We ended up thinking that everything was good but it was expensive for what we got. We also discussed that it may because it’s in San Francisco. :-)
Great food! Great options for vegetarians! The food is fresh and tasty. They have good dessert options.
Nice meal with family. Very good butter chicken.
Excellent quality of food, service and ambiance! The menu is more pricey than a 'typical' Indian restaurant, but this is a high-end experience reflected across the board. The curry dishes are phenomenal - we had Rogan Josh lamb and the Masala chicken. The chaat is a real gem - great starter dish. Every time I'm in SF, I go here for client entertainment or with friends and family.
One of the Indians in my group (besides me) said this is the best Indian food in SF. I haven't tried many others, but overall, it is very good. The buffet has a great balance of veg/non-veg as well as meats including fish and chicken.
It was great
I love Amber India and go here to have different and spicier options than Dosa. Usually I love this place but the last time we went the service was painfully slow and our waiter "disappeared" (not sure where he went, and we kept needing to repeat our order and requests). Also the white chicken meat we ordered had a ton of small bones in it, which just seemed like poor preparation and it's certainly not fun watching my friends choke on the bones. I really think (..or hope) this was more of a one time failure rather than a routine experience, because otherwise I think the food is different, spicy, and definitely worth it.
A very nice evening and dinner with an interview candidate. The food and service were excellent.
Love this place! Flavorful! Great service!
It was a very wonderful evening as it was a special occasion. Ambiance, food and the service was very good as expected. It is always one of my favorite places to go for having lunch or dinner. Thank you.
Champagne buffet Indian lunch for $25/person in downtown SF with lots of variety of both vegetarian and non-veg dishes. This is great value.
The host was rude
Fabulous Indian Food! Great service! Fine tables! Will be back!
Good ambience, bad food!! This place is pricey, that is fine but the taste of the food is not even close to indian food. If i heat my togo food the day after, i assume that will taste better.
Ambience is good for an indian restaurant but everything else, including service is bad. I had higher expectations from this place, but it was an utter disappointment. Breads were frozen ( no fresh breads), curries were spice-less and sweet. Not even close to good indian food. Big no, if eating good indian food is on your mind.
Delicious, as usual. My only negative is that it's a tad pricey, but I don't mind paying more for excellent food.
Good Indian dishes with some creative twist. Getting a table took some time past the reservation time but once seated it was a good experience
Excellent Indian restaurant, the best of SF. Food is authentic and of great quality, beer is good, ambience is nice.
The Chicken Biryani rice is excellent, same (if not better) than the best restaurants in Hyderabad.
Best Indian food we’ve ever had, and that’s saying A LOT. The wait service was one of the best we’ve ever experienced as well. But, for the first time, we went with a stroller, only to learn that they don’t allow strollers. We had a travel stroller that did not allow the seat to be removed, and our 6 month old is too small for a high chair. They ended up going out of their way to accommodate us, but just be forewarned, don’t bring a stroller in the future.
Best classy Indian buffet (lunch) in town. They always have a live cooking station, love their appetizers and deserts.
Table was not ready at time it was booked for which in and of itself wasn’t that bad but the attitude of the manager was rude and horrible. I merely asked (so I could weigh my options) how long it would be before the table would be ready and he responded he had no idea, that I should sit down, and that I should consider myself lucky for having a reservation at all, or else I would have had an 1.5 hour waiting time. A small apology for the delay is all that’s required to keep a guest with a reservation happy.
They offered us the menu per person option
Not good, better a la cart
Excellent Indian Food and great service! The lunch buffet is the best but dinner was also good
I go here quite often one of our favorite places for a friends or family lunch..excellent buffet
I've been going to Amber for many years and have ranked it high on my list of preferred restaurants in this SF neighborhood. But this time the lunch buffet seemed duller and less flavorful than in the past. The butter chicken was bland, the naan was dry, etc. I trust this was just an off-day and will give it another try. Meanwhile, it wasn't bad, but I was disappointed compared to stellar past experiences.
Good spot for healthy vegan food with an upbeat business atmosphere. I recommend the restaurant. I hope that Amber adds more vegetarian and vegan options to the menu.
My wife and I have eaten many times at Amber and it is always a pleasant experience. The dining room is well laid out, the menu is varied, the food well prepared, and the wines are fairly priced. This time the only negative aspect was the relay team service. I prefer to have one person introduce themselves at the beginning of the meal and for them to serve our table throughout the meal, not one person taking the order, then another introducing themselves and another bringing the food where upon the first person reappears. Management may think this increases efficiency but it definitely lessens the dining experience.
This high end Indian restaurant was delicious and had a beautiful atmosphere. The service was good and the meal was really enjoyed. Great Friday evening dinner!
I felt robbed at 21.95 for lunch buffet. Small buffet and almost everything fried. So disappointed.
The lunch buffet is a great deal and it's really good! A great variety of meat and veggie dishes. The staff is always friendly and service is great.
The best thing this restaurant has going for it is location. But otherwise, it is waaaaay overpriced Indian food. The Indian food is not much different than anywhere else. The raita was thick and flavorless. The naan was flat and basic. Service was good though.
Amazing Indian food. Great for date night or happy hour.
This was my 5th or 6th visit to Amber and definitelky the last one. The service was mediocre and the food was disappointing. The hot appetizer ( duck kebab) was served lukewarm and was too sour, the entrée (butter chicken) was nothing to write home about and the dessert (Panna Cotta) was nothing even close to what Panna Cotta should be. I was actually surprised to see Panna Cotta dessert on the menu in the Indian restaurant and asked the waiter prior to ordering if it was really an Italian style Panna Cotta which he confirmed - a true lie resulting in sending the dessert back...
However the most unpleasant thing was that despite informing the restaurant that this dinner was my friend's birthday celebration no one bothered to put a candle in his dessert ot at least congratulate him on his birthday.
Excellent service, ambiance, and location. This is a place I've been to before.
Would be nice if some rice or bread came with mains. Portions could be a bit bigger for some as well - lots of sauce but not much chicken, for example.
Crowded but excellent buffet.
Amazing service, even better food! We felt tended to the whole night, and they provided food like Chicken Tikka Masala despite it’s not being on the menu. Wonderful place!
Waiter ignored our request for menus twice. Finally had to walk out. Have had previous good experience at Amber but I guess they just want to push the expensive high margin buffet at lunchtime...
Service abysmal. Took 30 minutes to get a bottle of wine. Food worse than the service. Duck appetizer dry and chewy. Lobster main course in a nutshell: left lobster on the plate for the first time ever. Maybe the worst dining experience ever in SF. Hard to be believe it is highly rated. Had two Indian colleagues at dinner and they both agreed the dinner experience was sub-standard.
Pricey but unbelievable food. Best Indian food I’ve ever had
Amber is a lovely restaurant space, easy to get to on BART and staffed well. But the food was uniformly undistinguished. For four of us, we ordered two starters (Duck Breast and Cauliflower,) four mains (Butter Chicken, Lamb Chops, Chicken Biryani, and a seafood clay pot,) plus two sides and rice. Our lovely server endorsed our order as including many of her favorites. The food was pretty, arrived hot and at a good pace, but was too much alike. The flavors across the range of dishes were too homogenous. I was very disappointed and will not return nor would I recommend it.
