The American Grocery Restaurant, which can be found in Greenville, South Carolina, attempts to satisfy its customers with American food emphasizing freshness and local ingredients. The menu changes with the season so that the staff can provide you with meals brimming with freshness and taste. In addition to the food at the American Grocery Restaurant, the wine room holds over 100 wines that are hand-picked by the staff and stress the same principles as the food.
The entres at the American Grocery Restaurant highlight the kinds of fresh ingredients that are utilized. For example, you can try the cornmeal crusted sunburst trout or the confit of local rabbit.
Having dined here many times and always impressed with everything from the food to the level of service, American Grocery continues to surpass our expectations. This is truly a 'foodie' place with a creative and beautifully executed menu to the knowledgeable and warm service. From the cocktails to the artisan wine list to the seasonal menu, we couldn't be happier to have found our absolute favorite restaurant! I don't know why we go anywhere else in Greenville, it is a true gem of a place!
My wife and I were very pleased with AGR selection of local products.
The wait staff was extremely knowledgeable without being pretentious. To date this is our favorite downtown Greenville restaurant. We have a favorite restaurant from Southern California that we compare all restaurants to and this was close.
The food and service were outstanding and the staff set the scene for a romantic evening. My only compliant was the noise. When we arrived at seven,it was quite and romantic but as the night progressed a din filled the air somewhat killing the mood that was previously set. But overall a great restaurant.
Wonderful food. Great service. Enjoyed everything.
I enjoyed the reading menu.it sounded promising. Though a bit pricey for Greenville. If you have high blood pressure and cannot ingest high amounts of salt... Stay away from the smoked trout, collard greens, grits and the mussels in paprika. At one point it felt like the brownie tasted salty.
For the price point, there are several other restaurants in Greenville, SC with superior quality and service. American Grocery is unique in offering locally sourced vegetables, meats, and cheeses, but that is not enough in itself. The quality and service must match other local restaurants.
food was very good....service was awesome.....and i love the fact everything was received locally
The menu contained some "interesting" choices, such as sweetmeats, beef tongue, etc. but few that I would have chosen. The food was well prepared, presented nicely, but nothing that I wanted to tell friends about, and the bill for four of us was well over $400. Of course we did have an appetizer, salad, and entree, and wine, so it wasn't too surprising. I still would not rush to go back. There are too many other restaurant choices here in Greenville. Several of us felt that the entree was too salty. All in all, a so-so experience.
The food here is superb--fresh ingredients interestingly prepared. As good as or better than any place in the area (or beyond). Wines are complementary with excellent selections. The only problem we have experienced on previous visits has been with service when they are very busy. This night had few tables filled (unusual) and the service was impeccable. The restaurant is small and can get noisy when busy. A good choice for exquisite dining on garden/farm/ocean-fresh cuisine and for special occasions. A personal favorite.
Outstanding food, wine, service, ambiance, and staff. Truly a Greenville gem.
Everything was very good, except for my husband's entree, the Hanger Steak. I had read that Hanger Steak is one of the best cuts of beef, & that you don't see it around much, because butchers keep it for themselves. So I'm not sure what went wrong here, but it may have been that my husband ordered it medium rare, & it came out still mooing. He refused to complain, but I tasted it, & I really thought that the taste & texture would have been improved if it had been cooked to medium rare. I could be wrong. The service was friendly & excellent up until the last part of the meal. Getting coffee & the check was a moonshot. We selected a dessert, but by the time our server showed up to take our order, neither of us wanted it any more.
We had a variety of items from appetizers to entrees to desserts and every dish was excellent. The creativity of the dishes was unmatched.
In my opinion American Grocery is the best restaurant in Greenville, bar none. The food is creative, interesting, uses fresh ingredients, and is served with impeccable service. Their tasting menus are wonderful, and the complementary wines match very well while also being outside of what one might normally order. I'll be back!
Our overall experience was very good. The food is presented beautifully. The taste is excellent. The menu prices seem a bit high for the amount of food. However, there was a special menu with three courses for $30 at this time and it was an excellent value I think. I would recommend this restaurant for a nice occasion.
We very much enjoyed our visit to AGR, from start to finish. From the ease of booking the reservation through Open Table to Bettina's assistance when we were running late, my husband and I recommend this restaurant for special occasions. Luckily for our budget (this dinner was a celebration of our anniversary) we had made reservations during "Foodie Fest," which offered 3 courses for $30 plus a fabulous wine pairing with each course an additional $18. A serious plus for us is that most items on the menu are SC certified. We were glad to see Spartanburg's RJ Rockers' brewery on the beer list, but wish it had been on draft, rather than only in bottles. As the chef is from Spartanburg, would love for him open a sister restaurant there!
We had a great time. Great food, great service. We'll definitely be back!!
This place is all about the food. Everything we tried was fantastic. Very fresh ingredients brought together in a creative fashion. Portion sizes are modest, so more than one course is necessary if hungry. Very pricey for Greenville as appetizer and entree will run you about $40/person before tax and tip. The dining area is very small and somewhat cramped, which means it can be a little loud. Service is good, but nothing special. Wine list on website needs to be updated as many of the wines have changed and the actual prices are considerably higher on the wines they do have.
The dessert was incredible...unfortunately that was the only incredible part. Food was ok but not worth the price.
I used to commute to Greenville on business and had an occasion a several years ago to dine at American Grocery with an associate. I thought it was pretty good and have been meaning to go back since I moved here in 2008. I took my wife last Thursday and we both agreed that American Grocery is by far the best restaurant in Greenville. I'm not going to try to break it down here as I have in other reviews; if you haven't been to American Grocery, go.
American Grocery is consistently excellent despite the fact that their menu varies almost daily. Worth the price, and the tasting menus are terrific. I'll be back (again) soon.
A great experience, we couldn't fault them on anything.
The food was among the very best I have ever eaten. My friends were equally impressed with both the food and the service. Yes, it is expensive, but absolutely worth it.
Great "starter" and entree but dessert of peach cobbler was too tart.
Fantastic meal, excellent service, wonderful wine, perfect evening, as always. Love AGR.
Superb !!! My wife and I have NEVER been disappointed with any aspect of AGR. It has become our restaurant for our special occasions. Foodies may want more specific detail on the cuisine that I can not provide; however, we always enjoy the ambience, wine, and the food. It is well worth our trip from out of town to go to AGR.
This was an excellent prix fixe meal: the dishes were superb, the wines were too. It was exciting to find what wine the sommelier had paired with each dish.
This is the finest dinner I've had in Greenville, a city of plenty of fine restaurants.
Top notch food and service! Loved the prix fixe menu with wine pairing. Very quaint, intimate dining!!!
We have not been to AGR for six months or so because my last entree was a mess. But tonight was the food magic that we love. And our waitress was so pro-friendly and helpful with every step including a great tasting yet moderately priced pinot noir.
Seared duck breast was the entree star with my tasting of bone marrow a sumptious experience.
American Grocery is our all time favorite restaurant! We've been to restaurants all over the U.S. and this one takes the cake!!! We love the friendly staff and the yummy local food is so well prepared and combined with the perfect sides.
Went on June 26th, 2010. Had one of the most unctuous meals of my life. I had the bone marrow app with parsley salad-a popular recipe-but one that was executed perfectly. It was ridiculously rich, earthy, and base yet not overwhelming. One of the best small dishes i've had in a while. With equal concern in regards to th health of my heart as when I chose the bone marrow, I ordered the Wagyu beef flat iron steak. It was perfectly grilled, in between rare and medium-rare(perfect for Wagyu, in my opinion). The steak was buttery and melt-in-your-mouth delicious. I highly recommend American Grocery and will return soon.
Our waiter was fantastic and knew a lot about the food he was serving. He had eaten all of the dishes and treid all the drinks. All of his recommendations were fantastic. He gave my girlfriend and I enough space so that were able to enjoy each others company but also made sure we were very well taken care of. Wonderful food, great service. I love this restaurant.
Probably the best food we've eaten in Greenville! The food is delicious, the cocktails are creative and fresh, and the waitstaff (especially the bartendar) are friendly and professional. Our new favorite place.
My husband and I visit this restaurant as often as possible and the experience is always suberb. The food is fresh, presented well and tastes phenomenal. Service is top of the line and friendly. A consistent dining experience is hard to come by but American Grocery hits the mark each and every time.
We will return! Innovative menu items supported by excellent boutique wines at reasonable prices served by a well-trained staff. Kudos to Diane and Joe, owners as well as sommelier and chef. Emphasis on locally-grown products. Diners are supplied with a list of farms producing what the chef prepares and serves. You haven't tasted butter or goat cheese until you have tasted Happy Cow Creamery butter and Split Creek Farm goat cheese. This is an intimate restuarant with exceptional fare and a caring, supportive staff.
We celebrated our wedding anniversary there and the experience was outstanding. The food was GREAT and the staff was very knowledgeable.
We will go back again.
Great food. Great atmosphere. Especially great service.
AGR provides a wonderful dining experience. My wife and I have eaten there numerous times and we have never been disappointed with any aspect of AGR. To me, it is the BEST restaurant in the upstate.
The food was both unique and delicious. The flavours were wonderful and the combination of the main dish and the included sides were excellent. The recommended wines were the perfect complement to each course. Most of the ingredients are locally produced and selected for their quality and flavour. The atmosphere was pleasant, the wait staff was knowledgable and attentive, and provided great recomendations. The furnishings are simple but elegant. The name of the restaurant may lead to a different impression, however this restaurant represents the very best of American cooking and cuisine. We will be back!
This restaurant came highly recommended to us by the owner of another local eatery. We celebrated our 27th anniversary at American Grocery and were thrilled with our experience. Complementary champagn was a nice surprise. The food, all locally grown and raised, was superb. We love high quality and smaller portions so we don't leave feeling overstuffed. It was perfect. The service was wonderful too. We will definitely go back.
