Ambar Ratings and Reviews
A unique concept I wanted to try because of all the positive experiences friends have had visiting the Balkans, and the great reviews and photos of the restaurant. I liked the ability to share the small plates, the authentic-seeming nature of the menu, helpful friendly people, and the cozy ambience. The food was good, not great for my palate, but others more familiar with this cuisine could judge from a better perspective. All in all a pleasant experience, and I've sufficiently satisfied my curiosity.
Everything was great. We ordered the Balkan Express and had all kinds of wonderful food. It’s a good way to sample a lot of food. Favorites were the spreads, roasted pepper, and the prosciutto. Our server, Megan, was really fabulous and offered great suggestions.
This restaurant is great but ONLY if you do one of the unlimited deals. However, these deals are VERY good for the price and the quality of the food and cocktails is great. The $49/person "Balkan Experience" allows you to order basically anything on the menu food-wise but has a very limited cocktail menu -- not really a problem, though, since the included cocktails are really good, especially the mojito. You can also order the $35 special if you want food and no alcohol, but if you do want to drink, the Balkan Experience pays for itself after just two drinks. Our server was Megan (meghan?) and she was AMAZING -- so, so helpful, very attentive, and amazing in her knowledge of the menu.
I am a huge foodie. I live in Asheville NC which is a small city but has a large concentration of really delicious dining with local ingredients. While in DC I had some good meals but would always say afterward that such and such in Asheville is doing this and better. Until Ambar. The value for the food. Every single dish was outstanding, fresh, delicious. My favorites were the mussels, Brussel sprouts and the steak tartare. The drinks were amazing and strong! I can’t believe for $49 what you get and there is no skimping on anything. My husband who is def not a foodie also loved it. I can’t say enough things about this place. Service was also excellent. If u live in DC just go. One of the best food experiences I have had ever.
I took two other CEOs here. They both travel a lot, and eat a lot of business meals.
They really, really liked the food.
I was frankly amazed at how much food they ordered. I told him to get the all you can eat $49 option.
They kept asking me how I found it. I told him I had eaten at Ambar before and really liked it.
I also told them it was number five on OpenTable’s top 10 list for restaurants in DC.
Excellent Balkan cuisine with a modern twist. The forest gnocchi, while not what I expected, was a truly amazing experience for the senses. A little on the noisy side, and I was not crazy about the high top table, but we had a wonderful time celebrating my daughter's sixteenth birthday there. The staff made her - and the rest of us - feel very special indeed.
My 3rd trip to Ambar, I have been for dinner, lunch and now brunch. Food is always spot on. Picked the "Balkan Experience", $30 dollars for all the food you can eat, add $9 more that inludes mimosa and bloody mary all you can drink(I wanted red wine, so just ordered drinks ala carte). First small plates ordered came out fast, hot and delicious. Really enjoyed the dishes. We had a new server, she was very good technically, just a little nervous and quiet, but very sweet and attentive- only gave service 4 stars, because my to other visits the servers were absolutely top notch. Love this place. Must mention the host- she was super sweet, helpful, friendly and efficient.
This is our 2nd year visiting Washington from Connecticut. Ambar Restaurant is by far the highlight of our visit, including monuments and museums. The taste, variety and value of the food on the unlimited menu is hard to believe. The staff took great care of us. We look forward to visiting Ambar again next year.
Ambar is not only reliable food, but an excellent dining experience altogether. We always try something new and are never disappointed. Our service was wonderful. We love ambar and always chose it to take visitors from out of town. Tonight was no exception.
Four for dinner, so reservations were a good idea. We tried the tasting menu - one price, tried twice as many dishes as if we ordered separately. EVERY DISH WAS DIFFERENT AND DELICIOUS!!! My favorite was the sour cabbage. Something on the menu for every guest. We had great conversation and it was fun to share plates on try the variety offered. A really great value too. Our waiter was attentive, made great recommendations, and allowed us to have a vibrant dinner conversation. I will definitely return. Good for two people, great for four. I have many food allergies and the chef and waiter were able to accommodate me and alert me to possible allergens. My guests loved the experience as well.
Ambar serves a unique, high quality Serbian/Balkan menu, tappas-style which is a wonderful experience every time, particularly if you enjoy sampling food from a new world region. The wait staff are very friendly and provide terrific service. The atmosphere is festive and terrific for celebrations with friends and family. An interesting an array of wine, beer, liquor, and mixed drinks from around the world are fun to sample. All the way around a terrific experience!
Recommended by our server, the sour cabbage was probably the most memorable with the right amount of fat to tartness from the cabbage. The wine, I had the Bulgarian Gamze was fantastic. Exactly what our server had said it would be, full-bodied and it did not disappoint.
Unique & delicious food
Very accommodating service
That neon sign on the back wall that reads ‘slow food’ is NOT turned on, for good reason. Although the ingredients qualify as slow food quality, the dishes come fast.
If I find myself in DC again, I’ll definitely return to Ambar. [Went to Zaytinya the following night, which wasn’t as enjoyable as Ambar.]
Ambar is my favorite place to eat. I have been there many time for dinner but this was the first time I had been to Ambar for lunch. We did the Balkan Experience for $19 which you can share and it was delicious. The staff is excellent and give excellent recommendations. I plan to go back there many more times. It's such a fun and interesting restaurant.
I had never tried Balkan food and was eager to do so. I loved everything about the experience. The friendly staff, the cozy ambiance, and most definitely the food. It was all excellent and we could only debate about the degree of fantastic. Not a dud among the substantial number of plates we tried. Oh, the cabbage...the lamb. Go! It was wonderful
The Balkan experience (unlimited small plates and drinks) for $49 was an incredible deal. The food was flavorful and plentiful, so different, yet elevated versions of what you would see on so many foodie-adored menus. Marco, our waitstaff, was incredible...quick, informative, pleasant. I would literally plan another trip to DC JUST to go to this restaurant.
