Ammos Estiatorio Ratings and Reviews
I remember eating here many years ago and remember that it was good. What a difference this time. The octopus was too soft and tasteless, the Greek salad was terrible, because the tomatoes were mushy and watery. The spinach philo came cold, I sent it back . When it came back it was a better choice of the three, at least it had taste.
We didn't want to try anything else, as we were going to the theatre and didn't have enough time. We also didn't trust that other choices would be any better. The waiter was unavailable when needed , even though the restaurant was mostly empty. But he did come up few times to find out how the food was , but mostly was interested in us ordering more wine and food. When I told him about the octopus , he just shrugged and didn't offer to replace it with anything else. The room was very cozy and the decor was tasteful.. I was wondering why the place was empty ... Now I know why, mediocre food and mediocre service. Waste of money. Would not come back.
I was at ammos last night, I couldn’t tell you how happy I am about this experience!!! The food was spotless, we had the Chilean sea bass and the Laramie as a main course they were phenomenal, the octopus and zucchini fitters appetizers were very good as well. The wine recommendation by the sommelier-was perfect for what we had to eat.
This restaurant definitely was up to my expectations and I will definitely be back.
The food was ok, however the portions were very small. The special menu (New Year's Celebration) stated that they were going to give complementary shots throughout the night, none were given. The service was great, I still believe gratuity should be given at the discretion of the patron not something automatically added to your bill. Thus taking away gratuity because now it's obligatory and no longer the patron being gratuitous. $500 for dinner for 2 was a bit extravagant. It was New Year's eve but it still seemed a bit overpriced. A very expensive learning experience. I wouldn't recommend anyone to this place as the food was ok, not great.
This is an excellent restaurant! Food was terrific! I had a whole grilled Red Snapper that was delicious, we had two bottles of terrific Greek white wine recommended by the captain. Waitstaff was professional and friendly. And if you choose to go into Manhattan by train to Grand Central it is across the street.
The restaurant is very cozy, warm and inviting. We absolutely love the ambiance and the decor is very nicely done, lighting is perfect and really liked that they have round tables. We felt the restaurant had a few too many tables sandwiched together and it did feel rather tight. The bar area is small but very warm as well, a romantic spot. For appetizers we ordered vegetable chips with Tzatziki sauce which was very good and grilled Kalamari. The Kalamari was a bit chewy and a little fishy tasting. We each had a excellent cocktail, the Ginger Margarita and the sweet and spicy margarita. Very tasty and enjoyable. For dinner, the Solomos, salmon dish was very good, fresh and perfectly done. The other dish was the Katsikisia Salad with chicken added. Both dishes were very fresh, perfectly done and we thoroughly enjoyed them. We did not have dessert as we were so full from everything else we ate. We would definitely recommend.
Ammos Estiatorio continues to be a destination of choice for my business lunches in midtown. The food is great and though always full, the atmosphere allows for quality conversations and business discussions. It is convenient to Grand Central station and my guests find it to be a unique spot that they will use as well.
