Ambar is a modern Balkan tapas-style restaurant. With a desire to introduce Washington, D.C. to cutting edge Balkan cuisine, proprietor Ivan Iricanin has created a dining space that will delight and indulge the senses.View Private Dining Details
We went to celebrate a friend’s birthday and the wait staff did a phenomenal job. We will definitely be back again!
We came here for an anniversary dinner and Ambar did not disappoint. The $50 unlimited small plates and selected drinks experience is phenomenal and every single dish we ordered was delicious. Even the "worst" dish we had was just slightly less fantastic than the others, there wasn't a single bad plate that we had. The biggest downside is that there was simply too much for us to try in one sitting (I guess we'll just have to go back).
I had been worried that the restaurant might have an incentive to slow down service after awhile as a sort of soft-cap on the amount of food you can get, but that didn't happen at all. Our server frequently came by to ask if we wanted to order more plates and we could have happily kept going if we hadn't been full to bursting. They also did a very good job of making sure our wine glasses were never empty. So the experience is really quite good value for the money.
Great evening and food! Service was excellent. They were quick to bring first course so we weren’t starving 😀
we love the restaurant！small but adorable！food is really tasty，far beyond expectation. tartar beef and pullef pork are unbelivably delicious～
Ambar sets a high bar. Food was creative and delicious. Staff was friendly and helpful. Setting was comfortable and cozy, without feeling crowded or too noisy. Definitely worth going a little off the beaten path for.
We went to Ambar to celebrate a friend's birthday. The service was great, the food was beyond wonderful and the nice surprise was a birthday dessert at the conclusion of the meal. I would highly recommend Ambar to anyone interested in eating authentic, expertly prepared cuisine.
Our number one fun spot in DC. Great food and great service. Authentic Balkan cuisine with expert employees who are native to the area and/or sent to Belgrade to train. There is something for every taste and It’s all authentic and delicious. You can’t beat the Balkan experience which lets you try everything and go back to what you like. $49 including beer and wine ($39 without) puts price and value out of this world. Don’t tell them but I’d sure pay more. The only thing I’d like to see are some different desserts. I’ll stop every time I come to the city
On of my favorite brunch spots. From the moment you walk in the door, the staff is so warm and welcoming. You feel like you are visiting with family. The Balkan experience is all you can eat small plates and unlimited brunch cocktails. A great value at under $40, and the food tastes wonderful.
Great atmosphere and good food
As always, a great night out with friends in DC. My personal favorite restaurant! Food was amazing, can’t get enough Brussel sprouts.
Really good variety of bottomless foods and drinks
I did not like that the hostess informed my guest and me, upon our arrival, that we have limited time to have dinner. Reservation was at 7pm on a Friday and were told that the table has another party coming after us at around 8:45. Disrespectful..
I really enjoyed the unlimited small plates option. All the dishes we're quite distinct and very creative in both presentation and flavor. The food and drinks were served in short order and the wait staff was very attentive. I would definitely like to return in the future for a group event.
Celebrating a friends wedding! Four is the perfect amount of people for the Balkan Experience! Brussels and Lamb are delicious!
Wow. Wow. It’s been a long time since I have eaten at a place were the service was as spectacular as the food. Ate here for lunch on a whim. Balkan food? Never even heard of it. But the reviews compelled me to try and SO glad I did! It’s delicious. DELICIOUS. The $19 any dishes you want (really) lunch menu is a great deal. Come hungry! Our server was a gem (mortified I cannot remember her name). When she learned my friend and I were from Seattle she sent us a bunch of extra dishes to try and little, individual bottles of the traditional Balkan liquor. What an unexpected and memorable lunch! Those of you living in Capitol Hill are lucky to have this culinary treasure in your backyard!
Sadly underwhelmed by an experience I longed for. And the problem was the food (at least, what we ordered). Brussels sprouts were delicious but too rich. Chef’s spreads were good if not stunning. Stuffed cabbage was leaden, cabbage heavy, and oddly chewy. Fries were...bleh. Why bother? Guests were OK with almond-crusted chicken but no swooning. Service, though, was thoughtful and paced well. Maybe just not our night but left too much on the table.
Food was great as always, but as we were there for a special occasion we did the all you can eat option. Our server did a fantastic job of pacing the meal, choosing complementary plates and accommodating dietary restrictions. A+ work, team!
Love going to the Ambar! Will do so every time I am in the DC area.
Food was amazing, we chose to do the $49 all you can eat and it was fantastic ! Romantic setting.
Ambar was excellent! We went to the Clarendon location previously and this one was just as good (if not better since drinks are included with the unlimited meal at this location!). We went for my birthday and they even provided a surprise complimentary dessert. The service was great, the food was DELICIOUS, and the atmosphere was perfect. If you haven't been, GO NOW!
Amazing. Everything was delicious
Great restaurant! Very friendly staff. We chose the experience, which is $49 for all you can eat tapas & drinks. The food was very good!
While attending a conference in DC, we were looking for something different. Amber is more than different, it was special. The accommodating staff, including the bartender who let us taste a variety of Bulgarian wines, and made recommendations off the menu, made us feel at home. We did the “experience “ and tried many dishes. All we excellent. Only sad thing, there are no Balkan restaurants in southern Nee Jersey. Oh well, Amber is worth the drive for the food. Made our weekend.
Everything was delicious!
Great experience. In for friend's wedding and trip advisor had great review
Food is outstanding and varied for vegetarians. Hard to have conversation especially near the bar for dinner on Fri night we were there. Particularly good were smoked trout, anything with mushrooms and leeks.
The meat pie was a little over done and dry. Everything else very good.
They accommodated a more than late arrival even calling me to check on arrival and still a upheld a very nice table for us in the restaurant. The service was very good and the food cooked to perfection. Accompanying drinks offered could be better but I would recommend ordering your own drinks separately from the included menu option experience unless you want to drink a lot! I will definitely return!
Exceptional food as always - every dish that comes out of the kitchen has been paid attention to. The Ambar experience is worth the money and time. My other friends at the table did note that the service was a tad bit slower in the DC branch compared to VA branch, then again, as the server mentioned we were ordering too many dishes every round.
I, especially as a vegetarian would highly recommend this place for the great variety and consistent quality of the food.
On a visit to Washington DC we looked up great places to eat and this place ranked highly. Was not disappointed. The ‘unlimited’ menu gave us the opportunity to try many flavorful dishes at a price. The service was very friendly fly and efficient. I would highly recommend and will be sure to go back whenever I am in DC.
Good food and amazing service as always!
Delicious Balkan food and drinks! Friendly and nice staff. The kajsija cocktail was chock full of various levels of flavor! The lamb medallions and stuffed sour cabbage were especially yummy! #droolworthy #gaygourmands
Great service for four of us visiting DC. We ordered small plates and enjoyed every single one of them. Especially good vegetarian options. The cocktails were unique and not too sweet. We even had a lovely after dinner Rakija. Best experience of the weekend.
Great Balkan food and friendly, attentive service and moderate prices. Have tried different dishes on two separate occasions. The dishes were better the second time. Will try new dishes when we go again.
We enjoyed our time. Our table was a high top which was a little uncomfortable for a long lunch but the food was yummy and exciting.
Good, rich food, a cross betw Mediterranean and German cuisine. The $49 prix fixe, incl cocktails and unlimited small plates is a bargain.
Great place. The food and service are the best. I do recommend this place for any ocassion. I have been there twice with my boyfriend and we love it.
The staff is always very friendly and outgoing as well as very attentative without being overbearing. Food was great as always.
