Incredible overall experience. The food is creatively prepare and presented. The wait staff is highly professional and well informed. The premium wine pairing was well done, though a bit pricing. The ambiance is perfect for a romantic night out. Overall, really a Michelin experience!
This restaurant is so ready for a Michelin Star! Attributes: Excellent service, unique food, meticulous plating, and a warm inviting atmosphere.
I have eaten at Ambience several times and each time it gets better and better. The atmosphere and ambience(hence the name) is truly what separates it from other fine dining restaurants. It is located in the heart of Los Altos and is truly worth the experience. The chef who serves a wide variety of dishes from game meat to seafood shares his expertise with each flavorful bite. The dishes are served with a variety of special flavors that amplifies each bite that you take. If you are in the area or if you have a special occasion with your significant other, Ambience would be an experience worth taking.
I treated one of my best friends to a lovely ladies night out as we are both foodies who enjoy treating ourselves. We were celebrating her birthday, and what a treat Ambience was! We have both dined at a handful of Michelin-praised restaurants, and were surprised to find out that Ambience hasn't been. It is a hidden gem! From start to finish, each course was spot on where the ingredients ranged from seafood to game to meat options. We opted for the premium wine pairings, because why not! While you'd have to expect that it would add to the final total cost, it was definitely worth the splurge as it only enhanced the flavors of each dish that they were paired with. Too many to note on this short review, but I know for sure that I will definitely be back!
Ambience is a true fine dining experience. The service was attentive and the food was amazing. The presentation was just as good as the food tasted.
Wonderful server Chris, elegant presentation of cuisine, not quite the French Laundry, but each dish was enticing to the taste buds. The wine pairing was spot on!
The food was good, and included dishes like pheasant and elk, which we really enjoyed.
The service was mostly okay, but when I would look up, the hostess was staring at us. She was also helping serve the dishes, and at one point, when I had eaten one bite of a dish and didn't like it, she told me that I should just try it and to take a bite. I found that pushy and presumptuous.
Honestly, I don't think I will be going back. What was supposed to be a romantic date night was ruined by the hostess' intrusiveness, and there are lots of restaurants with tasting menus to choose from.
True to the name it had great ambiance. It has a very intimate feel since they purposely partitioned the restaurant into smaller sections. The food and service overall were good as well. The food being a different take on contemporary Asian food which was great
It’s good for dates and special occasions. I would recommend going when it’s not busy so that you can pretend to have booked the whole restaurant.
About the only dish we didn’t like was the pheasant. The only other thing that missed the mark was they completely missed that I put this as a “birthday” on the Open table reservation. The SO was not too pleased about that. That said if you do have a special occasion, I would call to confirm that they noticed it.
Ambience is the perfect place to go on a date. Taking the entire family may not be worth it, but it will be memorable, no matter what. To appreciate the food one must savor every bite, be brave and curious, take time to observe each plate, relax over a 3-hour span of time, and not be worried about the budget. The price is extremely high though it must be comparable or maybe even budget against the likes of Chez TJ, Alexander's Seafood, Baume, etc.
When Ambience first opened, it was $125.00 pp, new, and their serving plates/dishes was like an art show. This time, $175 pp without wine is what you can expect. Can't help wince at $50.00 for a single glass of wine.
Fantastic service and presentation. Many seafood themed plates made this a fun, exotic experience. Our server's accent was a bit difficult to understand. We wanted to experience more of a variety of meats or desserts. Still, this place is a hidden gem.
My second visit here at the ambience restaurant located in the heart of Los Altos. I again am left speechless, from the service to the creative dishes they serve , your time at ambience is truly worth every bit of your time. What stands out the most during your dine in experience is the attention to detail each plate is prepared. It is prepared in meticulous fashion and every bite you take an expression of the chefs innovation magnifies with each bite. A definite gem and true find.
Out of the 12 items we had for dinner we could say that we were impressed with only 4. I was underwhelmed with the each dish. There was an overwhelming use of butter in each dish which left me thinking the chef isn't experienced and also explained why the restaurant was dead on a Friday night. When we would get another course, we would be disappointed that it would be yet another too fishy tasting seafood course. The only good seafood course was the Tuna tartare. The lobster was ok, but again too much butter. It was just lobster swimming in a butter bisque.
Great and fancy dinning. Food was great but not very impressing.
Hidden Gem with Great Food in Quiet Los Altos
We finally visited Ambiance about a year after hearing wonderful review from friends. What a delight! We entered early in the evening so we were fortunate to have a knowledgeable waiter/unofficial sommelier spend time with us throughout the meal, along with one of the owners. The prix-fixe tasting menu of approximately twelve small courses plus amuse-bouche--could be paired with high end or even higher end wines but we chose to have a couple of glasses each from the wine list. Each small plate was amazingly delicious and gorgeously presented. Don’t go if you are looking for a bargain, but do go if you are a foodie demanding the highest quality!
The place is actually better than we expected. Plus it's not the busy on weekdays(this is a relatively new restaurant), you can always walk-in without waiting. Good choice if you have not made your plans yet and it's 6pm. Never hurts to try this one!
Great place for a special occasion. A nice quiet almost private experience. Service was top notch and food was creative and thoughtfully put together.
Excellent food and services. Tasting menu is delicious and good price.
They deserve at least a Michelin star. Excellent unique good that will hit your senses, especially smell.
Wonderful dining experience right in the town of Los Altos. Who needs to drive to San Francisco when you can get a wonderful dining experience like this right in our backyard?
Does not worth the price based on the quality of food. It's probably because they are using same sour element in a lot of their courses, even sea food, which is so strong that the original taste of food gets overwhelmed - personal feelings, it's not quite my type but it does not mean it's not yours.
We were here last Friday to celebrate my wife's birthday. Very good food.
One of the best food I ever tasted. Amazing creativity and attention to detail. Was a tiny bit disappointed by the dessert but the rest of the food was amazing.
The service was nice but the place was really feeling empty to a point that was a little bit unpleasant. Also at this price you expect the extraordinairy and couple of missing bulbs, Ikea type of water glass and post it on the walls are not what I expect with this caliber of restaurant.
Won't come back because at this price, I have other favorites but the food was superb.
Divine cuisine, prepared by a deft hand with a true appreciation and understanding of flavor. Top shelf service from the first and last moment you set food inside. Incredible wine pairings (we shelled out for the premium pairings, so our experience was particularly impressive). Our menu included:
Tea (palate-cleanser) = 8.5/10. Honey, ginseng, floral notes. Very interesting.
Salmon amuse bouche = 9/10 (flaky, buttery, yet robust and full of, but not overpowered by, salmon flavor)
Poached oyster = 7/10 (oyster is not my cup of tea, but this was prepared very well)
Seared scallop = 9.5/10. (slightly smokey, with a small piece of dill to add an extra dimension)
Seared king salmon = 9/10. (dense, flavorful, satisfying)
Bone marrow potage = 10/10. (served with an artisan, seasoned crouton. The single bite of bone marrow, with the marrow/jasmine rice potage, and crouton was one of the highlights of the evening)
Tuna belly tartar = 9/10. (this was a complimentary course that the chef threw in. Very fatty and flavorful; the bacon of tuna. Served with a sweet reduction)
Grilled lobster tail = 10/10. (the highlight of the evening. Served with lobster bisque and bread. The best bite of food I've ever had)
Grilled pheasant = 9.5/10 (prepared like a traditional duck plate; sweet dark berry glaze, with wild blueberry couscous and ginkgo nut. A real treat for lovers of game bird)
Elk tenderloin = 10/10 (served with a red wine reduction sauce and paired with blackened wild rice. If not for an overachieving lobster dish, this would have been the best plate of the night)
Mignardise = 9.5/10 (two flavors were served; a chocolate chambord and a vanilla bean with hints of orange zest. Incredibly tasty, while not overwhelmingly sweet)
Flour-less chocolate gnash = 10/10 (as with the lobster and the bone marrow potage, this is one of the venue's signature dishes. Masterfully crafted, with a hardened sugar glaze that was darkened to match the colors on my fiance's dress)
A dining experience-
Take the time to enjoy each morsel.
Amazing sugar work and presentation.
small neighborhood restaurant-onlt serve 1 tasting menu-no substitutions! wine pairing is overpriced--food and service were good
An excellent top level, intimate dining experience. Creative courses, excellent service. One of the finest around.
I took my daughter & her sweetie to Ambiance for her 27th B-day. It was their 1st time at a Michelin-starred restaurant, and 1st time with a multicourse tasting menu, and they loved It! More meaningfully, I have dined at many Michelin-starred restaurants, and had many fantastic tasting menus (at Louis 14th in Monaco, French Laundry, Le Crocodile, Manresa, Chez TJ, & Elizabeth Daniel, to name just a few), and I loved it! The ambience was relaxing and lovely, the service (Omid!) was terrific, and the food was superb. 4 terrific amuse bouches, all a delicious mix of colors, flavors and textures, the best of which was a Coos Bay oyster in a delightful aromatic broth with flying fish roe frozen in a fog of liquid N2. Followed by 14 courses (the chef tossed in a freebie - a delicious ahi tartar cylinder with caviar and frizzled leek), each more delicious than the last. A few of the best included their standout poached Maine lobster in saffron broth, the souveed breast of pheasant with pickled citrus, cherry and ginko nut, and a fabulous tenderloin of elk in marrow reduction sauce. One of the best things, which is not so easy, was the excellent pacing and perfect portion size - as much as I loved it, one of the most annoying aspects of a prior dinner at the 3-star Louis 14th in Monaco was paying $1000 for two for a black truffle rich tasting menu, only to be completely stuffed prior to the 1st game course. After an absolutely fabulous 18-course meal at Ambiance (including 4 amuse bouches and 3 after-dinner espressos), plus 3 Premium wine pairings & healthy tip it was $1200 and worth every penny! All 3 of us left sated but not stuffed. The premium pairing ($165 pp) was superb, including mostly stunning French wines (including a Montrachet, a Sancerre, a Chateau Neuf d' Papp, & a terrific dessert Sauterne, plus a great Austrian wine and a knock-your-socks-off Italian viogner). See pics - who knew that Los Altos had a restaurant this good? Not me, but now I do!
It being a belated anniversary celebration we chose Ambiance after reading good reviews. It exceeded our expectations. Chef Song serves only a prix fixe meal which may be paired with wines or not. We chose the wine pairing and one of each of the domestic and French options. This proved a good decision since some of the offerings were quite different for several courses and educated us on what choices would work well with different fish and meats. Each dish was exquisitely presented with perfect timing and an explanation of the ingredients. The flavors ranged from delicate to bold, but never overpowered the main ingredient, be it fish, fowl or meat. I lost track of the number of taste treats provided, but savored each.
We seldom eat out because most restaurants either are to noisy or too rushed. Ambiance was neither, hence was delightful, allowing us to enjoy the full benefit of Chef Song's culinary works of art. We left pleasantly satiated, pleased to have spent an evening enjoying a meal prepared by someone who loves his craft and it shows. We will return for another special occasion.
Amazing food, service, and atmosphere.
If you want to try a symphony of food, this is a great place. The Tasting menu offers a palette of different tastes and colors. I was amazed by the taste and tenderness of the elk, but every dish was delicious, the pheasant moist and tasty, the oysters delightful. The presentation is wonderful and makes you want to contemplate the dish before you eat. Best of all at the end of the meal, you feel just right, the Tasting dinner is not heavy, but unlike some modern tasting menus you feel satisfied.
Amazing experience at this hidden gem! Michelin star quality food and service without the attitude, highly recommended!
Everything was phenomenal! The food and service was unforgettable!
A neighborhood gem for exquisite dining, plan to spend some time eating
Ambience is a hidden gem that I would love to keep for myself but I know it deserves higher recognition and will only be a matter of time. I've now been three times with my boyfriend and we just cannot stop going! The food is always fantastic with the best service. If you ever go and are lucky enough to have Scott as your waiter, I promise you will have the best service from a genuinely great guy. If you get the wine pairing with your meal he will tell you all the fun tastes he has found in each wine selection and they make the experience more thought provoking. I completely trust Scott with any wine recommendation without question. I also would probably eat food off the ground that the chef makes because his menu is that good. If you want a 3-star Michelin experience without the over pricing and impossible reservations, this is the place to go. I am shocked they don't have a star by now because they are just as good, if not better, then the five different 3-star Michelin restaurants I have visited, along with around ten 2 and 1 star restaurants. This meal is not just a simple meal but a beautiful experience with amazing people. Go! You will not regret it.
We went here on a special family night out (visiting relatives). It was a unique, wonderful experience and I'll definitely be coming back.
Several of the courses will be remembered for a long time.
Bone Marrow, Truffle Potage was amazing.
Poached Black Bass was very unique.
The Elk Tenderloin was incredible.
The ambience at Ambience could be better. It is a plain store front, with little to indicate on the outside, what treasures await inside. Parking is plentiful in Los Altos. We also had the old-country wine pairing. Very fine wines, nicely paired, completed the gastronomical experience.
Our experience at Ambience was wonderful. The subtle dialogue between Asian and French influences took us on a gastronomic a memorable journey.
Ambience was a remarkable experience that anyone who is either a fan of fine dining or just an avid foodie should try from the decor to the wonderful service that they provide. Ambience is definitely world class when it comes fine dining experience. The food was exceptional and so was the wine that came along with each dish. i would highly recommend trying ambience not just once but several times. Oh also the chef was named top 100 chefs in the United States recently.
Amazing journey of food, flavors, textures, and variety.
A great place for foodies with no restrictions!
Prix fix menu only, great wine pairings
I had scallops, lobster, uni, pheasant and elk.
All amazingly creative and tasty.
Definitely will go again.
What a little gem, this one. The food was outstanding and the service was exceptional! Every course offered a unique flavor and the wine pairings were fabulous!
Excellent tasting menu with some of the highest quality ingredients I've seen in a Bay Area restaurant. Will definitely be coming back!
