restaurant is pitched at the comfortably well off, that are after a high end but casual dining experience.
Wine list is fabulous if you are into rare Burgundy and have the wallet to cope with it. The two pages that interested us most on the wine list were titled "flying under the radar". Modern wines from winemakers who are far away from industrial or the elite wine writers protected interests.
We had the embers grilled petral sole. It came massively under-cooked and running bloody. It was whisked away and replaced 10 minutes later with a perfectly cooked version. Meanwhile we were sort of hungry and started on our side dishes. One repeat side dish was brought back with the new fish.
There wasn't too much explanation from anyone responsible front of house. Our waiter did a good job working his way through the messed up food sequence.
Dessert was a fabulous smoky caramel and ultra creamy sundae.
Would I recommend Angler to friends? I would tell them our experience without a recommendation.
It is a restaurant nicely pitched for the type of crowd that packed the place late on a Saturday. Its only April, but I have had more inspiring meals at restaurants in London, Paris and in San Francisco this year. Restaurants that come in on half the budget here, are very seasonal focused and know what a modern wine list looks like.
I enjoyed the quirkiness of the restaurant design. You can tell they thought about every small detail. Service was pretty spot on except for a few minor things. I enjoyed the food - our favorites were the hen of the woods mushroom and the soft serve. We ordered the quail as one of our entrees and while it was super delicious, it was ultimately too much effort to cut up and share. There was no dish I didn’t enjoy, but if I went back, there may be 1 or 2 things I might not order again but primarily because there would be new things to try! We really enjoyed the cocktails, especially the Cutloose.
Beautiful setting on the Embarcadero. Comfortable room viewing the open kitchen and wood burning grills and ovens. Excellent fresh oysters, inventive locally sourced appetizers and salads and terrific fresh seafood and other entrees. Great service throughout. Excellent list of wines by the glass and a spectacular wine list. Highly recommended.
the simplicity and creativity of the dishes is what makes this place so special . impeccable service probably the BEST wine list in SF

Excellent ambiance, but food did not meet expectations.
Service was genuinely bad. Our food was good but definitely over salted. Love the view and wish the overall experience had been more reminiscent of the wonderful dinner we had at Saison.
The menu changes often, so it’s hard to give a recommendation... but you really can’t go wrong with any of the dishes. The dishes are well crafted (I guess you can call it “elevated rustic”) and excellently prepared. We had such a fantastic time, the service was great, and the ambiance is really lovely. If you can sit near the kitchen, I recommend it! Will be back again soon.

Way too expensive for the tiny little portions they give you. Went home really hungry after a $300+ meal for two. Cool space and great service though!
Potatoe and sea bass dish are the best
I booked a reservation after reading a review in the NY Fishwrap's Food Section where it was touted as the most anticipated new restaurant on the culinary scene. The ambience of the dining room does NO justice to the food with dead stuffed fish and mammal heads on the wall. The experience was like sitting in a bar of a chain food establishment, non stop loud 80's Disco Music blared overhead. The menu was small with only 4 main entrees offered. The smaller plates were ingenious and well executed.
I would not return until they do an engine rebuild!
Angler for a special occasion at the request of my guest who reads reviews. I chose a Sunday evening as it's usually a more relaxed and authentic dining experience.
The venue was attractive, active, but not particularly jammed. This was as expected...but then downhill from there.
Service was horrendous. Distracted, non attentive. Lots of bodies in attendance, but still waited uncomfortably long time to be approached initially and any followup service interaction was the same.
I pre ordered (stress this) a "very cold" Riesling 1/2 bottle with a shellfish appetizer. Shellfish platter was brought out before the wine was served. Platter lacked the clams we ordered. We sat there watching the shellfish ice melt for a bit. Still no waiter or wine. I then asked for the wine.
Bottle was brought to table- "warm". We finished platter before wine was even actually served.
"Angler"- A fish restaurant? Only two actual fish entrees (vs shellfish) on main course menu that evening- they did not have either at 8:00 serving- that's us!
We ate what we could. Wish I could at least have a positive food comment, but not impressed in any way with a tiny grilled lobster for $70 or $15 per single sea scallop entree.
We smiled and made the best of it.
Asked for the check and got out of there.
To sum it up. Not a value. Nothing special. Just over priced.
I could not connect my experience to the reviews or accolades Angler has received.
Seemed like a joke.

What a fabulous dining experience! I had a lot of expectations after reading that it’s named the best newest restaurant in the nation by Esquire & a finalist for the 2019 James Beard Foundation award for Best New Restaurant. They delivered in every level....excellent food, top notch service from Mason & the rest of the wait staff, beautiful space, great cocktails, nice music selection ! I can’t wait to go back this coming Friday with another set of friends!
The scallop was the best scallop I've ever had. The chicken was good, but for all the hype seemed unexciting. The wine list was excellent. The smoke flavor in several dishes from the open fire (primarily the smoked butter used for some of the sea food) was amazing.
Food and service was impeccable. The attention to detail was amazing. The view I had overlooking the Bay Bridge was an added bonus. Each person I spoke with had knowledge of the menu and made fantastic auggestions. From start to finish I felt as if I was the only person being served, while the places was packed. One of the best overall dining experiences I’ve had on the West Coast, coming from a person who had dined in some prime restaurant locations in NY. It deserves any accolades coming its way, I’m hoping not to jinx it. Thank you!!
Tasty inventive food. Worth the expense. Service was excellent, although our main waiter was a little earnest. Loved that they didn’t rush you through dinner so they could turn the table over.
We loved everything we ordered from cocktails to appetizers to petrole sole and porter house, and finally to desserts. Lovely and intimate ambiance. We will definitely go back and try other dishes.
Angleris a game-changer. Innovative, rustic comfort food that is also sophisticated and full of flavor. This is what sets San Francisco apart from many other cities. A true pioneer.

Though expensive, the food was quite good and at times even memorable (particularly crudo selections from the raw bar and the often-Instagramed Radicchio salad). However, our service started out mediocre and turned to appalling by the end of the evening. We elected to valet park (an additional twenty dollars) and asked the valet attendant whether we should pay upon arrival or departure. He responded that it did not matter, and so we handed him a twenty dollar bill to pay for parking as we left our car. When our bill arrived it contained a twenty dollar charge for valet parking. We alerted our server that we already paid for parking, and he proceeded to chastise us for doing this, telling us that, effectively, he would make an exception this time but that we should know better. His response was incredibly rude -- antithetical to the very idea of hospitality. It left an incredibly bad taste in our mouths.
First time to Angler. Loved the ambience, wine and food. Flavor profile is strong, so be prepared for full flavors with smoke being the signature flavor. Dishes are unique, not your usual fare. Everything was very, very good, excepting the bass, which was a little ordinary. Not bad, just not special. The wine list is a tour deforce, so be prepared. The Burgundy list alone is 34 pages! Will definitely be back.
Horrible service and discrimination by our waiter. If you are not a white male over the age of 70 with a gold Rolex, your service will be subpar. As a woman, I could hardly get the waiter to give me the time a day, yet alone adequate service for a $180 lunch.
Outstanding in every way. New and exciting menu, excellent service, interesting decor. Will be back. The price for the food is well worth it and actually reasonable for what you get! Love the family style entrees and how beautifully the server made suggestions based on what we were most interested in. Only downfall is the lack of reasonable choices on the wine list - while it is exquisite, for those of us who aren’t Silicon Valley executives, in order to enjoy a bottle of wine, there is really nothing reasonably priced. That being said - I highly recommend the BBQ pineapple cocktail, it is well worth $16! Overall very excited to re-visit Angler.
Much ado, and really about nothing. It's a competent restaurant with a great wine list, but the menu is quite limited, and you probably cannot do anything interesting with petrale sole or bass filet. Raw items were along the same lines - nice, but not special in any way. Fish/seafood lovers should be advised to hit the better Cantonese restaurants in the Bay Area rather than striving to get that difficult reservation at the Angler
It is an amazing experience in new cuisine and wonderful wine accompaniments. It is very expensive, the side room is not worth the price (ask for the main room), and it is noisy. For those with the funds, it is just super, but for us too much noise in a side room.
The dishes we had were truly outstanding. They included the salt and pepper bass, the BBQ quail, the Parker House rolls and the Angler Potato. The latter is unique and not to be missed. There are a few discordant notes which I hope will be corrected in the future. First, the servers are overzealous in their clearing of plates to the point that they attempted to remove plates that still had food or sauces that we still intended to eat. We saw this at tables other than our own as well. Simply asking would solve the problem. Second, the wood smoke in the air is excessive to the point that it overwhelms senses, and infiltrates clothes so that they must be cleaned. Adjusting the ventilation to fix this would be appreciated. Third, a restaurant that is aiming for casual should make more of an effort to have reasonably priced wine selections, maybe even a specially highlighted section, especially when so many are available from the local wine areas.
The ambiance and attentive service were outstanding. We were in excellent hands. The six of us were there for our daughter’s birthday.
The food was average to disappointing. The bread was good, but at $12 for a small tin of Parker house rolls, it was wildly overpriced. The butter, a mix of butter and kelp, was terrible.
We had the Caesar salad, which was very good, with a very balanced dressing. The green salad was ordinary- two lettuces and a lemon dressing.
The potato was excellent, the portion tiny. So was the beet- very tasty but tiny portion. The flake was minuscule. Among six of us, each got a tiny slice of flake, really a tiny bite each.
The whole fish, beautifully presented and filletted at the table, was dry and truly bland. The star dish was the whole chicken - moist, flavorful and a robust portion each. But you don’t go to “Angler” for chicken.
We enjoyed ourselves, and were pampered by the staff, but the food was disappointing and the portions small for the high cost.
