Love ambar! Everything is shareable small plates but it's really medium sized plates and solid pricing - and incredible deal during happy hour. The cabbage rolls (sounds eh right?) are fabulous - as good as I had in Romania.
This was my third time dining at Ambar, but first time for lunch. It was also my special birthday lunch with my office colleagues. As always, the food and service were exceptional. I plan to return for lunch and dinner in the future.
Great small plates sharing menu with unique and tasty foods. Second time here and both were outstanding. The restaurant in Arlington, VA is great too.
We were very late arriving but the staff greeted us warmly and showed us to our table. First time with Balkan cuisine so we relied on the recommendations, which were excellent. It's a bit of a walk to this place from central Washington but well worth the effort. Highly recommended.
Very interesting restaurant with an authentic Eastern-European vibe. Spanning menu, a nice selection of Bulgarian and Serbian wines, good service. Vegetarians will find much to like here, but they should be careful to read the ingredients list for each meal: sometimes you will find a rogue meat such as bacon in the most unusual places.
Ambar was a great experience. Their Balkan experience option was a great deal that allowed me to try various dishes.
I greatly enjoyed the cuisine and atmosphere at Ambar. The small plates were excellent and dessert was great.
Fantastic service. We ordered off the prix fix menu. Everything as delicious. The staff is very accommodating with gluten free diners. We had no trouble finding choices that were gluten free
My son and I came here to celebrate his birthday. We were impressed with the endless plates- we ordered a LOT while there, never felt rushed to finish off. We loved the selection, great meat assortment, unusual dishes we'd never tried elsewhere. The drinks were included and wonderful also- just can't beat the quality for the money here
I went with two friends hoping for happy hour specials. Since we weren't at the bar we couldn't get the $5 deals but our server recommended The Balkan Experience. $49 for unlimited drinks and small plates. OH. MY. GOD. Hands down one of the best dining experiences I've ever had. The food was amazing. The service was quick. And for 20 plates among the three of us and four rounds of drinks for $161 (including tip)??? You cannot beat that!
We came for the first time on recommendation from a friend. It was everything she said and more! We tried a little bit of everything and have already booked a party for 10. Friendly, attentive and professional service, great value and tasty, fresh food. Highly recommend!
Best meal in DC, presentation was stunning and flavor spectacular.
Ethnic dishes excellently prepared. While the main food categories (meat, vegetables, fish, etc) were superb, the sauces made the meal; they were outstanding. The "Balkan Experience' was amazing, but possibly a little too much food (go hungry!) Service was "on the spot", clearing dishes and bring new ones without any long pauses, yet it was unobtrusive and fun. (Milos is knowledgeable and charming!)Simply an amazing dining experience. One of the best - and most unique - dining experiences in the DC Metro area.
I had a group of girlfriends in from out of town and we wanted to go to brunch, Ambar did not disappoint. Food was great, our server Chris was on point, she kept the plates and drinks coming. Great price too. You can't beat $39 for unlimited food and drinks!
The food is great but the service is always lacking. Having come here multiple times, the waiters/waitresses are consistently curt and unfriendly.
Received a gift certificate to this restaurant, otherwise would not have discovered it. Made reservation on OpenTable. Arrived on a Saturday evening and restaurant was crowded. No problem getting seated. Menu was extensive. Waiter was helpful with tips and attentive to our needs. We elected the $49 food value for each of us which was perfect! The food was fantastic - appetizers and entrees. We were famished leaving. Highly recommend this restaurant!
We had an excellent meal. Servers were very helpful since we had two little childen with us. For was terrific
Great wait staff! Try best to accommodate. Just FYI if you are seated on the upper level outside it tends to be the noisier area to sit. I was able to get my seat changed so, I could enjoy my date.
None of us had been to Ambar before and were taken back to discover that they had a bottomless dinner option which we had never done before. The food was fantastic and while the drink service could have been a bit quicker it was still a fantastic deal.
This unique restaurant was a perfect place to celebrate my late mother's birthday and enjoy a night out. We loved doing the Balkan experience and get handed plate after plate of healthy, unique, and delicious food. The servers, especially Yulia, were attentive and unique many "unlimited" places literally wanted to bring you more food. It is certainly not cheap, but the novelty of foods not found many other places and the beautiful atmosphere makes it so worth it!
AmBar is a hidden gem on 8th St. The Bulkan Experience for $50 is the best deal I have ever seen at a tapas style restaurant. The food is amazing, drinks delicious, and staff friendly. I would eat here everyday if I could afford it!
Easily one of our favorite places. Service and food are top notch, arguably one of the best places in DC
We had a great meal here. I would like to come back to try the unlimited small plates special.
My second time doing the Balkan Experience. The food is delicious and the service is always great!
I ate dinner at Ambar and it was fabulous. The brunch menu was much more limited and I would only go back for dinner
This place had great reviews on Yelp, and I was looking for a nice date night venue. Menu was wonderful, I've never had Balkan food before but don't let that I intimidate you! Small, tapas plates, so you'll have the opportunity to try several items. Great spreads, but even better hot dish options - highly recommend the stuffed cabbage and mushroom crepe! Best deal is definitely the Balkan Experience, pretty much unlimited plates for $49 per person with rail and select drinks included! Highly recommended, I will definitely be returning.
One of the best restaurants I've dined at in DC, hands down. Great place to take friends or family visiting - everything is delicious.
My friends and I had dinner here before the Memorial Day concert on the Mall. We had the "Balkan Experience." ***Note this is $49/per person and everyone at the table must purchase it; it does not include dessert. It was AMAZING; we tried so many different dishes. Our waiter was extremely helpful, especially in assisting me with foods I could have (due to a food allergy). And we LOVED the forest gnocchi for dessert!
In a town where eating out is often of questionable value, Ambar is a wonderful exception. With a Slav/Mediterranean slant on its cooking, wines you won't find anywhere else, and friendly and unpretentious service, this is an Eastern Market gem.
This was so good. The unlimited is the best way to go. You really can't beat the price when the food, drinks, and service are top 5. Not to mention it stays coming with the unlimited option.
Great food. Cosy but a little bit noisy.
Price/quality is very fair.
great Staff ! thanks - once in WDC you should explore this restaurant.
3rd time going to Ambar and it's always a great experience. Food is great. Service is always friendly.
What a neat spot, tried food we wouldn't have otherwise by selecting the all-you-can-eat option and letting the server pick the foods. Memorable experience for sure!
My first time at this restaurant and it as outstanding. The food is very unique and their unlimited food and drink "Balkan Experience" is a great value. The service was perfect and very prompt. I would definitely recommend this place to anyone and everyone.
One of my favorite places close to the Hill and my go to when people are new to town. Fantastic options whether you want to try something new or accommodate several different dietary restrictions (Great for vegetarians, vegans, and gluten-free friends!). Staff is always friendly and helpful (especially with pronouncing items on the menu), and the drinks are delicious and not too complicated (usually just a fresh twist on a classic). Rave reviews all around for a fun, interesting, yet unpretentious night out!
Our waiter guided us through the menu and even went out of his way to make a dish dairy-free and nut free because of allergies. Absolutely fantastic!
All the dishes we sampled were good to very good and certainly different from just about anything else in the area. If we had not tried so many restaurants in the same area that were truly great, I may have rated this higher. The flavors were in the food, but very subtle - afraid I am a more "in your face" typed when it comes to flavor.
Excellent restaurant. I would highly recommend. Tried a variety of different menu choices and everything was excellent. Great service as well.
We arrived early for our reservation and had a happy hour drink in the upstairs bar while we waited. I had the house white wine, a Moldovan sauvignon blanc and our friends had the red, a Moldovan cabernet sauvignon. We thought both were excellent. Downstairs for dinner, we decided to risk the adventure of ordering ala carte from the large menu of small plates and entrees with unfamiliar names. The expert advice and assistance of our waiter, Marco, enabled us to put together a feast of interesting and tasty dishes that all four of us enjoyed very much. The service was superior, the food was great, and we enjoyed the casual and lively ambiance. Well worth the easy Metro trip from our uptown hotel to Southeast!
This is our second time here, and they maintained their excellent status with us again!! The servers, hosts, and managers are so friendly and helpful from beginning to end. The small plates are presented beautifully and taste even better! It is so hard to recommend any favorites because they are all so unique and delectable! I would recommend doing the unlimited tapas, and drinks for $49 per person. It is a great way to taste foods you can not get anywhere else. Don't be afraid to try new things. It is our new favorite place in the DC area. We will be back.
