Ancora Cucina Italiana Ratings and Reviews
Ancora Cucina was a great place to dine. Food excellent, fair price, excellent wine, and good proportions. Would definitely go back. I will however have to give them ding thought. I used the online reservation, which was great, and indicated it was a birthday celebration. My wife's bday. The waitress did not acknowledge the occasion nor were we offered a desert menu. A little disappointed Ancora on that one.
I wondered if it was because they were busy? While I would return for dinner, not sure I would rely on the hosting/reservation staff to make sure the waitress was advised.
One of our favorite restaurant and very close to our home. Wonderful Italian cuisine and a most warm host that treats all like members of the family. Thank you Fabrizio. We have known Fabrizio for over 30 years and had many memorable occasions at Ancora.
On this visit, my wife enjoyed the Chicken Milanese and I enjoyed the special pasta Pappradelli with chicken and sundried tomatoes in a cream sauce. We also shared a delicious Caesar salad. Not for the diet conscious but a delicious treat. We'll be back soon.
The food was outstanding! And the waitresses were great and friendly. We had the eggplant parmigiana as an appetizer. Great! But then I had the pumpkin ravioli with I think a walnut sauce. Absolutely fantastic. My knees may have buckled. Such a great flavor and the raviolis freshly made and thin and cooked to perfection. Couldn't be happier! We were celebrating my birthday and the owner came over at the end of the meal with a complimentary slice of cheese cake with a lit candle. Just a beautiful end to a beautiful meal.
It was our first time at Ancora. The restaurant is nice not too large. and everyone very friendly. Good menus choices and very affordable. The food was very good, fresh, nice portions. There was a very large group of people with their children next to us. They were all extremely loud and abnoxios, the kids were screaming, parents did not attempt to quite them down. In short I could not enjoy my dinner and conversation with my family and got a terrible headache. Even the table in back of us also made a comment about how loud the kids were. Suggestion, they should close the restaurant for large parties, given the size of the premises. I would try it again in hopes that I can really experience the food.
The food was not as good as previous visits. We brought a couple here for the first time and they were disappointed. I felt so bad watching them add basaltic vinegar and salt to the burrata salad to try to extract some flavor from the bland salad. The pasta was good, but the fish was bland and flavorless.
We had gone to Ancora Cucina (under a different name) for years and when owners sold, we even went to their new restaurant on 3rd off of La Cienega several times and turned may of our friends onto the restaurant. We were so happy when we heard they were back in their old location in the valley. We had a 6:45 reservation. We usually eat later; and this time we noticed the dated decor, maybe a redo to this century would be in order. There were very few tables occupied when we got there. Ordered our two favorite salads; one with arugula, artichoke hearts and shaved Parmesan. of arugula, A plate of arugula but a DUSTING of artichoke hearts and cheese, most restaurants serve you much more cheese and artichoke.. For our main course we order veal and a fish dish, and waited close to 40 minutes before our food was served, although several tables who got there after us were done and we hadn't even gotten our food! The waitress kept on apologizing, and then sort of avoided us, at one point she asked if we would like to speak to the owner and we said by all means. Someone else finally came over and listened and said he would send the owner over. The owner walked by our table at least 4 times and didn't stop. When he finally did, he was curt and rude and never apologized, he tried to blame the lateness with our main course on the fact it was Saturday night and busy, but when we pointed out other people who came in after us hand already finished, he replied "that's the restaurant business. I then said all we wanted was an apology, things happen and he then said. "so now you are telling me what to say ?" Obviously this man has to be right and he/the restaurant was taking no blame.
Overall a bad experience from a once reliable host; I would recommend others to try Panzanella in Sherman Oaks for about the same price and see what a true Italian dining experience is.
Second and last time for this restaurant. Spaghetti with Meat Sauce extremely forgettable. Pasta dish with shrimp and muscles DRY, DRY DRY. I took 3 bites of the spaghetti and I was done. My husband and I agreed if we were starving and standing in front of this restaurant, we would walk on by.
We truly wish we could find just one Italian restaurant the was reasonably priced with good food in the Valley, or for that matter, any reasonably price restaurant anywhere!
Save your money and skip this restaurant.
My friends and I drove over an hour to get to this restaurant, looking forward to celebrating a birthday for one of the 5 of us. We asked the server to take a group picture of us and she looked very annoyed at the request. She took 4 pictures of us getting ready to pose since 3 had to stand up behind 2 sitting down (one of us is handicapped). The pictures were not posed, we were not ready. When we noticed that not one picture was acceptable we asked if she could take one more picture after we are ready, she grunted and looked very angry, took the picture and walked off. This set the tone of the evening for us, we have never experienced this kind of rudeness in over 25 years of getting together to celebrate a special occasion. The food was average. The atmosphere is plain, not elegant, too light and just not very appealing.
Maybe it was an off night, but the wait staff seemed very hassled and our waitress forgot to put in our order. They were apologetic and compensated us in the end. The food is very good and I'll give the the benefit and try again.
We arrived on time for our noon reservation. There was no other customers there, and there was no host. We waited and finally seated ourselves. Finally the cook or busboy came out and offered us water and told us the waiter would arrive. It probably took about 20 minutes for the server, who I think was one of the owners came, took our order. Took quite a while to get the wine we asked for. We would never go back. Food was okay
