Amber India Ratings and Reviews
Service abysmal. Took 30 minutes to get a bottle of wine. Food worse than the service. Duck appetizer dry and chewy. Lobster main course in a nutshell: left lobster on the plate for the first time ever. Maybe the worst dining experience ever in SF. Hard to be believe it is highly rated. Had two Indian colleagues at dinner and they both agreed the dinner experience was sub-standard.
Amber is a lovely restaurant space, easy to get to on BART and staffed well. But the food was uniformly undistinguished. For four of us, we ordered two starters (Duck Breast and Cauliflower,) four mains (Butter Chicken, Lamb Chops, Chicken Biryani, and a seafood clay pot,) plus two sides and rice. Our lovely server endorsed our order as including many of her favorites. The food was pretty, arrived hot and at a good pace, but was too much alike. The flavors across the range of dishes were too homogenous. I was very disappointed and will not return nor would I recommend it.
We were early for 5:45 pm reservation by 20minutes so we asked the Manager if we could be seated or wait at the bar. He said no problem we can seat you. The hostess took us to our table in a corner where there were guests seated on either side of our table. All other areas of the restaurant were empty so we asked to be seated in the middle of the restaurant and not be confined in one corner with rest of the guests. The hostess said she was explicitly told to have us seat there. I asked to please request and check with the manager again. She came back with the same answer that the sections are divided by servers. I went to the Manager and asked to be seated somewhere else and he said that’s all the seating he has or we can wait at the bar. So we waited at the bar and in less than 15 mins our table was ready and he called us to be seated. For just 15 mins of this behavior from the Manager I am giving them low rating.
We love Indian food and this was great! Fun location. They had some issues with our cocktails but fixed them right away. We ordered the saag paneer and the butter chicken with lots of naan. There were 3 of us and this was plenty of food and was wonderful! They also gave us a light and refreshing sorbet at the end. We all would recommend this place and will be back!
#1. Definitely not for vegans. #2. Very limited menu, not the usual wide range of foods. #3. My particular dish was execrable, some sort of jalapenos in a gloopy, tasteless gravy (like gravy for mashed potatoes. But over jalapenos.) No other vegetables. Ick. It's hard to screw up Indian food but this place did it. #4. Cocktails were good. #5 Waiter was inattentive and impatient. #6.
This is our go to restaurant every Dec before or after the theater or ballet in the city. The korma is excellent and the kids love the virgin cocktails. This time around we tried the sea bass clay pot and it was a bit too oily but everything else was flavorful and well prepared. The cauliflower appetizer is a must.
Order a starter (Spinach) which was excellent that arrived very promptly, followed by the Tandoori chicken, which came after over 30mins. It was very dry and the chicken and did not taste as good as previous times when I ordered it.
Wine was ordered by the glass, but had to wave the waiter numerous times to get his attention.
A discount was made on the check for my comment about dry chicken, which was a nice gesture. But the fact that it happened makes me feel like they are inconsistent.
We are new to SFO. We went there with a lot of expectations after reading the reviews. However, it turned out to be a very bad experience. We didn't like the food at all. This restaurant seems very non-vegetarian biased and I could be wrong, but none of there vegetarian dishes impressed us, cocktails were okay. Not a good value for money we spent.
We had an amazing holiday get together of friends. We loved the cauliflower in coconut creme and the flash fried spinach. The butter chicken might just be the best anywhere. Service was friendly and helpful, ambiance was just right for catching up. Location right downtown feels special. Can't wait to return.
The food arrived hot but I received the wrong meal at first. They apologized saying they were unusually busy. When my meal finally arrived it was good but not among the best Indian I have had. There was very little depth to the flavors. The Naan was definitely not very good. It reminded me of an overdone pita more than a Naan, dry and flavorless.
