Need to divide out the dining area. Tied to bar. Not very French. Need to step it up. Has potential.
My daughter and I came in on a Sunday at 4:00 for afternoon tea and I had very mixed feelings. The good: Attentive service and beautiful view of the plaza lights. The not so good: All of the food for our tea had clearly been made early that morning or the night before and was very cold and pretty dried out. For the finger sandwiches we had smoked salmon, cucumber and egg sandwiches...all open face and very dry. The salmon one was the only one with any flavor whatsoever. The other two had virtually no flavor at all. The scones and banana bread were okay but pretty dry and cold. There were also one petit four and one chocolate each...both were tiny. We paid just over $31 with tax but left hungry. I honestly would love to go again because the atmosphere and view are so stunning and the service was actually good. But the food quality was just really not that great. If the food were better I would come back in a heartbeat. For $31 I expect much better.
It was in a hotel. That was a big downside to the restaurant experience.
Unimpressive flavor for a price that boasts otherwise. Didn’t have carry-out containers for soup, so was given a coffee cup. It worked, but I expected more from a restaurant whose average entree price is near $30.
The restaurant didn't have our reservation made through Open Table. It wasn't a problem because there was no one there but it shows a lack of coordination somewhere. The food was only okay. The Mediterranean Vegetable sandwich had a poor texture and was flavorless. Others seemed to have fared better.
Was in the hotel so the bar was loud
Crab cake was good, but expected more
Flatbread was good
Pasta was good but butternut squash was not cooked through all the way
Fish and chips were yummy
Drinks were good
Waiter was outstanding.
Nice place to hang out, but would go somewhere else for a quiet date.
Food and service was very good! Ambiance was unexpected for a date night. Tables were small and chairs were casual metal parlor chairs. Ambiance was more fit for a quaint breakfast cafe.
Our third or fourth experience with American Slang and none have been disappointing. Excellent value for Sunday brunch; everyone raved about their meals – classic eggs Benedict, crabcake Benedict.
The restaurant is in the international continental hotel. The food was good service was good it did tend to be a little pricey. We had a simple breakfast and the bill was $56.
Loud and not a good value for the price.
We were a bit perplexed that the OpenTable app did not mentioned the restaurant is located in the InterContinental Hotel. The app did mentioned free valet. However, when we arrived, the valet was nowhere in site. The restaurant vibe was great -- loved the decorative accents, finishes, and view of The Plaza. Wait staff was friendly but not very communicative. I think we were the only people (there were 4 of us) in the restaurant at the time and we waited quite a bit for our food to arrive -- during which time, the waitress did not stop by our table. When the food arrived, the mushrooms were the BEST we've ever had. My yellowfin was a bit tasteless. The burger, chicken, and salads the others at my table had were all good. Think we were expecting more WOW factor from a restaurant located in the InterContinental. Not sure that we will be back.
Food was mediocre. Very nice decor. Food was fine for casual meal but definitely wouldn’t reccomend for a special occasion. The restaurant description mention d the word “foodie” which to me isn’t a term that should be thrown around lightly! I definitely wouldn’t put this food on a foodie level...it’s upscale bar food/sandwiches/apps. Entrees were lacking.
Our server was great but the hostess seemed out of it - we waited for her to acknowledge while she looked out the windows
Really nice setting and the food was good. We saw our waiter twice, to take our order and to drop the bill off. Service was horrible!
Pretty lame from start to finish. The atmosphere was boring and the food was just okay. Sorry, but I was expecting more.
Over priced. Better options near by.
The decor, view, and atmosphere were AMAZING. I had high expectations the moment I walked in. We were one of three tables that were there for brunch. Our drinks and food took much longer than anticipated - especially since they were not busy. When our food finally came out, our "over easy" eggs were cooked way too long and our medium rare steak wasn't even pink. The breakfast potatoes were tasty, and the fruit was fresh. But, I'd have to say those were the only two things I enjoyed about the whole brunch. There were 10 of us total, and not one person said they enjoyed their food. For the cost of brunch (without alcohol) I was expecting to be much more satisfied. We will probably not come back.
Completely underwhelmed, food was ok, service was ok, ambiance was poor, overall experience: boring and overpriced. Felt like a school cafeteria setting. Will not go back, will not recommend.
Delicious breakfast. Croque Madame was open faced and done just right topped with arugula and a very light dressing. Wife had a veggie omelet that was equally fantastic. Hot coffee, beautiful view, couldn't ask for a better post anniversary breakfast!
There was a limited bloody mary bar which could have had several more items to improve it. Pricey lunch but yummy.
When i booked it, i did not realize it was in a hotel, but it didn't matter. we had a wonderful breakfast with great service. I think the hotel location has the price points a bit up, but still worth a stop if you are in KC!
We had brunch and it was fabulous. The food was delicious and it is a lovely hotel and restaurant. Service was excellent. Coffee served in a large cup and was yummy.
My siblings and I took our mother there for Mother’s Day! It was our first time and we all had a great time and really enjoyed the food and experience!
Great atmosphere. There were staff members all over the place but it was fifteen to 20 minutes between visits to our table. Our food took 30 minutes (except the mother on mother's day, whose food took another 10 before she even got her plate). Crab cakes were burnt, Bernaise tasted like it was out of a jar. The menu looks great but real poor effort on these two items. Omelette and french toast were great however.
The service was bad. It was Mother's day brunch should have had better servers for such an important day.
The view and space are lovely, especially out on the patio when the weather allows, and the food was definitely unique and enjoyable. We ordered lobster pot pie and a pork dish with a mustard and pickled blueberry sauce. Both were very good and generous servings, though slightly under seasoned and over priced. The most unfortunate part of the experience was the service. I found them to be quite disorganized, with multiple servers stopping by our table to take orders when another had just left with our info. I think you can find comparable food with better service at other Plaza restaurants, but for drinks and a view, I would definitely recommend.
Really like this place have been there several times. Really like the view of the Plaza and great live music on Friday.
As French restaurants are concerned, there are at least 2 other restaurants in Kansas City I would recommend over this one. There was nothing wrong with the food or the service. Both were good. But I'm not sure why they think they are a French restaurant.
I didn't see anywhere on Open Table where it says this restaurant is in the InterContinental Hotel (it is). It would have made it much easier to find. I ended up calling them to find this out.
This was a rather casual restaurant. We didn't see the main entrance and walked in through the bar area, which is part of the restaurant. The coffee shop is also part of the restaurant. It does have a nice view of the Plaza if you're seated by the window. As long as you walk in knowing that, you'll probably be satisfied.
Adam was wonderful and the food was amazing. The staff was fantastic as always! Cant wait to return!
American Slang is always an amazing culinary experience.
an afternoon lunch with a friend, atmosphere was delightful with a wonderful view; a very sunny day; our waiter was extremely accommodating and very tuned into our needs. our meals were delicious ...we ordered salmon and chicken, both were cooked to perfection...and as a first timer, i am intrigued into returning for an encore to taste some of the other menu items!!!!!!!!!!!!
Great design and aesthetic!!
Food was good... but nothing that blew me away.
Meh. I was underwhelmed. The beef carpaccio was ok, but the portion size was small. The service was lousy. I wanted better. On the other hand, the seared tuna was PERFECT.
One of our favorite spots to eat and listen to casual live music.
American Slang was interesting. They should flip the restaurant with the living room on the other side. We sat by the window at a table and it was freezing. Our server was good, but claimed she usually was just a cocktail server. Perhaps the manager should orient the staff on the menu. We had the fixed menu and she claimed that it wasn't available until Valentine's Day. It was available. Overall, a good experience and the burgers were delicious.
Good food. Small portions. Live music in adjacent lobby.
Great food and a really nice view of the city. The restaurant is very bright and airy. Normally I don't like green beans but the side that came with the Chicken Calvados was cooked perfectly--not waxy, not soft, no sharp points. Well sauced meal and dessert was just right.
Fun atmosphere. I think they may still be working out a few bugs with wait staff but overall it was a fun restaurant week experience. We sat in the bar area after dinner and the entertainment was amazing.
Went for Restaurant week and came in early for a cocktail in their lounge area. Live music was nice and not too loud. Ambiance was okay for a hotel bar. It's adjacent to the restaurant. We were attended to immediately and well taken care of. Wine and beer list was ok but not amazing. Only 4 cocktails on the menu but all looked very interesting.
When we sat for dinner, our server seemed confused that we already had drinks. He never introduced himself or explained anything about the menu. He just kept coming back asking if we were ready.
The four of us all ordered different dishes. We all enjoyed them except my main dish-a chicken dish, was a bit bland and chewy. Everyone else enjoyed the food. Nice presentation and served at the right temperature.
When we asked for the check, our server seemed like he was confused about how to split our check. When he took a moment to engage us, he seemed very pleasant and personable, although a little unkempt for such a nice atmosphere.
Would be willing to try it again based on our overall experience, but perhaps when it isn't so busy.
Went for restaurant week and had the chicken option. The food was sub-par, though the ambience of the restaurant was beautiful.
