America Eats Tavern
Wonderful casual restaurant with great food and drinks. Our server was outstanding as well. Highly recommend it.
Unfortunately, America Eats was having a bad night all around. Service was awful -- and was delivered by five different servers, the last one being the general manager. The original server kept blaming the kitchen for everything that went wrong. The food arrived separately, out of sequence, with the wrong side orders, and only lukewarm, which meant my dining partner and I were eating our entrees, sides and appetizers at different times. None of the servers offered to refresh our drinks, refill our water glasses, or ask if we wanted a second drink. We fled the restaurant before anything worse could happen, having turned down the general manager's offer of dessert, which was nice of him, but too late to salvage the evening. They did not charge us for the delayed appetizers. I think the food would have tasted good, if it had been served properly.
Distinctly average! Service was fine but food was nothing special. Expecting more from a Jose Andres restaurant. Wouldn't go out of our way to go back!
I highly recommend getting the pork rib and cornbread. The brisket was okay, not my favorite, but my friend loved it.
Great find in the heart of Georgetown! My wife and I enjoyed the great service from Shea, and the amazing fried chicken, grits, oysters and scallops. I highly recommend to anyone looking for a really good take on Southern cuisine in DC.
This is by Jose Andres, who created Oyamel, Jaleo and Zaytinia? It seems more like a Georgetown tourist trap than a special place. It seems like he said, ok, this is going to be American food, and American food is greasy and uninteresting. The menu wasn't very creative except for some truffle dishes on an insert. The shrimp and grits were doused in oil and grease, as was the spinach side. Unfortunately the service was very poor as well; I couldn't tell if they were short-staffed or if the servers were having trouble getting food to the second floor, but we were left alone for long stretches of time, like when the food came way before the wine and we had to wait to eat. Oysters came without utensils, then later they took my silverware but didn't bring me new silver with my entree so I had to flag down several people to help with that; and then they didn't bring me a sharp knife for my ribs (which also didn't come with any kind of towelette to wipe my fingers on). Bottom line, our server was a bit of a goof ball. The decor and atmosphere were nothing special either. It wasn't a nightmare, but for the price and the Jose Andres stamp, it was not what we expected. And I think this is the first negative review I've written here ...
Service was good! General manager was super nice! Food was good! BBQ chicken was amazing as was Mac n cheese and pulled pork sandwich. However, brisket was a bit tough .
Service was great. Food is still hit or miss. A few more healthy things would be great
Service was great, but deeply unsatisfied with my meal. I ordered the half smoked hot dog, which tasted way too much like mustard and the meat itself was plain.
This was my first time at this restaurant and didn't know what to expect. It was nice. We followed our waiter's recommendations and our food was really good. The service was excellent as well.
Pretty good restaurant, the seating was slightly awkward but was manageable. Food was delicious specifically the chicken wings and half chicken with Mac and Cheese.
Loved it. Shared a bunch of dishes (mac n cheese, cornbread, brisket and the ribs) and all were delicious!
Service was great. Had the shrimp & grits. Grits were bland, shrimp ok, sausage grissly & inedible. Not any spice at all. Probably made bad food choice. Others thought food good. Pricey for what u get. all sides extra.
Another winner for Jose Andres! Wonderful food! Wonderful time.
Friendly, welcoming place. We both had barbecue. The beef sandwich was a better value than the pork platter since the platter has no sides that come with and came with a large portion of fat. Service was somewhat slow given we were there early for dinner seating (but there was a big table there ahead of us). The meat tasted great, the chips seemed made inHouse and the sauce tasty and served warm. First time there, will try again and recommend to others.
Best bbq north of the Potomac.
One of the best bourbon selections have seen!!!
I visited for Truffle Festival and was not disappointed. I'm a Southern boy and their truffle cheese grits were a highlight. So, was The Rebel rum cocktail. Finally, the Madeira wine selection was a wonderful surprise.
Ambiance was fine, food was good but nothing spectacular. Limited menu.
We visited on a Friday night and it was a great experience. We did have a reservation so that made things easy. The food was fantastic but I found it to be a bit overpriced for what you get. I would not visit again unless I had a gift card
Was there for brunch with friends. Everyone enjoyed their choices, although the pork slice in egg fried sandwich was a little fatty according to my friend. I had the fried oyster has which was delicious. Our server was friendly, enthusiastic, and great as was the overall service. Will return there again.
The evening did not start out well. We had a reservation for 7:30 p.m. and we were right on time. We had to wait for 1 hour before being seated. The manager kept working with us and even offered free apps and we felt as if she was trying to help us until a party of 11 (with a reservation 30 minutes later than us) was seated ahead of us. At this point, things became a little tense. We were finally seated and the manager made sure our orders got in promptly and they did the right thing by offering us a discount on our meal (and free multiple desserts)! I do appreciate that they tried to appease us and because of that, I will give them another chance. The food was very good. Just one suggestion -- don't overbook for more than you can possibly seat.
Once again Jose Andreas delivers. With a menu developed in collaboration with the Smithsonian, America Eats puts a new spin on old favorites. My trout was perfectly cooked, and my co-diners appreciated their beef brisket and shrimp and grits. But it is the service in particular that stands out. Impeccably professional, our waiter was excellent at being there when needed, full of enthusiasm and information, and then fading into the background as our group enjoyed catching up with each other.
I love what Mr. Andres does for our world and even though I was furloughed, I brought family and out of town guests here to support his efforts. The food was pretty good. I had the trout. A few had fried chicken and liked it. The wings were good too. I was a little disappointed in the fried okra. They were lightly fried whole pods and I was expecting something different and tastier. My kid was not pleased with their vermicelli version of Mac n cheese and when I told waiter she didn’t like it, he did not offer to bring her something different nor did he take it off the bill even though she barely touched it. Thankfully she enjoyed the shrimp appetizer and someone shared a fried chicken thigh so she was fine. We sat upstairs and the floor shakes when servers are rushing back and forth, so that was a little disconcerting. But we had a great time, whiskey shots helped!
Mushroom soup, Wow! Pulled pork, delicious! Fried chicken, very good but not as good as at Republic in Takoma Park. Good seating for groups. Service was neither terrible nor great.
Great food and service!
Such a great experience.
Great server who held onto my purse after I forgot it at the restaurant! A bit loud for my taste, but maybe it was just the people next to us.
Had reservations but waited 20 minutes past our reservation time. Waiter was very nice and attentive but kitchen was very slow. Food was good. We spent over two hours at the restaurant. Would have liked to have had dessert but our party was tired and the restaurant was out of two or the three desserts we wanted to order.
I wanted to support Jose Andres because of all the goodwill he has been doing for the furloughed workers and PR, but I was disappointed by hostess that told me we would have to wait 30+minutes for our RESERVATION. The food was just OK. It might have been an off night, so I’ll probably try it again.
Went for restaurant week and the food was amazing but the service was very slow.
This place has great potential. I really enjoyed the salmon. But the extremely long wait times and the chore of even getting water really threw off our evening schedule. There just weren't enough staff.
The food was ok... I wanted to come in to support the Jose' because he is always looking out the people.
Amazing burger, even better service!
With the name of Jose Andres behind it, We thought the quality would have been better. Missed the mark and unlikely to return (maybe just for beer on the patio during summer!)
Ok, but reservation ran late. Waiter ok but in a hurry to see us out. Food ok, a bit rustic. All in all average
Some items were sold out. Food came out slow. Reservation was at 830pm, we did not leave until 11pm.... The food was delicious, just too much wait time between courses
Reservation took about 20 minutes to get seated. We were seated in high top instead of standard table that we requested. It just went down hill from there including cold Mac and cheese. Most likely due to restaurant week. Probably won’t be coming back.
It took a very long time for our order to be delivered. Too long. All the food we sampled was over salted.
The menu was interesting and everything we had was well-prepared.
